Do you do any kind of crafts? How do you manage it with cats in the
house? Scout and Silver don't like me doing anything crafty at all...
or rather, they like to altogether too much. I tried making christmas
decorations, and they jumped on the wet glitterglue and got it all
over their fur. I tried sewing cross-stitch, and they pounced the
thread and tried to eat it until I gave up and put it away... I did
get to make my christmas cards, by using all dry non-thready,
non-glittery materials that they couldn't hurt when they sat on them
(ie pens and textas and rubber stamps and stickers)... but it was
almost more trouble than it was worth. Now Christmas is over I've put
all that stuff away and I haven't tried to get it out again. I hate to
think what they 'll do if I get my scrapbooking stuff organised and
start trying to scrap.

I even tried doing it in ten minute bursts while they were fast
asleep, but they'd invariably wake up and come and investigate...

So, does anyone manage it? Or do I just give up and stop trying?

I knit and do counted-cross stitch with a cat in my lap.  I'll admit
it's a bit uncomfortable but there's no real problem until the cat
can't resist the yarn or floss any more and takes a swipe; all of my
creations end up with plenty of kitty slobber and fur worked into them!

I keep all of my craft supplies safely locked up in the "forbidden"
closet when I'm not around.

I love my cats and I love my knitting; I have no problem co-existing
with both obsessions!

I do cross stitching - a LOT.  When any cat gets near the thread(s), they
get yelled at and/or pushed away.  When they finally realize that they are
not to bother Mommy when Mommy is playing with strings, they go and play
elsewhere.  I learned to put all things away when I'm done, or else they
will be found on the floor, all cat-drool covered, not to mention tangled.

Felix has learned that interfering with Mom's craft/needlework stuff
tends to get him plopped onto the floor or hissed at, so he behaves.
Helps that he's middle-aged [about 11] and sedentary. :-)

One of the reasons I trained Mandy to wear a harness was to stop her from
hunting the wild pattern mice while I was trying to cut out something!

They can learn to resist the temptation most, but probably not all the
time. I'm trying to get back into some of the crafts I used to do, and
only last night Betsy was tempted beyond endurance by some yard I was
crocheting.

I can second the suggestion to keep all supplies secured when not in use.
I vividly remember the time Mandy discovered my skeins of tapestry yarn,
the really expensive, 100% wool, ordered in specially, tapestry yarn. The
skeins were exactly the right size for cat toys!

It just takes patience :)  I've done cross stitch, crochet and sewing
with various levels of "assistance". Cross stitch and crochet tend to
have damp spots when the temptation becomes too great for Gossamer and I
can't fend her off in time.  Jeeves likes to jump up on the table and
watch while I sew, which isn't a problem unless he actually sits on
whatever I'm trying to feed through the machine at the time :)

Ah, this thread brings back a lot of memories of when I was still able
to do crafts, mostly knitting and crocheting. Also my more active
drawing and painting days. There were always cats around, working the
yarn or the paints or walking on the charcoal drawing before it had been
fixed. Ah, happy times. ;o)

Karen, figure out when kitty naptime occurs and plan your crafts then...you
could help the snooze session along by playing with them till they're worn
out and help snooze time come a little faster ;o)
Christine (who does rubberstamping stuff in spite of 5 cats --oh, and one
thing I did do was to make a cat nesting place on the art table where I work
and they keep me company or snooze next to me.)

My oldest boy, Smokey (the giant Russian Blue) likes to watch DH sew.
(She is the hottest designer for fashions for large women!)  He can't
resist reaching out to touch the thread as it unwinds from the spool
and moves to the thread tensioning assembly.  She has to keep an eye
out for him as he will sit motionless on the back of the machine till
he can't help but reach out to the thread.

Mine seem to be to cool to chase sewing stuff these days, but you
brought back a fun memory of my Boris (RB) from back when I used to be a
clothing pattern maker. The patterns they use in factories aren't made
of the flimsy tissue paper used for home sewing patterns; instead
they're usually made of a lightweight cardboard that stands up to being
used over and over. The cardboard came on heavy rolls with a hollow core
about 12-15cm (5-6") in diameter.

Anyway, when I was making patterns I'd lift the roll of card up on end
of the table and trundle the roll down to the other end, leaving couple
of metres of card on the table; once I'd used that up I'd slide the roll
back to the first end and trundle out out a couple more metres. Boris
discovered he could crawl into the hollow core of the roll, and that it
was REALLY FUN to stay in there while I trundled the roll of card along
the table, rolling him over and over inside it. Yes, really. He loved
it. Weird cat, but a very sweet one.

Brenna loves it when I do nalbinding (fiddly craft with long bits of
yarn that ends up looking like crochet or knitting) or cross-stitch.
That means that I'm "planted" for a while, and there will be a lap to
snuggle into.  I have to reinforce this each time, but I've taught her
that she can snuggle on my lap like a good kitty, or she can get down
and play.  Playing on my lap with my yarn/threads gets her dumped on the
floor.  As long as I'm consistent with it, she remembers fairly quickly.
But she has to test the limits each time.  When I sew, I cut things
out on the kitchen table, and the only real rules are: no playing with
the pins (which are kept "out of kitty reach" (yeah, right)), no getting
on the table when meowmy is looking (let's be realistic), and no playing
near the sewing machine while it's being used.  If I'm on a deadline,
sometimes I have my mom come over to help me by playing with/distracting
the cat and/or pinning one part while I sew another.
