The stinker!

Dan M - 21 Dec 2004 16:41 GMT I mentioned a couple days ago about how Harri learned to get inside the wallks of the truck, and about how I blocked her entrance points with a towel stuffed in the hole.
This morning I walked into the truck stop to buy some supplies and some breakfast before we left to make our delivery. When I returned to the truck I called to Harri and told her we had warm roast beef for breakfast. She greeted this news with an enthusiastic meow. From somewhere above my head.
I unwrapped the roast beef sandwich so she could smell it, and immediately heard Harri scrambling through the nether regions of the truck. A few seconds later her head popped out of the overhead and she joined me for breakfast. When we finished I checked in the overhead - the towel was still in place. That little stinker found *another* way into the air spaces. I found one more opening big enough for a kitten to get through and stuffed it with a towel. I brought 4 towels with me. One is folded up on the dash for a kitten bed, one is spread on the passenger seat to give her something to jump on to, and two are blocking kitty holes in the overhead. Hmmm.
Anyhjow, I decided this morning that there are simply more kitten-sized openings that I can stuff with towels. For the next day or so that it takes us to get home I guess Harri is going to have the run of the dark and secret places. Since she discovered that I can't block her, she's spent the whole morning in the overhead. Sort of like she's saying "Nyah, nyah, nyah, I can go where I want to and you can't stop me!".
I'm just going to have to keep a ready supply of treats on hand to lure her out from time to time. And maybe being able to take a kitten walk again will help.
Pat - 21 Dec 2004 17:07 GMT Geez, Dan, I sure hope there's no way for her to get from whatever is behind those holes, into your engine, or worse, out onto the open road!
I was also thinking that if I was a kitten, I would sure use my claws to pull a cloth out of a hole that I wanted to crawl through.
Three of my six have figured out how to open the locked cat flap by hooking a claw in the edge and pulling, then sticking their head under it and crawling out. So I have to put a heavy box in front of the flap to keep them in at night.

I remember when they were learning I used to hear this knock every so often, but I had to catch them in the act before I realized that they were hooking the lower cupboard doors with a paw and claws. Sometimes, it bounced closed too quickly, hence the odd knocking noise. But if they got the door open far enough, they could get their head in before it closed and the rest of their body rapidly followed, allowing them to explore the dishes or canned goods.
Any cat food in paper or cardboard containers is stored in a cupboard well above floor level; in fact, above any flat surface. There is a good reason for this. Well, a *reason*, I can't think of a good reason for a cat getting her own food from a box or bag when exactly the same food is sitting in her dish.

One day I walked in and the lower drawer where I store the placemats and napkins was open. I'm sure glad I looked before I kicked it shut - Persia had gotten in, then gotten *behind* the drawer. If I hadn't spotted those glowing eyes I could have hurt her.

If I hadn't spotted those glowing eyes I could have hurt her. When the movers were packing up my apartment last week, I put Natasha in the bathroom. It was cold outside, and the bathroom was the warmest room in my apartment. Plus there wouldn't be people tromping in and out of there.
After a couple hours I went to check on her, and didn't see her - not in her bed, not playing in the tub, not hiding behind the toilet. Something made me open the cupboard doors (no latches or knobs) underneath the bathroom sink and take a peek. There she was, curled up in the dark in the back corner.
I knew Tribble (RB) had figured out how to open a similar cupboard in the kitchen (where the pots and pans were kept), I didn't realize Natasha had learned the same trick!

Mandy does that with the file drawer in my desk. The back is lower than the sides, and she can somehow get in there from the front, and I think from under and behind, too.
One thing they have fortunately grown out of is napping in the clothing on the top shelf of my closet. When they were younger, getting up was no problem; make a leap for the top of the door; if necessary, dig the front claws in up there, and scrabble the back ones against the door (with results you can imagine!) until all four paws are on top of the door. Then it was a short leap to the shelf. They never got down the same way. They came out over the edge of the shelf head first, balanced their front paws on whatever clothing was on the nearest hanger, and then scrambled down over the clothes until they felt like jumping. It's a good think I didn't go in for expensive dresses made of delicate fabrics!

Christine Burel - 22 Dec 2004 01:03 GMT Harri sure has sure made this run a memorable one! Give her scritches from me when you are again graced with her presence. Christine
