In a strange way, thinking of her undergoing much worse surgery on the same day as myself helped me to be more positive, and actually think I was lucky while I was lying on the trolley.

Nothing much to worry about, just eye follow-ups and an X-ray of my shoulder at a different hospital. Remember when I fell down the stairs in September? Hmm, well. I seems I might have broken my scapula as I now have a bony swelling on it which I mentioned last time I was at the docs. You know..like.. Oh..while I'm here could you just have a look at this? I am perfectly aware that I hurt myself quite seriously in that fall. I know that the way I fell backwards from top to bottom could have killed me, easily and I was unable to go to bed, but had to sit up in the armchair as I knew I wouldn't be able to get out of bed. I quite understand why Pat doesn't want to go to hospital from her bump on the head from the bath tub. Firstly, I did not want to spend 8-10 hours in the Emergency Room before being seen, that's the sort of delay we have here. Secondly <blush> I didn't want my few nice clothes I have cut off me that day, and they would have had to, definitely. So I got an x-ray as it's still paining me a lot, and have to wait two weeks for the results. This is my guess as to what will be found.. That I fractured my collar bone. I don't think I could have broken it completely through, like a snap, or I don't think I would have been able to use my arm at all. It might have just dangled then, or would it? Poor Auntie Margaret had only just gone home a day or two before, after staying to look after me and my chickens/cats/geese for almost three weeks. I had to phone her to come right back. I left the front door open so she could get in so I didn't have to get up out of the chair I'd put myself in. When she arrived I asked her not to come anywhere near me or touch me because I wouldn't have been able to bear it. I had more injuries than the collar bone, but the others healed in a few weeks. Yes, I should have gone to hospital but no, I didn't. I had a head injury too. I understand completely why Pat doesn't want to, but I'd like to ask her to post every day for at least a fortnight so we all know you're okay.
((hugs for your poor head, Pat))

I don't think fractured collar bones cause arms to dangle, but you could well have a partial break from your description of the fall. Again, like broken toes, not a lot they can do for them by way of splinting, AFAIK.

I know from my experience riding horses, that there isn't much that can be done for a broken collar bone. I never got that break through falling off a horse ( which I did pretty often when I was breaking my 2 year old filly in) but I know people who did.
But let me tell you that it's very painful and a nuisance. I like to sleep on my left side. I now can't because of this injury, it hurts too much even after ten weeks or so. It hurts me to sniff or cough, it seems to go straight to the scapula and hurt.
I will get the results of the x-ray in about ten days now. If they say it's healed incorrectly and it would be best if we broke it again and it healed better, guess what you think I'll say.
New competition. What will Tweed say if the hospital advise to break her shoulder again?? No holds barred ;-)

:-(( All I can say is that the muscles are so very complicated around the shoulder area (I've illustrated them enough times, I should know) that if something is out of kilter I guess it will cause all kinds of other problems like the ones you describe. Also nothing worse than not being able to sleep properly for weeks on end.... I can only imagine how uncomfortable that must be for you. :-(

>I imagine it will be > very tiring to start with, getting back into the swing of things and > still looking after the cats, chickens etc. Yes, I'm sure it will. I have fallen into the trap that a lot do, staying up ridiculously late and not being able to get up at a reasonable time. There have been a few times when I'm still up at 6 a.m. I have to stop doing this, and get myself into a pattern of going to bed no later than midnight. I'll have to be up before 7 soon.
> I hope you can still post at > least once a day though. I'll try. Can't promise after January. I'll do my best. Hey, I couldn't completely stop posting, I love you all too much now. ;-) I will keep in touch as much as I can. Already I have less time. Meetings at work almost weekly about my return and how it will be facilitated. Visits from "societies who help people with visual impairment" at my workplace, 11 miles away and I have to be there. Next time Monday p.m, to show me a temporary thingie that I am being lent until the state of the art "MyReader" arrives from New Zealand.
The Social Security place is on my case too. Wow, they give me 60 quid a week to live on, Incapacity Benefit. They now seem to believe I'm getting an Occupational Pension. They said that the Inland Revenue told them I was getting one.
One day I will get an Occupational Pension. That day will be when I retire, which is a way away yet. 2013.
Pam, I understand what you're going through with Rob's claim.
They even phoned me up two nights ago to tell me they wanted me to see one of their doctors about why I couldn't work.
<flash of temper> which I controlled. I explained exactly what had happened to me in the last twelve months, that I had a job to go back to and we were awaiting adaptations and stuff so that I could go back to my job soon.
"We'll talk to you after Christmas, then."
I'm afraid I had to put the receiver down. Rant, so 60 odd quid a week pays my bills and groceries, eh? Of course not.
Did I ask for this eye problem to happen to me? No.
Can I help it if I have to be very careful afterwards for quite a while that everything is healed so I can resume work? No.
Do I want to put my sight at risk through going back to work too soon and having to lift things which might cause my much operated upon retina to detach? No.
Although I feel a certain responsibility towards my employers to run the department that I am supposed to, that responsibility does not come anywhere near risking a threat to my fragile sight.
I only have two eyes, and one isn't much good. They could easily employ someone with two good eyes if necessary. It's nice that they're keeping my job open and giving me the help I need to continue it. However, they *have* to do this by law. It isn't because they love me ;-) Which they might, and I think they do actually. But they are obliged by law to assist an employee who becomes disabled in service, back to work.
Do you all realise what effect my absence from 8-4 will mean to my poor boy and girl? I don't intend to keep the back door open any more so they can go in and out since my neighbour had 10 chickens stolen a few days ago. It was *not" a fox. Foxes don't take a heavy paving slab off the roof and leave the roof propped up neatly at the side and a stick inside the run where they drove the chickens into the bedroom part.
Is quite rural here and we thought it was safe for years. Now it isn't.
I shall have to lock up, and the cats will have to spend the day in the conservatory with it's open door so they can get in and out to two beds that are in there so I can lock and bolt the back door.
They both have big winter coats because they are out a lot. I'm sure they'll be fine. But it's not the same as being able to come in to a warm(ish) house for the last year as soon as a little miaouw is heard at the door, is it? Can't spell the cat sound. Meow or what?

Neck, yes., very painful, like whiplash. Shoulder/scapula is the worst. I'm sure I'll be fine in a few weeks. I managed for nearly 20 years in this house without a stair rail. Then I got one. Then I fell down the stairs.. Huh. Typical. Just my luck.
