Ginger-lyn Summer - 19 Dec 2004 20:15 GMT I have a dear friend I met online several years ago, and she is the President of the Board of Directors of a no-kill shelter. They have a raffle once or twice a year. This year's raffle featured a couple of things: a really nice candle basket with all sorts of goodies, and a beautiful, hand-made quilt featuring cats on it. I *really* wanted that quilt. So I sent in my few dollars with my few raffle tickets. DH didn't think I stood a snowball's check in you-know-where of winning.
And then my friend called me the other night. "YOU WON THE QUILT!"
Woo-hoo!!!!!!!! First time I've won something in ages, and the pictures of it look so lovely. She always sends me a Yule gift box, so she's going to add the quilt to it when she sends it.
I can't wait!
Maybe my luck is finally changing . . . .

My mother wouldn't let me keep it and I had to give it away. :-(

They seem to be intelligent animals. Parents can be such kill-joys. I won something once, but it was so long ago, I cannot remember when or what it was. I hope your furry ones enjoy the quilt. MLB

I hope your furry ones enjoy the > quilt. I've won quite a few things in my life - not for talent, but raffles and such. When I didn't have much else to do, I used to enter every single competition that I knew of that cost the price of a stamp or less to enter. You'd be surprised at just how many "give aways" they have in papers and magazines. The entries would probably cost me about $10 a fortnight, but I "won" a fair amount of stuff, most of it was just free samples of shampoo, soap and hte like, but I have also won a cheap acoustic guitar (I don't have a muscial bone in my body, though) and one of those hand held portable vacuum cleaners. Of course, I also got *alot* of junk mail because my name and address was on a thousand lists, but I really have no problem with snail mail junk (I am a catalogue junkie).
At the moment, I seem to have got myself on a list that gives away free samples of baby paraphenalia, I've got 3 normal disposable diapers, 2 swimming diapers, 2 "pull ups" (ie, like normal underwear but still absorbant in case of accidents), some baby soap, a small tube of baby shampoo, and two small tubs of baby cream, plus a mass of discount coupons for baby-related equipment (like high chairs and baths) and toys. That, along with the plethora of Christmas cards, now makes the trip to the letter box worth it, despite the presence of bills in there!

You're on that for obvious reasons. But I'm on it for innocently buying presents for my little nephew. I had a box of Enfamil (baby formula) dropped on my doorstep last week. :P

Now that I think of it, when I was quite little, I won a really hideous salad set at the St. Anthony Festival in Little Italy. ;)

Pam S. who's still plugging away on the family cat quilt from time to time
Sherry - 20 Dec 2004 04:26 GMT >Pam S. who's still plugging away on the family cat quilt from time to time HA! You should see my quilt-in-progress. It's a great quilt, from Laurel Burch fabric. Unfortunately, it's still 6-inch squares, and has been for 2 years. :(

My quilt is also in 6 inch squares, but over half of them are stitched together. I've been putting a narrow strip of green cloth between each square so that each stands out better. The thing hangs from the floor, across a queen sized bed, and to the floor on the other side. I still need to finish the top, get some sort of quilting frame, and get the blasted thing put together.

Oh, getting a quilt top together is EASY. I've got tons of them laying around the house. It's the basting together the layers and actually quilting it that's tough. When I can afford it, I prefer to quilt by check. At least then it gets done.

Tanada - 20 Dec 2004 23:28 GMT > Greetings... > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > lal Ok, Lisa, I'm game, where do you send it to get the quilting done? I figure we're close enough in distance that maybe, if I can afford it, I can have it done professionally too.

lal - 21 Dec 2004 14:28 GMT >> Greetings... >> [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > > Pam S. lazy and intimidated There's a local quilt shop that has a long-arm machine, Arch Angel. That's where I've had it done before. I know there's a quilt shop in Fayetteville that I've heard good things about... Loving Stitches. They have a web site & offer quilting: http://www.lovingstitches.net/ Mind you, it ain't cheap. I had a double size quilt done a bit over a year ago, it cost around $90... I think. Give them a visit and see what you think.

Once again, I've bought a bunch of raffle tickets for the one of the quilts they make for the Cancer society to raffle off. They're gorgeous, but I never win one. I'll have to check them out.

(Wait a minute --- isn't that what I always say when I rescue a cat and *mean* to take it to the shelter?)
