My brother's Springer Spaniel Maggie is need of more purrs. Her seizures
appeared to be under control, but this morning she had another grand mal
seizure that lasted a full minute. Pat is taking her back to the vet for
more tests to figure out what's wrong.

Purrs for Maggie coming over. My lurcher Trim (RB) had some petit mal+
attacks. What I mean by this was more than "absences" Her eyebrows would
start to twitch and then her feet, her eyes would roll, but she was still
sort of conscious.
She was a very energetic dog in her youth, one of those that it was almost
impossible to tire out, and she was very naughty indeed if she wasn't at
least a bit tired. Used to wreck to food cupboards and fridge in order to
steal, that sort of thing. (She had a very bad start.)
The first of these attacks occurred when she was home again after a very
long walk (or run, rather ;-), maybe two hours and after swimming across a 5
acre lake and back because she saw 70 swans and thought she might like to
catch one <sigh>
So she was *really* tired. Whilst in her chair with sleep approaching, she
started to twitch and fit. This would last about 1 minute too.
The vet advised not to put her on epilepsy medication and once on it, it's
permanent so we waited a while. She only had a few more over the last few
years and it was always when she was very tired, and always when she was
just dropping off to sleep.
As she grew older and wasn't so hyperactive, she didn't get them any more.
She lived until she was 14 and RB caught up with her through cancer of the
liver in 1995.
I understand that even grand mal epilepsy in dogs can be well controlled by
drugs these days, although it can sometimes take a while to find the right
dosage. This is probably what's going on with Maggie.
Hope this helps.

Purrs for any animal that's in need. Hope Maggie can be treated with
routine anti-seizure drugs.

Purrs, and thoughts of my dear Clifford (RB), a charming cat often
believed to be of the opinion he was a Brittany Spaniel.

We're sending out purrs for Maggie. We've had a couple of epileptic
dogs, and it's scary to see it happen to the poor babies. I hope the
vet can find what's wrong, and that it's something easily controlled.

Sending belated purrs that TED has figured out what is causing the
problem and has a treatment plan which works
