These are great pictures.   I have been reading the story of Pale Male
with interest.   So pleased they are reinstating him, wow, what a bird!

Isn't he lovely?  He was wonderful to watch in flight, swooping
around.
The co-op board has agreed to replace the spikes that anchored the
old nest.  So one they do that, it will be up to the birds.  I'm
hoping they come back, but it's possible that he won't.

Hey, it's winter.  He's fluffed up.
I wonder where Lola is.

T., still hoping he gives a lifted middle claw to the co-op board and
comes back.;)

Sorry, I was being facetious. :o) I know all about fluffed-up birds in
winter. All the birds I see this time of year are fluffed up. We had
some snow again. This morning, as I was on my way to my 'spa' treatment,
I saw a little sparrow hunting for food on the tram stop. I don't know
if he found anything, but he looked so pathetic, a fluffy little ball of
feathers running around on the frozen ground. Wish I'd had some bread
crumbs along.

He looks like he has his feathers well puffed out in order to keep
warm.  Birds have muscles at the base of the feathers that let them
flatten the feathers in warm weather, or set the feathers at more of
a puffed-out angle in cold weather, in order to give some control
over the degree of insulation, just as furred creatures can do with
their fur.  Human "goosebumps" are a vestigial version of fur-raising
in response to cold or fright.

Any birds here in Nashville will need to have their feathers well
puffed-out tonight.  The current temperature is 19 degrees
Fahrenheit, predicted to go down to 10 degrees, with sub-zero wind
chills (current temperature -7 Celsius, going down to -12 Celsius,
with wind chills below -17 Celsius).

So when you hear a beautiful passage of music or a haunting story,
and you get goosebumps, is that cold or fright? :) Seriously, I wonder
why our "fur" is raised when we're emotionally moved (but not by fear)?

Beats me.  I own a small parrot; she fluffs up to keep warm.  I don't fluff
up; I put on a sweater :)  I do get goosebumps if I'm cold but I don't
recall ever being so scared I got goosebumps; I have more the fight rather
than flight reaction.  I will not discuss other emotional reactions which
might raise goosebumps ;-)

I *love* the mad bluebird!  I nearly bought a stained glass sun-catcher
repro of this famous photo several years ago.  He does look rather cranky,
doesn't he? LOL

Yup-- prefect for an "I Don't Like Mondays" kind of caption. ;)

MB made a mint for the photographer, whose backyard he lived in.  Even
funnier, when he eventually attracted a mate, the photog took a
picture of her that looked as indignant as her husband. ;)

Wow.

Glad to see he's OK.  There are a number of red-tails around the city
now-- mostly PM's offspring.
