----------------------------------------------- Guinea pig's flight could land someone in trouble Rodent in good shape at shelter after harrowing parachute experience by Michael Koryta, Herald-Times Staff Writer December 17, 2004
She was cold and scared, missing some fur that had come off with the masking tape from her parachute, but she was alive.
A guinea pig that was hurled from an eighth-floor dormitory room at Indiana University Thursday afternoon is at the Bloomington Animal Shelter today, and those who sent her airborne could be facing some stiff penalties.
"What happened was some young men on the eighth floor of a local dorm decided to throw their guinea pig out a window," said Leigh Ann Hoffacker, the shelter manager.
"They used dental floss and masking tape and a garbage bag to create a parachute, and the poor thing got hung up in a tree."
Enter IU freshman Laura Robinson, a Pendleton native who spotted the descending rodent. "My friend and I were on our way to get some lunch and we looked up and we saw her fall into the tree," Robinson said.
Robinson considered calling the fire department, but janitors at Briscoe Quadrangle decided they could rescue the guinea pig from a third-floor window. They succeeded, and handed the small creature over to Robinson.
"I took it to the animal shelter," Robinson said. "There was string and tape tied around it and it had some hair ripped out from the tape. It was really sad. I think it probably would have died if it hadn't gotten stuck in the tree."
Hoffacker agreed that it was sad - and an example of animal abuse.
"We contacted the IU police but I don't know if they'll do anything," she said. "Once they can find out who was responsible, our animal control office can issue them a $500 ticket for animal abuse. Whoever did this did it in broad daylight - they just didn't care, and I think it is quite disturbing."
Hoffacker said the exact identities of the young men who threw the guinea pig had not been confirmed as of Thursday afternoon, but explained that the dorm administration had narrowed the list.
The guinea pig was reportedly in good shape following the incident.
"She was scared and cold and shaking when they brought her in," Hoffacker said. "But now she is eating some alfalfa and seems just fine."
Robinson said it was against dorm rules to have such an animal in a room, let alone toss it from a window. She said if no owner comes forward, she will claim the guinea pig and take it to her parents' house. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guinea Pig is a pretty thing, white with tan around it's eyes/ears. And I'm not big on Guinea Pigs.

I have to say, I don't know anything about the IU "police". But my father (retired Colonel, USMC) was director of security at Southwestern at Memphis, now Rhodes College, for 10 years. He'd have hunted these b**tards down and made their dorm life miserable for as long as they were in school. Not because he's fond of guinea pigs but there are some lines you just don't cross, especially not on his watch.
Hope the idiots get the max that can be thrown at them.

There was a picture, but this is a NON [quoted text clipped - 62 lines] > > Jill IU police have very little, if any, powers off campus. The only power they would have would be if a crime started on IU property (say like a car chase, and IU police *do* have their own cars, etc, just like regular police, but they report ot IU, not to the citizens that pay their taxes) and continued elsewhere. If you park "illegally" on campus, and are *not* a student, and get a parking ticket from the IU police, they cannot make you pay it. If you were a student, and didn't pay it, IU would withold your diploma (or it's equivalent) until it is paid.

I don't know about their authority there. But, as I mentioned, my father (as director of the campus "police") would have made sure their in dorm lives were miserable for pulling such a stunt.

Family dog back on all fours after VIP treatment Family's Christmas saved by donations from strangers Thursday, December 16, 2004 Posted: 5:48 PM EST (2248 GMT)
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (AP) -- Around this time last year, Josie the dog had a broken back, a dislocated hip and internal injuries. A veterinarian suggested putting her to sleep. Instead, the Twedt family decided to skip Christmas presents and use the money to pay Josie's medical bills.
But an outpouring of gifts from around the world soon followed, enabling the Twedt kids to get Christmas presents and Josie to receive multiple operations, twice-a-day whirlpool therapy, and convalescence in a private room with a TV tuned to the Animal Planet channel.
"She's a four-legged pooch again," said Stella Twedt of North Mankato.
Josie, an Australian cattle dog, was hit by a truck near the Twedt home December 5, 2003. Her operations eventually surpassed $7,000. So Doug and Stella Twedt and Stella's three children decided to go without Christmas gifts.
When their story got out, hundreds of pet lovers from Los Angeles to Jamaica to Britain sent the Twedts money, Christmas gifts, cards, pictures of their pets and -- of course -- dog treats for Josie. They sent more than $10,000 and hundreds of gifts.
"We went from trying to explain to a 6-year-old that Santa's going to be lighter this year because a truck ran over her puppy dog to being completely overwhelmed," Doug Twedt said.
Josie recovered in comfort for about six weeks at PineRidge Pet Care in Andover, with weekend visits home. After extensive rehabilitation, Josie, now 6 years old, learned to walk again and is mostly back to her normal self.
Stella Twedt said she could not live without Josie after the dog helped her recover from the stroke she suffered in 2001. The woman, who recently gave birth to a fourth child, got Josie from an animal shelter in 1999 and considers her "my fifth child."
The Twedts said they are keeping this Christmas low-key. The family donated the extra money -- about $1,000 -- to the University of Minnesota for pet owners with severely injured pets and gave dozens of extra toys to charity.
When they finish sending out thank-you notes, they will compile a scrapbook so the kids can remember a year when "the world stopped to take care of their puppy dog," Doug Twedt said.
"It was a powerful lesson in how many wonderful people there are out there," he said.
