Oh how I hate reading these things, but will I stop doing so - NO!  I really
need to cancel my CNN "alert" for the keyword "cat".  Although it sometimes
brings up nice little stories that I enjoy, it too often brings up stuff
like this (at least thie sickos were fired and charged with federal animal
cruelty):

Yet another reason for me to avoid Wal-Mart

There are plenty of reasons to avoid Wal-Mart, but this isn't one of them.
It's not like they had a directive from the CEO to do this.  These were
individual dumbasses, and Wal-Mart has suspended them without pay while
investigating the situation.

I did a bit of searching, and found an online "store feedback form" for
Wal-Mart... I suggest as many people as possible fill one out & click
submit, to they will learn that "we are not amused" by this happening

http://www.walmartstores.com/wmstore/wmstores/Container.jsp?template=OnlineForm.jsp

I live in IN, and am currently ashamed of us for this.... I am a licensed
gun owner, and it is very tempting to hop in the car & take a drive down to
Evansville to fine these *THREE* 'managers' responsible and see how they
like being shot at....

Wal-Mart Fires 3 Workers After Cat Killed
Police: Two Followed Manager's Orders To Shoot Animal
POSTED: 6:52 am EST December 30, 2004
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Two Wal-Mart employees have been charged with felony
animal cruelty after police said they followed a manager's orders to shoot
and kill a stray cat.

The men, both assistant managers at the store, were arrested and released
after a court appearance Wednesday. Christopher Anderson, 29, and Jeffrey
Hardin, 21, told police the store's manager ordered them to get rid of the
animal that was living in a storage trailer behind their store.
Anderson and Hardin repeatedly shot the cat with a pellet gun from the store
until it died the following day, a Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department
report said.
"We were sickened by this cruelty," Kevin D. Miller, regional vice president
for the Arkansas-based retailer, said in a news release Thursday.
"After an internal investigation, we terminated the three associates we know
to be involved," the release said. The company did not name the employees
who were fired.
The company also plans to donate $10,000 to split between the Vanderburgh
County and Warrick County Humane Societies in Indiana, the release said.
A truck driver who reported the incident said he saw store employees placing
what he believed to be a dead animal in shrink wrap a day after he heard
workers joking about shooting the cat.
Store manager Darrel Weitzel told police he had told some of his employees
to get a gun and get rid of the cat after attempts to coax it from the
trailer failed, according to a police report.
Anderson and Hardin were scheduled for a hearing next Tuesday.

Interesting.  I called the store this morning ((812)473-1815) and
someone claiming to be an assistant manager said these guys would be in
later today.

And we all know 'assistant managers' of large stores are kept totally in the
loop ;)

Exactly what I was thinking - they were probably looking at the printed
schedule, and even if the person answering the phone *were* aware that the
culprits had been fired, was probably under orders to not speak to anyone
about it - to let the 'spokesperson' of the store/company handle that.

$10,000 is a drop in the bucket for Walmart :(   If they wanted to make a
statement, they should have done more than that. Or, as amends 10 thousand a
YEAR would be more useful as a statement that they do not endorse this sort
of thing. I avoid the store as much as possible simply because I think they
are a blight for the local retailer, but what irritates me most is the front
they put up of such total benevolence while systematically destroying small
business.

I found it significant that the two men who did what they were told were
fired and charged, while apparently the manager who told them to do it gets
off scott free.

I still think all 3 should be part of a TNR program.

In the case of certain hoomins, one hopes that their part of the gene
pool has been chlorinated.

Sadly, you know it hasn't been.  In fact, they've probably already managed
to reproduce.

Walmart wants us to "think" they are awesome supporters of the community, but
they are really not. We buy TONS of stuff there for the Shelter. At Christmas,
they made a big deal out of a $3,000 "donation" they were making, and asked us
to show up for a photo opp. In reality, there were many others there, Red
Cross, Women's Shelter, etc. etc. Wal Mart donated a TOTAL of $3,000. Each
charity actually got $200. For the amount of dough that Wal Mart sucks out of
the community (in exchange for some part-time minimum wage jobs)...a $200
donation from them was shameful. Then they wanted all this publicity from the
newspaper.
Sorry. Wal Mart rant over.

Rant away!  That's totally disgusting.  They're trying to milk thousands of
dollars of publicity out of a few measly buck thrown at the feet of
worthwhile charaties.  This is from a press release way back in 2002 (so you
know it's a lot more now since they have expanded tremendously in the past 2
years)...

"The company said it made net profits of $2.04bn (?1.3bn), compared with
$1.62bn a year earlier."

That's *NET* profits of over 2 *BILLION* dollars!!  And they give a paltry
$10,000 to the humane society after three of their employees were involved
in animal abuse!!!!

BAH!  I will never shop there again - it will be worth it to spend a few
bucks more to shop at a company that actually gives a sh*t about their
community!

Hugs,

CatNipped

>Hugs,

Good for you. I wish I could say I'd never shop there again, but it's about all
we have since they put KMart and four grocery stores out of business here. What
really made me mad is we bought all our cleaning supplies and office supplies
there all year. And we used TONS of cleaning supplies. And we paid full price
for all of it. Bah is right.

Exactly!  They could have donated much, much, MUCH more, and set up
something to educate people about animal abuse.  Done some PSA's,
*something*!!

I never shop there either.  Besides the fact that they are evil, their
stores, at least around here, are dirty and disheveled.  They used to donate
small sums of money and some supplies to our shelter, but they stopped when
they got a new manager.  They made us take our collection box out, too.
There are many local small businesses that give us donations, which are
probably a bigger percentage of their profits than Wal-Mart's $10K.  I make
sure I partronize them when I can.
