Hi Britta,

I heard on the news tonight about the earthquake off Indonesia that is
also effecting Thailand
(http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200412/s1272406.htm).  Are you
guys OK?  Are you far enough inland to be away from the Tsunami
danger?

Yeah, Britta & Dennis, you OK?
Purrs and good thoughts for all of our northern neighbours affected by this.

Hi!  Thanks for checking on us, we're ok.  The tsunami only affected
the other coast, around Phuket.  We're on the east coast on the Gulf
of Thailand and there was nothing.  We were still in bed at 8ish this
morning when the earthquake happened and didn't feel a thing.  Vino
was meowing trying to get us to get up, but he does that every morning
at this time.
My friends in Bangkok were out walking their dog when it happened and
they didn't feel anything but said that people came pouring out of
many of the high rises.  Most reported feeling something but not much.
What is really scary is that only 1 week ago we were in the worst
tsunami hit area in Thailand on our scuba trip.  Many divers are
missing, I heard between 40 and 100.  I am worried about the friends
we made of the dive crew of our boat, the MV Dolphin Queen.  I am
going to send an email to the company to see if they are all ok.

I'm glad you're OK. Purrs for your friends in Phuket, and for the
thousands of casualties.

Oh my gosh am I ever glad to hear from you. I wondered about you on my whole
9 hour drive back today!!!!!!! I thought I remembered that you and Dennis
sometimes went to Phuket on holiday. I'm so glad you were spending Christmas
at home! It is just awful.  awful awful. :((( I could not believe what I was
hearing in regards to the extent of the event and the death toll. So glad
you are ok.

I just received this email from my friend Kathy, who's husband Rob is
a helicopter engineer for the same company Dennis works for.  They
live in Songkhla, southern Thailand, but on the other coast from
Phuket.

"Just to let you all know that Rob is safe in Phuket.  He has been
busy
evacuating people from the islands.  He has been there 2 days now.  He
has
seen many dead and injured people.  Yesterday they landed the
helicopter on
Ko Lanta (island) and picked up 3 elderly sweedish people all with
broken
bones and one with a broken back.  They also dropped off supplies for
a Thai
village that had been destroyed.  Rob told me of a little 6 year old
boy
that was found floating in the ocean.  His whole family were killed.
They
took him to his village but found that it was gone, washed into the
sea.
The island that Rob was staying on last weekend and diving off has
been
destroyed.  He said that the Patong beach in Phuket has been
completely
destroyed.  The resort we usually stay at has gone.  I don't know how
long
Rob will be there for.  I will be heading back to Thailand on Sunday.
I am
in Tasmania at the moment with my family."

This is very sad.  I am wondering if the company has sent help to the
area?  We at the base up here have heard nothing of the sort but I am
going to find out.  I would love to help in some way.
