Last year, Speckles was diagnosed with kidney problems, with only a
quarter of kidney function left.  She was given K/D which she refused
with all stubborness to touch.  A cat will eat anything rather than
starve?  Not Speckles!!  Not K/D, not *any* brand of senior-citizen
diet.  I gave in and let her have her beloved Fancy Feast, feeling as
though I were murdering her.

She did not require Sub-Q's yet but for the past week she has been
vomiting on a daily basis.  We seemed to be spending half our time
cleaning up barf.  I expected we'd lose her this year and this seemed
to be the start of the downhill slide.  So off to the vet yesterday
for checkup and tests, with a great deal of trepidation.
Hallelujah!!!  Tests showed her kidney function in the *normal*
range!!  I did a happy-dance right there in the vet's room!

How come the turnaround on a Fancy Feast diet?  Oh, well, mine not to
wonder why!!

Well, yea Speckles! Did the vet have any explanation? I'm so happy for
you both. :o)

Awesome news about the kidneys!  Did you figure out why she was throwing up,
though?

Not really.  I was so excited about her CRF reprieve, I barely
listened to the rest of it!!   The vet suggested several possibilities
but found nothing definitive, after ruling out kidney, liver,
heartworm, etc.  He gave us an anti-inflammatory and an anti-nausea
medication, and she's been just fine!!!!  (Except that the fiesty old
lady needs a strait-jacket to get the stuff down her!!)

Thank you for asking.

Great news!  Congratulations!  But why is she vomiting, did they know?

Thank you.  Nothing really wrong was found.  Apparently an irritated
stomach.  She's on anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea medication now
and hasn't had a vomiting episode since!!

Thank you.  The reprieve was welcome news, and she's doing fine now
with the medications prescribed.

Thanks.   Well, I don't buy it either - FF is hardly a cure-all!!
Actually, the point I try to make is that although it doesn't cure
anything, it at least did no *harm*.  Yet.

Every time I hear about a cat beating RF, I don't know whether to do a
happy dance or cry.  I wish I still had my Mimi.

Oh, so do I, Theresa, so do I, bless your heart.  We've lost two
kitties to CRF so I know it's an excruciatingly painful loss to you.
Purrs and hugs.

Could Speckles be misdiagnosed with kidney problems? Was a blood test
done last year to check her kidney functions?

My 10 year old cat Rusty was diagnosed with renal insufficiency 3 years ago.
RS is the stage before kidney failure.
He was put on a prescription G/D senior cat diet. While on that diet, he got
crystals in his urine and had to switch to a diet for urinary crystals.
Recent blood tests showed his kidney is fine. So the initial diagnosis was
wrong. Good thing Rusty is not picky with prescription cat food.
This week he is being switched yet again to I/D for his diarrhea.

Since I thought that RF or CRF was irreversible, I did wonder if
it could have been a misdiagnosis, although I had seen and read the
printout of the blood test done last year.  So I was *really*
surprised to learn that, nearly a year later, she's perfectly normal.
The vet who treated Speckles last year is no longer with the clinic we
use and a different vet did this testing.  I guess it's a remote
possibility that two people could come up with two different results?

Poor Rusty,  you're both going through an awful lot, aren't you?
You have our purrs and best wishes.
