There are several rivers under flood warning in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties currently, with one known fatal mudslide at La Conchita and multiple road closures in those counties due to other mudslides. My in-laws in Santa Barbara report that their phone is out [I got this via e-mail. Apparently, they have DSL or some such, I'm not clear on the tech details].
Does anyone know who in this group is in the affected areas, and do we know if those group members are OK?
Sacramento is rather wet and windy right now, but weather.com does not report any alerts for this area, so Karen and I are fine.

We're fine here in Southern LA County. While the residential areas of LA County in the hills have had some mudslides, our only problem has been a severe case of cabin fever. Who wants to go out in the rain?? Not me!
Regards and Purrs, O J

Who wants to go out in the rain?? > Not me! My part of the San Fernando Valley is okay, too - some of the streets had a bit of deep water, but fortunately I didn't have to go out in it, and that drains away fairly fast, once the rain stops. Getting "over the hill" into Beverly Hills proved a bit of a problem for one of my bosses, today, though. All the streets through the canyons were closed or down to one lane of traffic each way. (In addition to the big mudslides, there were quite a few smaller ones - no real damage, but enough to block traffic.)
Mischief - 12 Jan 2005 05:20 GMT I'm here in Van Nuys, in the valley, and I'm still ALIVE!!
However, my roommate works at UCLA. She left at 7 am, and she called me while I was on my way to class at 8 am and said she had not left yet because the freeway was moving 5 mph!!!!
When I get home at 10:50 am, she's STILL home. The traffic is STILL really bad. But she finally leaves to brave the traffic.
She went out tonight, so I haven't seen her, but I'm sure she's okay
I got toe UCLA a few times a week for diving practice and last night the far right lane was closed due to a mudslide. Then I heard about the disaster at La Conchita
purrs for people in that area.
Then this morning during class I see SUNLIGHT!!!!
What is that?????
I hope it is not windy tomorrow. I am willing to go to diving practice in the rain, cause either way you wet, but when it's windy it REALLY GETS COLD!!!!!
Take care,
Kristi

Harri and I drove down from Sacramento yesterday. The drive was uneventful until we got south of state route 126 (Valencia area). That's when we started seeing flooding and mudslides and boulders on the road (even some on I5).
Highland and surrounding areas got 8 inches of rain from last Thursday through yesterday - much lighter than Santa Barbara's 20 inches. The rivers haven't flooded yet, and the folks living below the burn areas have not had flooding problems.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for the CA update - my son lives in Corona, and I haven't been able to get hold of him for the last couple of days. He drives from Corona to Cabazon every day - he works at the new Casino Morongo as a MIS (I believe that is his title), and I worry about him driving so far!

Dan M - 12 Jan 2005 05:34 GMT > Hi Dan, > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > Patti Fortunately the freeways that he would be travelling have been in pretty decent shape. I'v eheard that there has been a little bit of pooling on the 91 and 60, but most of the 60 has been doing just fine. And Casino Morongo is on the north side of the freeway, while the river is on the south side (about a mile from the freeway).
If he's in the MIS department, I envy him! I used to work MIS departments for my previous employers, when I was working jobs that let me come home every day.

BTW, according to him and their website, they are hiring for MIS - he is working the 3 - 11 shift and said they need help, especially the evening/night shifts. (Don't know if the casino is open 24/7 or what). He said if you would like some more info, you can email him - contact me off list at pstott at twcny dot rr dot com and I will give you his email addy.
Take care, Patti
Mary - 12 Jan 2005 18:51 GMT >> > Does anyone know who in this group is in the affected areas, and do we >know if those group members are OK? Mary here checking in from Los Angeles, California. I'm okay though we got a little flooded. The basement pump got jammed I think because of a power outage. I had three feet of water down there in half an hour. Had to go down and get the pump going again while trying not to get electrocuted. If all the house windows hadn't steam up, I might not have noticed. Thank god my house is elevated. I had to put tarps on all my outdoor caging even though they're covered on all sides but the front. The wind really whipped the water in there. Lots of palm fronds came down. My front door is wedged shut, have to go out my automatic driveway gates only. All the canyon routes are closed, streets have lots of pot holes, power still out in some areas. Thank god I live in the flats and not in a flood zone. I used to live in the hills but no more.

Good to hear from you. I thought you were somewhat nearer the carnage than most of our other LA posters so glad to see I was wrong and squirrels and all are OK.
Yoj - 11 Jan 2005 18:40 GMT I'm in Ventura County. For the past few days, I've been telling people that my garage resembled a movie - A River Runs through It. In spite of improvised sandbags, the lake that extends from the west corner of my garage to the north corner of my house overflowed into the garage.
However, today it's a different story. I woke up this morning and there was a bright light shining in my window. When I looked outside, I saw that, instead of the usual mottled gray it has been for the past few weeks, the sky was a strange color, similar to that of my blue dress. There was an extremely bright light shining in the sky, and instead of heavy, black clouds, there were white puffy things like whipped cream. No rain was falling, and there were even patches of dry on the driveway. What does this mean? Is it the end of the world? Have aliens landed?
Work on my ark was well under way, and I had already assembled a male and a female cat to load on board. Now what do I do?

Great update, Joy and glad you're alright, in spite for the river in your garage. We had that strange phenomenon in the sky here yesterday, too. Usually, this time of year, we have deep snow and days are a mere passing dusk that turns into night again. Now it's so warm, there are only small scraps of snow here and there, and it's been raining a lot. Strange weather indeed. They're warning of more storms heading this way.
