Berfert stopped eating today, so we rushed him into TED. Turns out that
the Berf probably has either bacterial or fungal pneumonia. There was a
small lump in his lungs that TED said could be from all the fluid on the
baby's lungs, but he suspects cancer.
Berfert was also severely dehydrated and had to have an IV infusion
today and go in tomorrow for another one. He has rallied enough from
the first infusion to be able to hide under the bed and require two
people to get him out from under there.
I'll be honest, I'm worried. I also have a huge soft spot for the Berf.
He was my bad boy before Pine Cone came in and took over the role. He
used to sucker the other cats into no-win situations and then sit on the
sidelines and laugh at them. I hope that he's going to be all right.
Folks, I could really use some purrs and prayers for the Berf to feel
better. We really love the little guy.

Pam, I'll get the fur crew to rev up the get well fast purrs for
Berfert. I know they helped me feel better after my surgery, so
I'll redirect their healing efforts in Berferts' direction *and*
yours. Hopefully the rehydration will help spur his appetite and
help give him the energy to fight off the pneumonia.

Purrs from New Zealand are really powerful because they have so far to

Poor guy! :( I'm sorry he's so sick, and I sure hope it's not cancer!
Pneumonia can at least be treated! (I've never heard of fungal pneumonia,

Generally not your household molds, although there are a few
disease-producing sorts that may grow in wet spots. Many are treatable
with antibiotics specific for the purpose. Treatment often takes a while.

Yes, Dr Stevenson's got Berfert's case. He's a really good TED, but not
as up on the latest procedures as I'd like. There's just so much new
stuff going on that it's almost impossible for a generalist TED to keep
up with it all. The cats all feel comfortable with him (except Pine
Cone, and he likes the woman TED that works there) and he really cares
about the cats.
I really appreciate the purrs and prayers going out for Berfert. I've
been telling Mike about them, and plan to print them off for him to
have. I have also been reading them to Berfert. I'm hoping that he
gets the hint.

In humans, at least, X-ray shadows in the lung can be an aftereffect
of histoplasmosis infections (see
http://www.lung.ca/diseases/histoplasmosis.html). This is a fungal
infection, spread mostly by the dust from bird droppings. The lungs
develop calcium deposits surrounding the infections, which then show
up on X-rays for the rest of the patient's life.
I have such a shadow in one of my lungs. It was discovered during a
chest X-ray about five years ago. Since I have never smoked, the
doctor decided to wait and make a couple more X-rays over the next
year, rather than operate immediately. The spot has never changed
size or shape, indicating that it is probably a calcium deposit, not
a tumor of any kind.
The opening text on the above web site states
