Oscar is unimpressed by the fishing pole type toys (stick to string to
feathers, etc).  She'll chase thrown items, but loses interest the moment they
land.  I've tried for years to interest her in various toys and games, to no
avail.  I figured she just wasn't into jumping, flipping, you know, exercise.
Unless she gets the zoomies, of course.

But then ... then I bought a cat dancer.  I've seen this toy mentioned all
over the place, but whenever I saw it at the store, I rejected it.  It's a
little pouch.  What could possibly be in that thing?  I couldn't tell.  It
must be some sort of gag, I thought.

One day, though, I thought, hey, four bucks.  It's worth it just to satisfy my
curiosity.

Opened the flat little baggie and pulled out ... metal wire and a few bits of
cardboard?  You've got to sh^H^Hkidding me.  I just paid good money for *this*
thing?  You can barely even see the "toy" at the end!

Well, fine.  I bought it; might as well try it.

This is where it gets weird.  Oscar *loves* this thing.  She's nuts over it.
I can drag the end on the floor as I walk around, and she stalks it, pouncing
when it goes around a corner.  I can swing it above her and she'll jump, even
doing full flips and twisting in mid-air like a kitten.  Even if she seems to
be ignoring it, she'll come running if it starts to leave the room!  This is
the first toy we've had that tires me out before she's done.

Maybe all those bright colors, feathers and fur are just to amuse the silly
humans.  I mean, cats do love to chase itty bitty bugs; this thing looks an
awful lot like an oversized, injured moth.

Whatever the reason, I'm glad to finally, after four years, have a toy Oscar
actually enjoys!

I can safely say that this is Tutu's favorite toy.  She will also bring it
to me when she wants to entice me to play.  I really need to get a new
one as this is now well worn.   MLB

I got one of those when Ping first appeared at our house, and was still
confined to the front porch then.  He wasn't interested in it - only wanted
companionship & *IN*.  Now that he's been in for 2 months (+/- a few days),
he absolutely loves it, as do Moe, Ernie, Weeble & Mimi.  I divided up the
cardboard bits betweent the two ends, and let them have at it by themselves.
One will be playing with end A, making end B jiggle around, so another cat
will pounce on it.... making end A move more erratic & so cat with end A
goes even more bonkers with it..... and it keeps going on & on like that.
They've drug it from one end of the house to another, and back again.

What a wonderful image!  I wish I could have a gaggle (or whatever the term
is) of cats, too.  It seems silly only having one pet in a three-story house,
but Oscar insists on it.

You will no doubt see the word at sometime on this group, the correct
term for a group of domestic cats is, a clowder. Maybe one day you may
find a cat that Oscar likes, and doesn't trigger your DH's allergies.

Ah, thanks.  I'd seen the word before, but I'd forgotten it.

Well, I'll definitely have to get one of those. My girls will play
w/the fishing rod for a very brief time, then that's it. Same with
catnip toys. I've actually never had a cat that seemed to like toys.
They all seem to have the attention span of a flea. I'll have to try
the cat dancer. Thanks for the testimony.

Like I said, it was four bucks, so I figured it's worth a shot =)

If you have tons of old toys that your cats ignore, you might consider
donating them to your local shelter, btw ... it never occurred to me until
recently to do this.  We uncluttered our house a good deal this way.

My little man Sumo, when he was in the kitty equivalent of his teens
would drag his Cat Dancer around the house and drop it at DH's feet
when he wanted to play.  He would prance as he carried it from room to
room as if showing off a freshly made kill.

I've been keeping the toy out of Oscar's reach when I'm not around to
supervise; I'm worried about her poking her eye out with the thing!  I guess
that's silly.  I'm careful when we play together not to pull it too hard, for
fear of hurting her paws.  I'm just not used to a cat toy that involves a
sturdy piece of metal ....

Am I being paranoid?

Chalk it up to "you never know what will appeal to a cat." =o) The Late,
Great  Isadora also thought the cat dancer was the most fascinating and
amusing toy she'd ever seen It was actually how she got her name as a baby,
as she would pursue the dancer with these tremendous balletic leaps. Pan
likes it too, and even with a clumsy bandaged leg, he still bats at it now
and then.  I bought one for a friend of mine with a sticky paw at the other
end so it could be wall mounted.  Her Cat Edgar treats playing with the cat
dancer as his morning exercise routine.  Her other four cats aren't that
interested.   Nina and Francesca both find they like fishing pole toys more.
