OT: Driving on Ice - helpful advice :)

My good deed for the day :)

I was sitting here minding my own business when I heard this car just
gunning, gunning, gunning outside.  I recognized the sound of tires spinning
on ice.

I grabbed a box of rock salt (I bought several when I realized the rain
would turn to sleet last week) and gingerly walked across the lot.  The poor
woman had no idea gunning the engine just makes the tires spin, especially
with front-wheel drive.  I salted the area all around her tires.  Someone
else came out and helped me push her forward to a dry spot where a car had
been parked for days.  We pushed; it wouldn't move.  The other helper said,
"Um, release the emergency brake!" LOL

She has an automatic transmission; I told her keep it in
Low 1 or Low 2 rather than in Drive when she's going forward on ice and
don't punch the gas!   We got her going.  It's too bad for icy conditions
reverse doesn't have a low setting, too! (I drive a standard shift and don't
seem to have a problem, but I control the - don't know the word - using the
clutch.)

The main roads here are pretty much okay now but the apartment parking lot
is still a mess and there are still patches on these 2-lane less travelled
roads where you need to go slow.

Be safe everyone!

Perhaps it would have been safer for everyone concerned had you not
helped put her one the road. Just kidding ;-) One thing about being in
the military and being posted around the world is that I've always
been exposed to people who had no clue about driving in adverse
conditions.

I sense a "ha, ha, only serious" tone.

I swear, you see way too many people out there who should never have gotten a
license ... and everyone has bad days.

Oh yeah.  Especially in Thailand.  I recently found out that only 10%
of the people driving cars actually have a real licence.  The rest
have a fake one or a bribe-bought one.  With people driving
motorbikes, the number is 1%.  Scary!

I remember reading stories in Bangkok all the time (and it became a family
joke) where a bus crashed and the line was always "and the driver fled the
scene".  Yeah, because he didn't have a license and probably wasn't even
supposed to have the bus!  Heheh.

She had one of *those* bosses - had to get to work.

I suppose that's why I know how to drive on ice; I didn't always live in the
southern U.S. where such things are rare, even though I didn't have a
drivers license when we lived in snowy areas.  I watched and learned.
