Ambush on the stairs

Christina Websell - 13 Jan 2005 00:02 GMT I've been breaking myself back into work gently. I worked Monday & Tuesday and had today off. I was really looking forward to having a bit of a lie in. Normally the cats aren't allowed upstairs, but last night Boyfriend had got himself up on to the spare bed and requested that he might spend the night there. Hmmm. Whether to pick him up and put him downstairs or not? Not. I told him just for that night only, okay? He said yes.
While it was still dark - very early morning - there was a loud "aahraah?" at my bedroom door. It woke me up. It was Boyfriend, telling me I must get up soon or I'd be late for work <sigh> "Go away" I said, as kindly as I could. He did.
He heard me when I got up a bit later and was sitting in the bathroom. He came up the stairs to have a look. My bathroom door is slightly to the left of the stairs, my bedroom door being directly in front. He thought he heard Kitty FC coming up the stairs - or maybe intending to. He peeped round the wall to look down the stairs, then he reversed and positioned himself in front of my bedroom door to ambush her as she came up the stairs on to the landing, unawares. He couldn't see her, he was relying on the element of surprise.
Kitty came up the stairs. BF could hardly contain himself. At last he would get her back for all the times she'd boxed his ears. He rose up on his hind legs with his tail twitching. He knew she couldn't see him.
She came up to the last but one stair and sat there. So he couldn't see her either and she sat quite still. After three minutes Boyfriend couldn't bear it any longer and popped his head round the wall to see where she was. ROFL!! She exploded off the stair she was sitting on, gave him a hard smack earwise with both paws, and went downstairs with her tail in the air. He has to get up much earlier in the morning to get one over on Kitty. She hasn't survived so long - half the time feral - by being stupid!
Oh, but poor BF. He's trying to be a big strong fierce cat. Failing miserably at the moment..

Katz - 13 Jan 2005 00:16 GMT ROFL! Poor BF! He'll have his day, one of these days. She's got too many street smarts on him.

He came in at 10.30 pm with a sparrow in his mouth. He hadn't killed it, and it was squawking. I don't like that, not least because he's gone up into a tree and got it from its roost too. He paraded about for a couple of minutes with it, I didn't like it because it was still alive. I tried to get it off him, but couldn't. A few moments later, Kitty had it in her mouth. I didn't see how she took it from him. Crunch. A minute later she was eating it. Only about three wing feathers and a few body feathers left. Unfortunately, it was one of the ringed sparrows that the local University is studying at my house. Duck and run or put my hands up and report it?

Better report it. They need that *data*. I've never caught my guys w/a bird. They've never brought one inside, though they have brought in mice a few times.

When I agreed to take part in the study, I didn't have any cats. What I did have was a thriving house sparrow colony, and heard a radio appeal from a student studying for her doctorate, asking if anyone had any sparrows would we volunteer to let her study them. House sparrows - from being so plentiful that when I was a child I used to see "clouds" of them - are in such serious decline here in Britain that quite a lot of research is going on to find out what the reason might be. So I volunteered. To be quite honest, the cats have caught sparrows before, judging from the wing feathers I sometimes find in the kitchen. This is the first time AFAIK that one of the special ringed ones has been caught, though. Better gird my loins and send an e-mail to report it..

She normally eats *everything* including both legs and all tail feathers, but later I found the lower leg with the ring on put to one side. Guess she probably tried to eat it and it was too crunchy for her old teeth ;-)
> Then you know what you have to do to be able to report it. Which I think > you > ought to do. LOL! <g> No way! Would involve digging up the neighbourhood. No litter box is acceptable to Kitty. She says good cats do their stuff outside (except when it's raining hard then she wees on my logs next to the woodburner) but not if I can notice her first!

One guy to another. KFC "got him" again :( > Sam Boyfriend is such a lovely kind cat, but very niaive (sp?) just yet. He is still an overgrown kitten. He has ambitions. He thinks he can catch birds. He can, but as yet he hasn't worked out how to kill them. Kitty gets cross with him because of it, and swipes the bird out of his mouth and does the necessary. He's more successful with mice. Often they are dead when he brings them in, although I suspect they died of fright rather than he dealt the killing bite. He is what I call a bumbler. He is a lovely chap, but he bumbles around being ineffective as a "real outdoor cat who can kill birds, rats and mice etc" He can catch them, but up to now he hasn't grasped the fact that it's not enough to carry them about in the kitchen showing off with them while they are still alive. He needs to CHOMP on them, the killer bite. Kitty has been trying to show him, but has almost given up.
Maybe he's a late maturer.

Now wait a minute!! All the mice and birds I have ever brought home have been thoroughly killed before I presented them to DH.
Now if you want to talk about killing paychecks, she can probably hold her own with the best of them <G>!

:-( She smiled. Then she said "No"
>I think you need more time to write. :-) Oh, I'm not half so talented at cat stories as Enfilade and CatNipped.
The problem will be, if I'm at work I won't see the interaction between my two cats that can be so amusing, unless they do it in the evening.

She says nevertheless I need to get on with my work (which takes up much of my day) She is not an animal lover.
