Bubbel Shoulder

My shoulder is sore.

I went tot he physio to try to have it fixed. He said it was a relatively
common problem that people who start computing discover. It occurs in the
arm that they use the mouse with.

I have been using computers for <mumble> years, so its unlikely to be normal
computer use.

"Have you been using hte computer more than usual? Does it involve alot of
mouse movement?"

Well, there's only one thing that has attracted extra computer use: Bubbels.
And yes, its mouse movement.

So thanks to Bev and her insidious Bubbel game, I now have "Bubbel Shoulder"

But am I going to give it up?

Oh, how I wish!!!

I've been noticing the same thing. More shoulder and neck pain than
usual. Stupid game. hehe

Do you know, I have something called bubbel wrist.   It is serious but I
intend to cope bravely with the pain!!!

For years, I've gotten a cramp in my neck/trap area whenever I'm on the
computer a lot.  I honestly don't know what I'm doing, but it's worse when I
play games.  Does it stop me?  *sigh*

I use a trackball, not a mouse, because mice definitely hurt my wrist.  I am
the master of hotkeys rather than mouse usage.  But unfortunately, not
everything can be done that way.

Thank goodness I never got into games in a big way.  But I, too, am a hotkey
master.  I tried a trackball but didn't notice any appreciable lessoning of
movement; I still have carpal tunnel syndrome.  I just try not to use the
mouse unless absolutely necessary.

As far as I know, I've never had CTS (knock on wood).  My wrists are
fine as long as I have support so that I don't have to angle them up to
type or mouse.  It's kind of amazing, considering that during and since
college, I've spent more hours in front of the computer than doing
anything else, by a long shot.  I use a trackball that I manipulate with
my index finger; IMO the thumb-based ones are awful.  Also, I've
recently started using a wrist pad with it, so that my hand doesn't have
to elevate as much.

I had a CS professor who blamed her CTS on the advent of the mouse, which may
have influenced my tendency to prefer console apps and gui apps with lots of
hotkeys.  Even in games, I customize keystrokes as much as possible so that my
most commonly used actions are on the keyboard.

I had wrist problems all of this past year, and everyone but me was sure it was
CTS.  Turns out that your carpal tunnels are actually a specific part of the
wrist.  Fortunately, after spending gobs of money on physical therapy (that
didn't help at all), x-rays and MRIs, a simple steroid shot seems to have
worked, though it hurt incredibly for about a day, and was sore for a while
after that.

Just a warning (that hopefully won't apply to you, Monique) - but I was
having steroid shots in my elbow - OW, like when you hit your "funny bone"
but the pain lasts for a week.  The problem was that the shot was just
masking the pain and I was injuring my elbow even more because I couldn't
feel the pain which makes you stop doing whatever it is that is causing the
pain.  After about 5 or 6 weeks the pain would come back even worse so I had
to go get another shot which started the cycle all over again.  I finally
just gritted by teeth, and did the physical therapy my GP recommended at
home (instead of paying thousands of dollars on PT - I used a can of
peas!!).

Well, I continued not to do anything with my wrist for a few weeks and had a
followup dr's visit after a month.  He cleared me to do anything I'd like, and
told me that soreness would probably just be a result of unused muscles
getting back to work.

It's been almost exactly two months now.  Of course, if the pain returns, I'll
be right back at the doctor's.  He said that if steroid shots don't help, he'd
have to do some surgery to find the problem, because the MRI didn't show
anything.  So I'm hoping, for many reasons, that it's really all better.

I did 6 or 8 sessions of physical therapy before trying the shot route.
The physical therapy didn't help at all, and I couldn't do the exercises
at home because my wrist was so tender that they hurt.  The physical
therapist was just trying to get the inflammation down enough to
identify the culprit, but nothing she tried would work.  She finally
said that there wasn't any point in doing the sessions if I was
experiencing literally no progress.  The steroid shot finally did kill
it.  My ortho doctor suggested it could have been a tiny bit of scar
tissue, and apparently the steroid shot would have helped it heal as
well as helping the pain.

In one of the ancient computers I had, it had a huge trackball. I liked it
so much more than the mouse for almost everything besides having to draw. No
wires to get tangled, no desk to run out of, always exactly where you put it
last, and not subject to the attentions of a curious kitten!

Yes, I'm a fan of trackballs - I had almost forgotten them though.

Mine is a wireless logitech.  There aren't a lot of wireless trackballs
floating around, but my desk is cluttered enough without wires all over.  I
like the ones that allow you to spin the ball with your forefinger; the thumb
ones are just annoying.

I'm so glad I never got to play the bubbel game, I have enough trouble
with my shoulders, listening to you all talking about this game, I never
dared to ask how to get it as I was afraid I might get hooked, now I guess
I'm the lucky one  LOL   Jean.P.

My last doubled score 62,090 so I'm getting better, lol.
