I've decided that I need to take up meditation again for the sake of my
blood pressure and my sanity.  (Work stuff, mostly office vibes, is
stressing me out and I don't do this kind of stress well.)  However, I
haven't done this since before I was claimed by Brenna, so I'm trying to
re-learn how again.  When I try to meditate, she comes over and wants to
play.  Not so helpful when one is trying to center and ground one's
self.  Anyone have any hints on how to work with her to get her to
understand that when I'm doing this, I'm not ready to play?  I'd love it
if she would help me with some snuggling or meatloafing nearby and some
purring.  I'd settle for her ignoring me.  Unfortunately, trying to
close her out (or myself in) isn't practical because her howling and/or
shaking the door (yes, shaking the door) would be even more distracting
than her wanting to play.  Thanks!

Does she have any special toy that she really loves to play with? When I
want to meditate in the truck I have to take Harri's feather wand and
play with her for at least half an hour. If we play until she's laying
there panting watching the feather fly overhead then I know she's had
enough! I can then do my meditation without feline requests for
attention, and I occasionally get rewarded by kitten snuggles while I
meditate.

She really like to play with her mousie, and with the cat teaser (the
cardboard bits on the wire) she got for Kissamouse.  But she doesn't
really play until she's tired, more like until she's bored and wants to
play with something else.  I'll try it, though.  It's sure worth a shot.
I was also thinking that if she's good while I'm trying to meditate
that I'd reward her by going to another part of the house and playing or
giving her catnip or a treat.  You know, reward the good behavior.  Thanks!

Perhaps a good "romp" would be just as effective in relieving your stress.

Just follow your breath.  Tell yourself it's just part of the world
intruding, just as stray thoughts come and you let them go.  I'm sure
it's better than sitting in Zazen position when some intermediate
grade monk comes over and swats you on the back with a bamboo stick to
test your ability to isolate yourself from the world.  Your little
Brenna is an avatar imbued with whatever power you allow her to  have
over you.   Sometimes you may need her to remind you that simple
desire as manifested by a cat is the reality that you need to let go
of.  Sometimes she'll just be a pain in the keister.

LOL  She's good at the both things, actually.  Some days it's a good
thing she's so cute.  And I agree.  Being mrpped at and headbutted are
much better than being whapped with a stick!  Thanks for the reality
check there!  I'll have to give it a try.

If you are meditating sitting on the floor, maybe switching to a form
of gentle exercise that's performed standing up, which encourages
those who do it to focus attention on their breathing and how their
body is moving, might produce for you the inner calm you seek.  I am
thinking about Chi Kung.  I used to do this in conjunction with Tai
Chi and without doubt, both enabled me to achieve inner calm.  Chi
Kung dvd's and video tapes can be bought via the internet.

I'll not attempt to predict Brenna's reaction to seeing her Meowmie
doing Chi Kung :^)

Gosh, besides getting some good advice, I'm learning a lot too!  I had
not heard of Chi Kung or Zazen before.  Turns out the Burmese posture is
much easier on my knees than full Lotus, and sitting on the edge of a
cushion is much, much easier to get up from.  I want to learn Tai Chi,
but all the classes around here seem to be offered during the hours I
work or are expensive private classes.

So I played with Brenna until she appeared bored, then sat for a while
as though meditating.  She was very good and only came over and bothered
me twice.  Since I ignored her, she went a few feet away and flopped
down with a loud sigh.  <grin>  Afterwards I rewarded her with a new
furry mousie and more play time - in another room.  I'm hoping that is a
good sign and not a fluke.

Thanks everyone!
