Since I've moved out of state, I'm obviously not taking Natasha to her
vet any longer. Because of finances, I don't want to have to take her
to a new vet unless absolutely necessary.
Problem - old vet had her on Feline K/D, which to my knowledge you can
only get through a vet's office, and I can't see taking her to a new
vet and paying the expense from an exam just to get a bag of K/D (she
eats dry).
Is it true that you can only get K/D through a vet? Or is there
perhaps a place to order it online? Or can someone recommend an
alternative?
I did stock up with a big bag before we moved, but that'll run out
eventually...
Thanks for any suggestions!

I switched vets once and simply told the new vet's office what my cat was
on and they agreed to supply me with it. Don't know if that was against
"the rules" but I think they figured that if my cat was on a special diet
I am clearly a responsible pet owner and would eventually bring my cat to
them for rechecks or if anything came up that needed a vet's attention.
They probably figured they were gaining a new client by supplying my needs
without pushing for unnecessary exams first. I suggest you call a new vet
and explain the situation OR empty the bag and take it into a vet's office
and explain you just moved and your cat is on this and you need more. I
bet that would be proof enough.
If not, I'm sure having the old records transferred to them would be
plenty. They can't really argue with lab results that would be in your
previous records.
If none of these reasonable things worked I would try some other vet.
Good luck! Michelle

I think most vets you could just go to and get it without an exam if you
explain you just moved there and need a new source.

When our Hobo was diagnosed as diabetic, he was put on D/M
(diabetic management) canned or dry. Our vet did not stock it but
told us of one who did carry it. It can only be purchased at the
vet's but a prescription is not necessary. We simply went there,
asked for it, bought it, without any checkup or office visit needed.
I'm sure I've seen K/D on their shelves and it's sold the same way.
Perhaps the vets in your new location have a similar setup. Good
luck, and scritches for Natasha.

Our local PetSmart has a vet next door, with a small retail counter. They
sold us the special food (can't remember which) that Cali was on, no
questions asked. The vet opertated similar to the Optometrists in the Lens
Crafters stores, parasitic/symbitotic.

Jeanne,
Persia is on Hill's x/d. Initially I had the vet order it (they don't stock
it) but the price shocked me. I can order it for less online, no
"prescription" required. I checked the site where I order and they have the
feline k/d as well.

you shouldn't have to make an appointment to simply go in and buy some
cat food. The vets office i worked at sold stuff to folks that just
walked in and wanted to buy.

You should probably take her records from the old vet to a new one, just to
have her set up somewhere, in case of emergency. The vet will probably
allow you to purchase the k/d without an exam.
