Do your cats perform bathroom escort duties too?

Karen AKA KajiKit - 06 Jan 2005 16:34 GMT Scout and Silver take it in turns to escort us to the bathroom. If you close the door to keep them out they lie on the other side and poke their paws through underneath... they REALLY want to be in there, so they can walk in circles around you, rub against your legs, demand pets, and in Silver's case, meow loudly until you pick her up and perch her on your shoulder!
Actually Silver hadn't done that to me yet... she usually reserves that action for John when he comes home from work. But a few minutes ago she decided that I needed a feline escort, and she went MEOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! until I reached down and scooped her up and let her sprawl on my shoulder, where she purred contentedly. And I had to stay put until she was ready to get up, when she watched the water swirl around the bowl and then investigated the mirror kitty from the comfort of my shoulder.
Yep, it's official... I'm kittypecked :)

> Yep, it's official... I'm kittypecked :) Yep, Persia *has* to come in there when I'm there. And when sitting on the "throne" she often reaches up and gives me a gentle bite on my knee! If I'm in the bathtub she gets on the edge of the tub, meowing at me for getting myself all wet. If I take a shower, she pokes her head around the curtain and yells at me :)

Simba LOVES to watch the water swirl. He gets the cutest most perturbed look as the water disappears and fills back up. You can just see the little gears turning in his head as he tries to figure out what makes the water swirl.
Pepper has a compulsive need to mark the toilet by rubbing his face glands on it - major YUCK. He also HAS to be in the bathroom when I am. He just knows that if I go in and shut the door without him, the mean toilet monster might suck me down with all the water. He also figures toilet time is the perfect time to get attention and pettins. ~jemifer (& Pepper & Simba)

I don't know when she stopped, but she really doesn't care anymore. Baths, on the other hand, are rare enough that she has to investigate. I'm convinced she's going to jump right in some day, and both of us will be very upset!

Chablis loves it when I shower or take a bath. When I shower she stands on the edge of the tub, in between the shower curtains. When I take a bath, she sits on the side of the tub & watches me, occasionally wanting to sniff at a hand or foot & take a swipe at them as they dip under the water.

JBHajos - 06 Jan 2005 17:47 GMT >Scout and Silver take it in turns to escort us to the bathroom. Speckles sleeps with me. She's learned that the first thing I do on awakening is head for the bathroom. She gets down and *leads* the way, down the short hall and to the right!
Folks call her my "shadow" -- wherever I am, she has to be. So we make several trips to the bathroom, as well as everywhere else, all during the day.

Katz - 06 Jan 2005 18:08 GMT When Daisy, of the superkitty hearing, hears me sit on the toilet, she comes running from all corners of the house. Then, like Silver, she must be petted or picked up so she can climb up & hang on my (always the RIGHT) shoulder. But she's pretty big, so I put her back on the floor before I stand up.

The bathroom has always been a must for my cats. Holly - 06 Jan 2005 18:46 GMT I am so glad that I am not the only one with a bathroom escort. When I go my kitten just watches contently. But when my husband goes she will baalance herself on the back of the seat (my husband is still sitting when she does this) and will proceed to try and cover the stink.

My cats sometimes escort me for bathroom duties. But what they really do is based on the fact that I am such a creature of habit, as are they! I always take a visit to the throne just before I feed them. They, being smart, have figured this out, and pretty much the entire herd follows me up an accompanies me on my throne by using theirs, awaiting the dinner that will fill them up once again ;-)

Yup. Oscar always wants to be nearby, even if she's not *right there*. It's disconcerting, but if that's the worst habit she has *shrug*

Mischief - 07 Jan 2005 03:05 GMT Mischief does this especially. I'll be on the throne and she'll come in and start rubbing, begging to be scritched.
Imp will occasionally come and investigate, but he's more interested in escorting my roomie when she's in her bathroom.
Also, since all doors are NOT to be closed, and normally the bathroom door will be closed, Imp will sit and scratch at the door, until it opens or he shoves it open.
Once I was taking a relaxing bath when suddenly I noticed the lighting in the bathroom had changed. A shadow from the door obscured the light as it slowly was pushed open. For a split second I was scared, but then I see Imp sitting on the other side, with his innocent look. Kristi

O J - 06 Jan 2005 22:17 GMT Re: Do your cats perform bathroom escort duties too?
They escort both of us. Either Lady Jane Grey, Sumo, or Smokey is sure to follow me in. There's a small chest of drawers opposite the throne and we keep a few cat toys in there. Mostly what they want though is attention, but sometimes they want a drink from the faucet.
Lynda gets Sumo, Smokey, or Squidget and maybe sometimes Lady Jane. One time Smokey just wouldn't leave her alone when she wanted some solitude. Lynda heard a skritching noise on the door and yelled that she'd like five minutes of privacy please. The skritching stopped for a moment and then started in again. Stop and start! Stop and start! Lynda was getting more and more heated till she was swearing vengeance on that damned pussycat as soon as she was done. She finished washing up and opened the door to find her DH kneeling on the floor skritching the door at kitty level.
If I had it all to do over again, I wouldn't have been kneeling, I'd have been in a sprinter's crouch. ;-)
Regards and Purrs, O J

My kitty, Mindy (http://steve-and-pattie.com/mindy/index.html#top), is always there when I am, and I take the opportunity to pick her up and get some kitty-hugs, generally with purrs. Mayby I should list this among he interests and hobbies on her web page, but I'm not sure how to explain it.

Shroder always escorted me. And after we moved, Libby began doing it also. It was interesting watching the 2 of them wander in and check me out. Now the Shroder is gone, Libby does all by herself. She will jump up and run into the bathroom ahead of whoever is going in there, and then sit in front of the toilet waiting.

I don't know what the attraction is, but mine all are really *right there* even if they have been asleep when I go in. If guests come, and close the door, they are really puzzled and meatloaf outside. I suppose offering support.

Before Stinky first came along, a lot of things were "old hat" to Mimi-- such as accompanying me to the bathroom, watching the toilet flush, trying to discover what was making the noise when I gargled, drinking from the tap, etc. When Stinky came as a hoolikitten, and naturally had to investigate everything, Mimi's interest in all these things suddenly revived. I guess she was afraid she was missing something. So instead of just the new hoolikitten "supervising" in the bathroom, I suddenly had two black-and-white bathroom bosses. ;)

luvfunstuff - 08 Jan 2005 02:43 GMT Two black & white's accompanying you? Sounds like a police escort! LOL!!
My Phil kitty likes to play the following same game over and over. He spies you on the toilet, or heading into the bathroom, then runs ahead and hides behind the nearly floor-length window blinds and waits patiently till I tickle his feet which are conspicuosly showing from under the bottom of the blinds. Then he takes his cue and leaps out at me. I always feign surprise and throw my hands up and let out a little shriek, then he comes over and demands a snuggle and a rubdown. He's a very smart kitty - even gives kisses right on the mouth if you ask him to (and he knows you are hiding a piece of chicken in your hands!) (Chicken is like gold in his book) Learned this trick when he was 4 months old! :) Michelle

You mean there are cats who DON'T visit you in the bathroom? Pine Cone loves to climb in the shower with Amanda and get her to spike his fur. I've climbed out of the shower and found four cats sitting in the bathroom door staring at the crazy wet hoomin. They also love to come in and get pettins while meowmie is occupied. Tanada used to love to sit in Rob's underwear when he was parked on the john. She's over it now, but I suspect Rob misses it at times.

Yes, at least one of them usually accompanies me to the water closet, and in the mornings before I feed them, all three usually come along. If they don't come with me at first, they come keep me company while I'm on the throne when they realize that's where I am. Nina loves to watch the toilet flush, being convinced I have the world's snazziest litterbox. =o) I keep a close watch on her though, as I'm sometimes worried that she'll dive in.
Pan loves to come in to the bathroom when I'm taking a shower. I think the warm steamy air is his Kitty Sauna, and feels good to his old joints. That, and I'm convinced that cat thinks he's my husband. Before his broken leg, he liked to sit on the bathroom window sill, and he and I would have conversations back and forth as I dried off and got dressed. =o) Hopefully, he'll resume that practice when he's free of his bandages. Cesca likes to sit on the toilet tank, and poke her paw at the Plumber's friend. All the cats know I'm going to be sitting still for a few minutes and it's a good opportunity to get some ear scritches doled out.

If you >close the door to keep them out they lie on the other side and poke [quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > >Yep, it's official... I'm kittypecked :) Sounds awfully familiar - both mine figure anytime they find a hoomin sitting they should be in for a good scritch, and that include hoomins in the bath. Sammy sometimes takes the opportunity to climb up on said hoomin's shoulder so that she can open up the above the toilet cupboard and take a nap on the towels. When Sammy is prevented from following me into the bathroom (I usually shut the door when I take a shower) I often find several bottle caps which she has shoved under the door when I step out of the shower.

Signature Adrian (Owned by Snoopy & Bagheera) A house is not a home, without a cat.
Singh - 09 Jan 2005 22:06 GMT Brandy is the one most likely to perform can duty, with Stosh running a close second. Stosh will just hang around while we use our funny-looking litterbox, but Brandy has a peculiar attraction for the shower. She frequently pokes her head through the curtains, or will sit on the edge of the tub to engage us in a rousing game of butt-boxing. This involves her smacking our fannies through the curtains, and we have to poke our fingers around so she can try to shadowbox them, or wrassle them.
The girls all have a fixation on the tub and sink. Brandy especially likes to play with water, while Roxie likes to take a cool drink. recently we found that Odessa likes playing in the tub too, but she won't let us watch her; it's as if it would be too dangerous to her princess dignity!
Blessed be, Baha
