A few months ago our branch of Cats Protection took in two middle aged
neutered boys, because their owner was moving abroad and couldn't take them
with him. He'd moved in, temporarily, with his sister, who is allergic to
cats, and he'd put his house up for sale to fund the move.

Well, the house sale fell through, but he perservered, and tried another
estate agent. He kept in touch, asking if the cats had been rehomed yet.
Just before Christmas, the house sale fell through again, and he rang to ask
if the cats were still with us. Three days ago he rang us again to explain
that he'd been planning on moving to Thailand, where he'd been offered a
job. Well, the job isn't there any longer, thanks to the earthquake and
subsequent tsunami,  and he's decided that since the fates are so obviously
against him leaving England, he should listen to them. He's moved back into
his house, and collected the cats, who are VERY happy to be home again.

Nice to hear some good news! I bet he was glad he hadn't already moved out
to Thailand. Our thoughts are with all those who are affected, wherever they
may be. Hopefully with aid crossing all barriers, perhaps people will
realise that we're all on this planet together and it's about time we
stopped fighting each other. Purrs of good wishes to the felines from
memphis and Phoenix

Remarkable, how fate spins around like that. I'm glad all three of them have
been "rehomed" together1

Blessed be,

OK, maybe it's just because I'm in a bad mood today (tired, walked on by the
boss, stressed, and coming down with some kind of grunge), and everything is
rubbing me the wrong way.  But I just don't understand how someone could
give away his furbabies - no matter what the reason may be.  To me that
would be like saying, I have to find a new home for my children because I'm
moving overseas.  Couldn't do it - would find another job, would even go on
welfare and live under a bridge before doing that.  I'm kind of bummed that
they had to go back to live with someone who gave them away!  :<

I have the same gut response, but then I realize that I *did* give up Eros.
So now I don't really feel qualified to judge other people.  It's a slippery
slope, I guess.  Like, Eros' previous owner gave him up because she had to
move to a new apartment that only allowed one cat.  I would have held out for
an apartment that would allow all my pets to stay.  But then I think, well,
she has a kid, and maybe she just couldn't afford to keep two cats and a child
healthy, and she had to make a choice.  I mean, maybe money really was that
tight, and maybe the best thing for Eros' health was to get him an owner who
could afford to take care of him.  I don't know.

Maybe the guy accepted a job out of the country because he couldn't find one
here.  I mean, is living under a bridge without vet care really much good for
the cat, either?

Well, from what I read, you had to because of Oscar and your husband's
illness.  But yeah, you're right.  I said it was probably because I'm so out
of sorts that I'm being bit*hy!

I've just heard so many stories about people who "had" to give their cats
away for a job, or an apartment, or a transitory girl/boyfriend, etc.

For me, it would have to be a choice between a "bare" loved one or a furred
loved one for me to choose to give up my furred loved one (and DH doesn't
ever push that point 'cause he's afraid if he catches me on a bad day the
choice would be *him*!!)  ;>

I have given up apartments in order to keep my babies.  I live with
*extreme* alergies (the worst to cats) and asthma and have given up my
alergist when he told me to give up my furbabies.  I passed up a promotion,
raise, and a paid move to another (nicer) city in order to keep my babies.

I'm either enough of an egoist to think they would prefer that, or selfish
enough that I would consider that (although I think, even living under a
bridge I would panhandle for vet money)!

We took Vino with us when we moved to Thailand from Canada.  No
biggie.  Of course, getting a cat back into Britain from Thailand is
impossible.  We are moving to Australia in 1-2 years and will have to
go through an *extremely* complicated procedure to get Vino in.  This
will cost a lot of money and he will have to be quarantined for a
month.  But we will do whatever it takes.  Who knows how long this guy
was planning to move to Thailand for and how old his cats are?  It
might not have been an issue anyways.

Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's

Believe me, people do it all the time. There are lots of reasons, moving to
somewhere where they can't keep pets, living with someone who has an
allergy, change of economic  circumstances which  mean that they can't
afford vet bills. I gave my own cat to my mother about seventeen years ago
when I was suddenly made redundant and homeless at the same time. I got a
new job in a different city, but the people I was sharing the new house with
already had a cat, and weren't keen on the idea of another one moving in.
Also, the new house was on a very busy street, and Fuzzy had always been
used to playing outside in a safe area. He went to live with my mother in
Cornwall, where he had huge fields to play in and very little traffic to
worry about.

In the case of these two cats, we know that they'll be well looked after,
we've never had as many phone calls from an 'ex' owner asking about the cats
as we did from this guy.
