WE GOT
SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

It's only about 4 inches here in B-ton, but they are predicting that it will
continue to fall (it is still coming down as I type) and accumulation will
be anywhere from 16 - 22 inches!!!!!!

Snow Men-er PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Snow
Angels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Idiots That Shouldn't Be On The Road Even If The Roads Are
Dry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been watching an Indy station, and they are showing how many people are
sliding off the ramps to/from 465.

All the kitties are sniffing my damp ankles after I went out while DH was
showering & started his car, cleared it off & shoveled the walk (driveway is
gravel, not very sovelable), fed the 'outdoor' kitties by the garage
(couldn't find their dish, so I just dumped it on the ground).  Just
realized that the news is listing school closings.... when I was a kid, we
had off the whole 2 weeks for Christmas/New Years... I guess a lot of
schools are shortening the holiday break so they don't have to stay in
school later in the summer?????

I called my mom this morning (shocked her I was up this early LOL), and
she's saying one of her friends/neighbors is kinda schtoopeed:  she says she
*HAS* to go to the post office!!!  They went to the grocery yesterday, and
she (the neighbor/friend) was amazed at the crowd that was there - they not
only were circling the lot for parking places, but people were having to
wait for shopping carts! Other people were buying cartloads of stuff like
they thought it was going to be the Blizzard of '78 all over again!  The
good news is that we have better 'prediction' of such things, so road crews
& such can be better prepared.  Of course, in '78 there was about 4 feet of
snow, with 10 foot drifts, and it really was a BLIZZARD (it all came down in
a couple of hours), but now it's coming down gently & it will take a couple
of days to get to what was predicted (they're saying it will continue to
come down until Thursday).

I forgot to add that I'm halfway tempted to go downtown and/or near campus
so I can watch the 'southerners' try to drive!  Of course, I would do so
from the top floor of one of the parking garages, where I'm less likely to
get run over ;)

No chance of snow here in PA. From single digits & negative wind chills
on Monday, we're supposed to be in the 50s by Christmas. Oh well...

As I type this we've got 8 inches on the ground in Scottsburg (about
40 miles south of where MMJ is), and it's coming down harder all the
time. I'm not sure of what the total accumulation is supposed to be
when this ends noontime Thursday - I think the Louisville (KY) TV
stations are afraid to tell us <g>

picky picky, I was measuring from the "Bloomington exit" on I-65 ^_-

At least we don't have as much in the way of hills to deal with as you
do in Bloomington. I was just outside getting the mail, and was very
happy Dad had swept(1) off the sidewalk earlier. Having cleared off
the snow earlier made it easier to tell where the sidewalk was
supposed to be when I went out! (it was up to just below my knees, but
I suspect at least part of that was due to drifting)

(1) yes, *swept*. It is a dry powdery snow down here, and a snow
shovel is not really necessary right now.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!  I am heading your way (actually
going to Ohio) and they're saying 10 inches of snow overnight tonight on
the last 1/2 of our drive.  Hmmm.  We were leaving tomorrow morning.
Maybe we'll wait until tomorrow afternoon now.  One good thing is that I
have complete and total confidence that the snow will be removed.  When
I lived in North Carolina the highway guy in our part of the state would
come on and say "we have solar powered snow removal equipment" meaning
it stayed there until it melted.

I live in East Texas, so we have
RAIN!!!!!RAIN!!!!!RAIN!!!!!RAIN!!!!!RAIN!!!!!  I grew up in Ohio, and I know
to stay off the roads anytime we do get a small amount of snow or ice (which
is every few years).  People don't know how to drive on it, and there is no
salt for roads -- they will spread some sand on certain bridges, but that is
about it.  I remember standing in line in a grocery store a couple of days
before Christmas my first year here, and it was raining "cats and dogs," as
we used to say.  I heard a customer in line in front of me say, "Now THIS is
more like Christmas!"  I nearly doubled up with laughter.

How did Holly get her name? Was she a Christmas kitty?

Now you've done it...actually *asked* me to talk about my furbabies! I'm
like the grandmother with an accordian-pleated file of photos. I don't know
how to keep it short when I talk about Holly and Duffy.

I adopted Holly the day after Thanksgiving (9 years ago). Amber had died
following a long illness less than a month earlier, at the age of 16. I had
finally made the agonizing decision that "it was time" because there was no
longer any hope of a quality life for her. Holidays are often a poor time to
adopt because of all the hustle and bustle, but it is a good time for me
because I have free time then. So, I went to the animal shelter the day
after Thanksgiving to look into beginning an adoption procedure, but they
were closed. Then I went to a local store that sells pet food and pet
supplies because they often have cats and kittens that people have "dropped
off" to see if they can be adopted. The cages were empty. However, I stood
around talking to one of the women who worked there. She had talked to me
many times over the previous year as I bought supplies for Amber, and she
told me about Holly and asked me "if I would consider" her. This woman had
rescued Holly from a local breeder (at least, that's how I look at it). The
woman was trying to create a specific type of cat, and she mixed a purebred
Oriental shorthair with a purebred Persian. However, Holly wasn't "good
enough" for her. Why not? Simply the color!!! The woman wanted dusty gray
and Holly is solid black. The breeder had intended to "dispose of" Holly for
that reason, and this wonderful woman from the pet store talked the breeder
into letting her try to find a home for Holly instead. Holly was with her
for several months and was about 6 months old at the time I first saw her.
So, I agreed to "look" at Holly, met the woman the next day, and adopted
Holly on the spot. However, her name wasn't Holly then. It was "Jinx"
because she was a "bad luck cat." I thought she deserved a beautiful, loving
name, not a name like Jinx. So, her name became Holly, which was derived
from "Holiday" because I adopted her in-between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
So, you were pretty close with your guess about her name. And, in my
opinion, Holly is a "good luck cat"!

As for Duffy, I was looking through Petfinder at possible cats for a friend
who wanted to adopt. In fact, that was my introduction to Petfinder.
Megan -- who I "met" though this group and health+behav and who helped me
with many cat-related medical issues -- was on the phone and was walking me
through the process. There we saw the picture of Duffy. He looked sad and
dejected, and we thought he was an old cat from the picture. He was also
blind, and had been in a cage at the animal shelter for several months. The
friend who had been looking for a cat would not even consider him. The
information on the Petfinder web site also mentioned that he had previously
been adopted, then was returned to the shelter after two years. The thought
of that little guy just tore at my heartstrings, but I thought I couldn't
possibly adopt another cat because Holly had always reacted very violently
when any other cat was in my proximity. When I visited my sister in the
summers, we would have to keep Holly and her cats in different areas of the
house because Holly would attack the other cats so viciously. In fact, we
called her "the black tornado" at that time. But, Megan kept insisting that
"I could do it" and she promised to give me lots of help in learning how to
bring the two cats together. So, I called the shelter (located in a town
about 30 miles away) to inquire, and the director of the shelter told me
that the woman who previously adopted Duffy said he was "a wonderful cat"
but complained that "even though he was blind" he had found a way to get to
her pet birds and had killed one, and that he was even "teaching" her
sighted cat to get to the birds. I couldn't believe the supidity and lack of
love displayed in that simple statement! I also learned that Duffy wasn't
"old" - he was estimated to be between 3 and 5 years old. So, as with Holly,
I made arrangements to make the trip to the shelter and "look" at Duffy. Of
course, it was rather "telling" on my part that I downloaded their adoption
paperwork and already had it filled out before I left home! Once I saw
Duffy, I fell instantly in love with him and he with me. He was all over me
as I sat with him -- cuddling against me, rubbing his little face against
mine, purring, etc. The staff were amazed. They said he was normally very
timid, and I learned that was true after I took him home 3 days later (which
is their required waiting period for adoption during which time they have an
evaluation by their house veterinarian). He seemed to trust me completely
from the start, but he would go into hiding every time the doorbell rang and
wouldn't come out for a couple of hours. All of that ended long ago. He now
loves attention from everyone, and he and Holly both head directly "to"
anyone who visits. And, Megan was true to her word. She walked me, step by
step, through all the things I needed to do to create an atmosphere where
Holly would accept Duffy. It worked beautifully, and the two cats are now
buddies. It will be 2 years on Feb. 1 since I adopted Duffy.

Thanks for asking...and my apologies if I have (once again) become far too
wordy in answering a simple question.

I enjoy Holly and Duffy stories.  I'm always amazed at how well Duffy
gets around in life.  I considered adopting a blind kitty once, would
have except his foster dad became all possessive when I showed interest.
He told me he'd cry when this kitty went to its forever home and
wouldn't let her go to a house that had other kitties (at that time I
only had two).  I think in reality he wanted to keep her and I hope that
in the end he did just that, the obviously loved each other.

But please, keep the Holly and Duffy stories coming, they are an
inspiration.

Aww. What nice stories. And what beautiful kids. I'm so glad for you
that it worked out well & both are happy. Duffy sure came a long way
with love, didn't he? :)

I always envy people whose cats are buddies. I've never had cats that
got along very well. My current family is Daisy & Miss Moxie. Moxie is
dominant, & has to remind Daisy of that, frequently. And poor old Daisy
freqently approaches Moxie, seemingly in friendship, & is always
rebuffed. She never learns. But it's not bad. They don't really fight.

I've never read Holly's story.  Some people make me sick =/  It's wonderful
that you were able to provide a home for her.  Naming a cat as bad luck for
being the wrong color ... I've never heard such tripe =/

Coming down here heavily in Ohio right now.  We're supposed to get 6-8
inches today, and another 6-8 inches tomorrow. Meanwhile, Cosmo is low
on catnip, and we're low on tobacco.  They're starting to close
factories and businesses early, and it's looking like I'm going to
have no choice but to somehow sludge through a snowstorm to get
tobacco and cat food.  I hope Cosmo appreciates my dedication!

Magic Mood Jeep? - 23 Dec 2004 15:50 GMT
Another pile of snow got dumped on us last night!

I think we have a total of 16-20 inches.

Again I shoveled the walk & started DH's car (& cleaned the snow off it to
boot), and fed the outdoor kitties.  DH went off to work, and about 20
minutes I get a call - He's there, and aparantly the only one.  He was going
to to a bit of catching up on his email & then come back home.

Half an hour later, I hear horns honking right outside the house - turns out
DH's vehicle is stuck at the bottom of the drive (the slope there is the
steepest), and needs me to check the road so he can back straight across &
make a run for it up the drive.  It takes 2 tries, and between tries only
*ONE* car comes past the house:  A CAMERO!!!!!.  He rolls his window down
and asks if we need help.  We really don't (DH just needs to keep control of
vehicle during the ascent up the driveway & NOT hit the house (driveway runs
past the house, only about 6 feet away from it) in the process).  The only
other vehicle we I saw during that time was a snow plow leaving the
apartment complex a block up the road from us.

Oh, I might mention that the car DH drives 98% of the time is a Land Rover
Discovery, which is all wheel drive & has computerized traction control -
all pretty much usleless on packed snow/ice. :(

I need to bug Weebs to reply to the email he got from his girlfriend,
Persia, just a bit ago (I'm a diligent Mommy, I make sure he gets no
improper emails)
