CATherine - 12 Jan 2005 04:04 GMT Today I stopped in PetSmart to get some catfood. As i stood in line, I noticed a hanging rack with a new kind of laser pointer. I had tried one several years ago and my cats weren't interested. But this one was different; smaller, but brighter and it had another end-piece to make a different spot--a mouse! Intrigued, I bought it. As soon as I got home, jeff put the batteries in it and started tantalizing Robin, who had never seen one. He soon figured out where the spot was comeing from. But he enjoyed the exercise anyway. Sheba likes the mouse spot better than the little round dot. So maybe they will get some exercise and relieve the boredom. And Jeff can play with Sheba without Shasta getting jealous, since the laser light shines such a long way. Jeff tried it outside after dark and it lights up on the hill behind us a few thousand feet away! Now that is bright!

Just be careful and don't shine it into the sky, please.

I don't know what strength these lasers were.

Cheryl - 12 Jan 2005 04:40 GMT > Just be careful and don't shine it into the sky, please. I've shined mine out the window just to see if I can see a dot on the road in front of my house. I can. I just ordered a new one; one that takes AAA batteries rather than those flat tiny ones. I can't wait to get it! I use a laser pointer constantly here. Shamrock is a cat who attacks my legs (I've posted many times about how aggressive he is) and on good advice, I keep a laser pointer handy when he's at his worst, and it can lure him away from attacking me when I need to get past him. I also use it to tire out the kittens because they want to wake up and play when its my bedtime (which was over an hour ago. WHY AM I STILL UP! lol)
Laser pointers are good for making kitties go where I want them to go. ;) Like out of laundry rooms, into the kitchen at dinner time, lure toward scratching posts, etc. Great invention. Oh, and they are fun to play with.

Oh, and they >are fun to play with. My DH has been known to use one at church, in stores, etc., to lead small children back toward parents. We found out when I was in the nursery that small children like them as much as [most] cats do. :-)
Mine also doubles as a bird-training tool. Shine it at her and she vacates her current perch in a major hurry [for some reason, she's terrified of it].

Eros has a home now! *cheer!* Those were the higher powered lasers, not to mention *green* in color instead of red. They are used most often my astrologers (the back yard kind) to aim the telescopes. You can see the green on the sky better than you can the red. DH wants one for his star-gazing, but they are expensive (over $100US for the lower powered ones), and because of those few idiots that thought it would be funny, he's almost afraid to buy one now, for the fear of DHS showing up at the door (hope the dude is deathly allergic to cats LOL)

MrGuilt@gmail.com - 12 Jan 2005 14:57 GMT I think you mean "astronomer" rather than "astrologer" (who does horoscopes, etc.).
My wife got one with multiple lenses for our cats. It lacks a mouse, but has a bug, heart, and flying saucer. As usual, it is beneath Maggie's dignity to chase after it any more (or just laziness), but Eddy loves it!

Some of mine just go crazy when the red dot comes out (even though the smarter ones know that I'm making it appear) but a couple of them just, well, watch. Not sure if it's because they don't want to chase it (out of laziness or whatever), or because the others are doing such an enthusiastic job, they don't have a chance to get in there & get it.

Well, no, Ginger-Lyn is a professional astrologer, so I think she means astrologer.
