Anyone using a Weazel Ball?

Anyone using a Weazel Ball?

A Weazel Ball is a baseball size motorized ball which travels across
the floor powered by a AA battery. It comes with a tail but I removed
that. My 14 1/2 pound cat seems to like it, as usual acting shy at
first. I will give it a couple of weeks to a month and report back with
my results.

His anyone used a Weazel Ball regularly? For how long? Do you know how
long a battery lasts?

Does anyone know of a similar device? Not necessarily the same thing
with a different name, something physically different but similar in
action. Something else battery-powered that rolls around on the floor.

I bought one years ago. My cats were afraid of it, so I gave it away.

Terrified? I'm wondering whether you might be exaggerating.

[shrug] Cats vary [I've had quite a few in the 35 years I've been
around]. Mine couldn't get far enough away from the Weasel Ball fast
enough for his liking.

It means that Seanette's cat didn't like it, was scared of it and wanted to
get as far away from it as was possible.  The consensus of opinion here
(which you asked for) seems to be that the Weasel Ball frightens most cats.

I appreciate the words of caution, however extreme.

The subject line is a better clue IMO. I asked for opinions from
those who have used the device for a significant amount of time. I
suppose you wouldn't want to frighten your cat, but someone who does
might be unskilled or unmotivated at introducing such things.

One thing for sure (you might disagree), if you just take the ball
out of the box and show it to your cat, your cat won't be terrified.

To whom it may concern. I drilled another small hole in the ball and
attached a three-foot nylon string (disclaimer: don't let your cat
eat a string). There are knots along the length of the string.
Kitty is all over it, so far. He grabs the end of the string and the
ball rolls back in his direction. To start, our play periods are short and I
am right there coaching him because I want it to work. And I see
many other possibilities for the infamous Weazel Ball (or Squirrel
Ball). If it turns out all bad, I will acknowledge that.

I'm not going to torture my cat with an item that had him in a panic
nearly immediately, and I do NOT appreciate some arrogant new arrival
in the group automatically assuming that my cat's distaste for a toy
said new human personally likes means that I'm a lazy or incompetent
cat owner.

You'll be out of my bozo bin in a few days. Hope your attitude
improves in that time.

This recipe is SO good that it bears posting here again:

Turkey Rosemary Soup

1 turkey breast (bone in)
2 cups chicken broth (if you can find turkey you could use that. I can never
find it.)
1 cup carrot pieces
2 stalks celery cut up in one inch pieces
1 onion thinly sliced
1 tsp. dried rosemary

I browned the turkey breast in a little olive oil. Poor 2 cups of broth into
the crockpot. Mix in the tsp. rosemary. Add vegetables. Set turkey breast on
top. Cook on low 8 to ten hours. In the end, I just took the bones out and
tore up the turkey into the broth to make a turkey soup. Salt and pepper
individual servings to your liking. This had such a delicate flavor I
couldn't believe it. Phase 1 people could fish out the carrots, but I'd
still use them for the flavor of the broth. Phase two folk could throw a
handful of wheat pasta in.

OK, John must really be desperate for recipes, so here goes (I think I may
have posted this one before??)...

Mock Stuffed Artichoke

4 cans French cut style string beans (the kind with the pimentos is OK to
use)
1 can Progresso Itallian flavored bread crumbs
1 can grated parmesean cheese
salt & pepper to taste

In a casserole layer the beans, bread crumbs, and cheese and then top
sprinkle a lot of cheese on the top and moisten with the fluid from the
beans.  Bake at 350 for 1 hour.

Tastes just like New Orleans style stuffed artichoke.

Excerpts from the FAQ for news:rec.pets.cats.anecdotes

6.4.6 The Trollbeque

By Pam Shirk and JEM

Like all usenet groups we get an occasional troll in rpca
(rec.pets.cats.anecdotes). We have found that instead of feeding them, it is
better and more fun to feed off of them. So, when we get an obvious troll,
we have a troll-beque. We exchange troll recipes and suggest foods that we'd
like to bring or eat at our international troll-beque. Whether or not the
member wishes to join in the troll burning festivities is fully up to them.
We have never had to troll-beque one of our regular posters, though I'm sure
it has been thought of on occasion.

Now since, as we all know, trolls are utterly inedible (if not downright
poisonous) no matter how carefully and thoroughly they're marinated,
tenderized, etc., making/eating Troll-B-Q is a bit like making/eating Stone
Soup..The Troll gets tossed out after it's been well roasted in the flames,
and we gorge ourselves on the myriad wonderful potluck "side dishes" the
NG's members have volunteered to provide for the party.

and

7.2.6 Off Topic

We all know that conversation wanders off the original subject. Because we
encourage conversation over strict netiquette, off-topic banter is just part
of the social glue that has made us all friends. Mostly people don't bother
to change the subject line to indicate that the subject has drifted away
from cats. However, if you are considering making a new post that is off
topic, consider whether most members of the group would be interested, and
also try to remember to tag it with an [OT] Warning Tag. Note that the
subject of food comes a close second to the subject of cats on this group. A
food thread does not need the [OT] label as it has become a"on" topic by
sheer popularity. Books come third.

For John Doe: Off Topic.  Troll :)

Bought a nice mini French baguette (freshly baked) and a variety of cheeses.
I like fairly soft cheeses such as brie, fontina, baby swiss for snacking.
Also got some crunchy whole grain melba toast rounds and I made an artichoke
lemon pesto; excellent with savory crackers:

2 cans artichoke hearts, drained and rinsed
5 cloves garlic
3 Tbs. capers
1 Tbs. pine nuts (pigolis) or chopped walnuts
2 green onions, diced
the zest and juice of one fresh lemon
1 c. freshly grated Parmesan or Romano cheese
1/4 to 1/2 c. olive oil, as needed

Blend all ingredients except oil in a food processor or blend until smooth.
Add the oil to desired texture.  Store refrigerated in tightly covered jars.
Makes about 4 cups.

Thanks, Jill, that went into my recipe folder. Here's a tomato and
cashew pesto that I like:

200 ml sundried tomatoes
100 ml olive oil or the oil from the tomatoes
100 ml cashew nuts
2 cloves garlic
20-25 leaves of fresh basil
1/2 - 1 tsp salt
50 ml grated Parmesan cheese
(herbs to taste, I usually add a lot of oregano, which I love)

Blend all the ingredients. Serve with pasta.

The troll-B-Q is a long-running custom in rec.pets.cats.anecdotes,

As such, it is on-topic, and you are the one acting as a troll.  If
you persist in labeling every other poster in the newsgroup as a
troll, this will only lead to a general opinion that you yourself are
a troll, and will probably lead to a lot of people killfiling you.

Sorry John, the battery died from lack of use (time) as opposed to use. So
my "product testing" won't help you much with battery usage. But my
anecdotal evidence is that the batteries don't last long, 1 - 2 hours.

We've bought all kinds of toys and the most successful have been the free
ones; string (supervised), crumpled up paper, empty box/bag. The minor
exceptions were the scratching circles with the ball, wind up mice (small
ones) and the small foam balls.

I'm curious - why on EARTH would you want to remove the
"weasel/squirrel", when that's the feature that makes it
attractive to cats, thus the whole point of buying it in the
first place?  I posted about them here, a month or so ago -
along with the link to an internet source for them.
However, the one I have calls itself a "Squirrel Ball", and
is quite a bit larger than a baseball - slightly larger than
a softball, actually.  Melisande seems to love it at times.
(What cat is EVER consistent in its likes and dislikes?)
It's especially funny when the darned thing suddenly turns
tail and starts chasing her!

Well, mine is still working on its first battery, so they
last a reasonable length of time.  (Since I always have AA
and AAA batteries on hand, replacing it isn't likely to be a
problem.)

I've seen various motorized mice, etc., but most of those
won't run on carpet - the Squirrel Ball will.
Marie Lawrence - 26 Dec 2004 09:44 GMT
It is now about 12 hours since Annabell had her kittens. She has settled
with them,  lying on her side and feeding them.  I have not interferred with
the kittens much until she came out of bed to have dinner.  I was able to
get a better look at them, although she hopped back with them,  I was able
to see that there are 3 Oriental long hairs, 1 blue tabby,  and 2 lilacs.
The other 3 are a mystery for a few weeks,  but they are Balinese.
Annabell is a blue Oriental long hair,  and the sire is a lilac tabby point
Balinese.  Oriental long hairs are known as Javanese in some countries.

The reason for my concern with Annabell's mothering qualities is that this
is her third litter. Her first litter was only one kitten,  she quickly lost
interest, {not unusual with a single kitten in the first litter }  I was
able to foster her baby to another nursing mother, and we still have that
girl,  now spayed. Her next litter was neglected to the point where she
dragged them about until they all died.  This was her last chance to have
babies,  we decided that she did not like being in a kitten pen,  so we put
her in the bathroom where she had more space. Along with a hormone shot from
the vet,  and a room to herself,  it seems that we may have solved the
problem.  I have experienced this hormone problem sometimes in the past,  it
seems to crop up sometimes in her line.  A tiny injection of eostrogen works
like magic.  Fingers crossed,  Marie from OZ

It's doing fine so far. One practical reason is to help it run better
on something other than a hard floor.

I might try various things, inside or attached.

I just looked, thanks. I will check it out. I might try to lighten
the current toy. There is a weight inside which probably can be
reduced. There is plenty of room for experimentation while it remains
exciting to them.

>  (What cat is EVER consistent in its likes and dislikes?)

And like other animals, cautious at first meeting (duh).

>It's especially funny when the darned thing suddenly turns
>tail and starts chasing her!

They cannot easily ignore it. Besides making sure it doesn't
"terrify" them, the only problem I see is maybe them eventually
becoming bored. It looks safe enough since it is round.

This isn't a big deal IMO unless it works well, but here's a tip for
people who don't know how to introduce such a thing. Don't just stop
trying if it's not love at first sight. One way to tell when a cat is
nervous is when it licks its lips. And do not leave the thing running
for a long time at first meeting.

Thanks again. Have fun.

Maybe that's why your cat hasn't shown much interest?  The

bought it), and it's clearly the tag-along critter that
attracts and holds Melly's attention.

Ummm.... I think it's that "weight inside" which makes the
thing move in random directions - if you "lighten" that,
you'll probably get even less action from it.  (As it is, it
tends to hang itself up on baseboards, etc. for quite a
while before it works its way free and takes off again.)

Disclaimer: I guess the consensus here is that the Weazel Ball (or
Squirrel Ball) is less than useful to most cats.

I just noticed on TV they are selling a "Robo Maid" for $18
(including shipping to USA). Apparently it is basically the same
thing and includes a built in rechargeable battery with charger. It
would be a lot easier to start and stop play, assuming your cat likes
it. You would have to attach the weasel/string/whatever (disclaimer:
do not let your cat eat string) part.

That's just FYI/FWIW.
