Seems to be very little traffic from the US on Usenet at the moment.

Is this because of Snowmageddon, Snopocalypse, The Day of Snudgment?

Ha!  Most likely.  Hadn't heard the "Day of Snudgment".. :)

There are a lot of power outages in the affected areas, so
some might not even be able to post.

I was out shaking the snow out of the apple tree, while Katie
watched from the window.  She then observed me shoveling the
deck, not only to unload it, but to prevent ice damming from
drifts on the deck.  Pretty sure she thinks I'm just another
crazy hoomin....or could care less as long as I come back in
and feed her... ;)

Hazard just stayed curled up in his pyramid, and Oreo got
spooked every time snow fell off the roof, so she kept ducking
back in to the bedroom.

Purrs for everyone else who's snowed in!

Snudgement, LOL!

I like "Snowmageddon". Not that I've been in any way affected by this
apparent cataclysm.

I notice that there's often less traffic on weekends.

I would have thought the opposite. People who were sn*wed in would
have more time on their hands and UseNet would be alive with traffic.
But that doesn't seem to be the case. It is, in fact, quiet in all my
usual haunts.

We are in the odd position of being _North_ of the track of the storm.
We have stuff on the ground and it's bitter cold. But no sn*copalypse
here.

Same here, Will. We are north of the storm, and right now it is 5.7 F,
which is abt -14 C. Right now, there are hardly any clouds in sight, so
it will get a bit colder before morn. The low for today was only
supposed to be 10F, guess they were wrong! We will be getting some lake
effect snows tomorrow, thanks to Lake Ontario. Oh, well.

Someone mentioned power outages as a factor, which sounds like a
possibility.  Especially the parts of the country that aren't accustomed
to dealing with heavy snowfall, and where power lines are not
underground.  (I'm certainly glad I live in a part of the American
Southwest where, even though we may get heavy rainfall and flash floods,
"winter weather" without power only means possible discomfort, not the
actual danger of freezing to death!)

Most likely caused by a defective UK ISP nntp server, user error or both.

The US grinds to a halt on Super Bowl Sunday.  Even early in the day,
people prepare for watching the commercials during the game.  Not me - I'm
in the midst of a multi-day project to unpack all the books and stuff left
in the computer room from the move (nine years ago) and building a new
(cat proof) computer table.  I may not even turn the TV on.

"Cat Proof"?  Um...is that even possible, or is it just
a brain teaser for the fur kids... ;)

There are at least 107,000 people without power around
the DC area alone, much less what we don't hear about further out.

Couple that with the Super Bowl, people who are digging out
instead of being on the computer, and those of us who actually
like to go out and play, and I'd guess there'd be a slight
downturn in group traffic.

Katie decided she even wanted to go out and check out my path
on the deck.  I had to take some of the load off, as well as
clearing a drift away from the wall/window so it didn't ice dam
and get water inside the house.

The snow was at least twice her height.  She wandered around
sniffing the snow, then started the four paw shake routine.  Since
that's obviously not dignified enough, it was then time to
come in and eat... ;)

We got only 4 inches or so here in south central MO, but it was wet and
heavy - very messy.  Few of my cats even tried going out, even though I
did clean off the back steps and the cat flap platform.  I know Snooch
went out because I saw him well away from the house (trying to hide in the
snow - being dark, he's not very good at it), and earlier, jumping up
trying to catch a bird at one of the feeders (his timing and aim were both
*way* off).

Probably because the bird could see him clearly against the white
snow. :)

Or maybe because he's just hopeless at hunting.  He's beenn trying for
some time now - in all kinds of weather - with no success.  I think his
main problem is that he can't seem to stay still: he keeps moving his head
about, getting up and moving about, etc.  Chubby, who *is* successful at
bird hunting does none of those things.

I always record it so I can watch for good commercials the next day
without having to watch the game or listen to the 'announcers'  Which
reminds me I should turn off the closed caption for the sake of
everyone who will be watching the game here.

Another non sports fan checking in! (Also a late riser.)

PS - how does one prepare for watching commercials?? All I have to do
is have the mute button in reach

No, you've got it wrong.  For the Super Bowl, we mute the show and
watch and listen to the commercials.  The spots are so darn expensive
that advertisers use the time for really special new ad's when they
can.

I might have been a sports fan, with a little more time and effort.
But by the Super Bowl, usually the teams are pretty much played out
from the regular season, as well as pretty poorly matched.

Charlie will look forward to the game, but if its no contest he will
likely turn it off and go do something else.

The only Super Bowl ad I can remember really liking was the Herding
Cats one. But if there are any good ones this year, I'm sure folks will
be posting the youtube address for it in short order. :)

Since I don't watch sports, I've no idea why the obsession with "Super
Bowl" commercials.  (The sanity of sponsors who will pay something like
$3 million for a six-second spot is open to question, too.)  What leaves
me totally flabbergasted, though, is the fact that DVD's of those
commercials are actually being offered FOR SALE to the general public!

Agreed, in general. But before writing off the phenomenon entirely, you
need to see this. It's from, not sure, 2000, or '01?

I thought this years Budweiser Clydesdale with the matching Brahma

Before the weekend I saw discussions re SB ads cost, spots
specifically.
100 Grand *A SECOND*....so a 30 second spot during SB game was 30
times that, plus. I was disappointed in the quality of this year's
spots in
general, for what they paid to air them.
There probably will never be another "Herding Cats", LOL.

Well, maybe not cat *proof*, but certainly resistant to cat damage: the
frame is bare, unfinished, wood - I don't mind if they claw that, but the
top is the stuff they make kitchen counters out of, and there will be a
shelf-like stand for the monitors with room for the keyboards underneath.
It will have a splash panel at the back to prevent stuff being pushed off
the back, and boards along the ends for the same function.  My other big
gripe about cats on computer tables is muddy paw prints - they will wipe
right off, just as they do from the kitchen counters.  There will
eventually be bookshelves above it, with a solid back and lips on the
front of the shelves to prevent cats from pushing books and other stuff
off.

I have to have the TV on to watch the Puppy Bowl, with a kitten half-
time show, on Animal Planet. I liked football until the NFL made pass
defense illegal. Of course, the "city with the better food" rule means
I am rooting for the Big Easy.

Nope!!!  It was because of either the Stupor Bowl or the Puppy Bowl on
Animal Planet.  I watched both, in between bouts of snoring.  Please
