job-related purr request

John F. Eldredge - 16 Dec 2004 01:00 GMT
Since February, I have been working just part-time, and at a reduced
pay rate, and therefore have been looking for a new full-time job.  I
had a job interview today that sounded like I will probably be
offered the position, although they said that they had a few more
candidates to interview.  This new job will be in my field
(programming), will pay more than I was making before I had to go
part-time, and will have full benefits, including health insurance
(my current job doesn't include health insurance).

They always tell you that they have a few more candidates to
interview, when they like you. :)  Really, it shows that they find you
qualified enough that they want you in the loop.  Purrs that you get
the job.

Just how many of us programmers are there on this NG? And it seems like
all of us are either sadly underemployed or unemployed.

Anyhow, our best job purrs are coming your way.

By proxy, anyway [DH is a programmer/tech].

I'm not a programmer (by choice); at my last company I did software support
for 11 years and QA testing in the last 4 of those years.  It always
surprises me to hear someone say "Oh! You'll find a job in no time in the
I.T. industry!"  Really?  Tried it lately? (I say to the sales clerk.)

I did software QA for a few years, in the defense sector. Back then
MIL-S-52779 was the spec we tested to. I suppose that spec is dead and
buried by now.

I don't know about that spec - it all depends on what you're testing.  This
software was proprietary, written by and used only by employees of the
company (third party claims administrator) for the handling of workers comp,
liability and disability claims.  We sort of developed our own specs for
testing and because I knew the software inside and out I was able to do
manual regression testing to make sure a change in one area didn't "break"
something in another module.  I apparently boxed myself in now that I don't
work there anymore and am not up on Winload and Loadrunner. (sigh)

I'm not in IT, but my least favourite comment (and one woman made it
twice) was something like 'It must be great to be on EI (unemployment
payments) and have all that free time...'. She can't have known either
the amount you get or the time limit before it runs out.

I'm working again; only a short-term contract, and at a really big pay
cut, but I like it, and it keeps the leaky roof over our head and food on
the table. I still get annoyed at the inaccuracy of that vision of Life
Among the Unemployed!

Purrs for all those still job hunting. Really, I can't remember when I
knew and heard of so many people who needed work! Especially people who
have been in the workforce a while, not youngsters trying to break into a
field.

Obviously not.  People like that should try cutting their monthly income by
2/3rds and try to enjoy all that "free time" (about 6 months).

I'm glad you like it!  That's a plus :)

That's the biggest problem with being re-hired, I think.  It's much easier
to hire a "youngster" right out of college or even still attending college.
They are thrilled to be making more than minimum wage and either still live
with their parent(s) or have a couple of roommates to share expenses.

Now I am requesting a job-related purr request:  My son's company told
them they are closing the local department on Christmas Eve -- what a
Christmas present!  He was in charge of this branch, so he and a dozen of
his co-workers are literally out in the snow .  Purrs , if you will, for
my son and his department workers.  Yes, it is in the software field.  MLB

Thanks for your purrs.  I recently read that company  paid a departure
bonus of over a million and a half to one person.  I Dont know whether it
was retirement or a forced out payment.

What a rotten trick.  I suppose it was better than waiting till after

Unfortunately it's not unusual to be laid off at Christmas - I was laid off
last year right before Christmas.  It's the end-of-year accounting thing,
and not budgeting for another salary in the new year.

Sending heavy-duty purrs that he finds *better* something very soon.

I've been mulling through my memory of sayings to help my low spirits.
This is the only one I can think of at this time.  It goes something like
this (not sure it is accurate) though  ---

"When trouble came and skies grew gray,
This, we thought is here to stay.
But trouble in time went on its way
And then we found we wore  an armor we had not known before."

I'm going to look this one up again -- something is missing.

Thanks for your purrs.   MLB

Purrs that you secure the job you want.  Times have certainly changed from
"the good old days"  -- I guess they were really a lot better than we
thought.  I retired a long time ago from a job I had for 33 years.  Before
that I had changed jobs a few times to better my position but never "lost"
a job.  I really wish those days would come back to the job market.  Now
it seems the companies don't care about those who do their work  The big
guys want it all -- for themselves.  I guess this is classified as a rant.

Purrs for all the furkids and their slaves.   MLB
