I just realised that cats have their very own Global Positioning System
(yes, I'm a bit slow).
I moved my bed yesterday. This was, of course, very upsetting to the
cats, especially Frank, who spends most of his life in said bed. The bed
used to stand with the headboard against the wall, now I turned it so
that the side is against the wall.
Frank always used to sleep on the left-hand (for a person lying on her
back in the bed) pillow. Now, after showing me his displeasure at the
bed having moved, he settled down at the foot of the bed. However, I
realised that that is the same spot in relation to the room where he
used to sleep, i.e. the left side of the foot of the bed is now where
the left-hand pillow used to be. So he's really sleeping in the same
spot as before.
When I went to bed last night, he did come up for scritches and lay on
the pillow next to me for a while, but then he retired to his own spot.
Maybe the transmissions from the Mothership are stronger there.

Yup. We had all kinds of territory confusion when I moved here until I moved
the bed to face the same direction as it had in the OLD apartment. Then
everything went back to normal. Wierd, huh?

LOL, that's hilarious! I never noticed that. But then, my apartment is
so small that my current arrangement of furniture is about the only one
that could possibly work, and I haven't changed anything since I first
moved in here 5 1/2 years ago. So I haven't had the opportunity to test
your theory. But it does have sound logic, so I'll believe it on faith.
Maybe they can sense the earth's magnetism?
On a related note, I've noticed that cats who sleep next to each other
tend to copy one another's positions. I love waking up and finding three
little furballs in the same position. Invariably, though, one of the 3
will be in a skewed version of the position - for example, if Roxy and
Smudge are curled in a clockwise position, Licky will also be curled,
but counterclockwise. If Roxy and Smudge are in "croissant" position
facing the same wall (and lying along parallel lines), Licky will be
facing the opposite wall. Yes, it's usually Licky who likes to throw
the monkey wrench into the synchronized sleeping act. :)
