Instead of working I've been doing something much more constructive,
ruminating on the varied and complex inter-personal relations involved
in being a 1-human 3-cat family.
2 cats that were cosily cuddled up together one minute will be having a
little spat shortly afterwards. A Cat that was all over me like a rash
might soon be ignoring or avoiding me. And so forth. You'll nearly all
know what I mean.
So when things are a little tense, no matter which of us is involved, I
make it my pleasurable duty to bring out the multi-spined (I call it the
Hedgehog) grooming brush. Snowball, on whom it can hardly reach down
through his luxuriant winter coat to touch his skin, adores this object
and will come trotting up as soon as he spots it, or if he hears it
being used on another will muscle his now considerable bulk in between
said other and the brush to insist it's immediately used on him.
Bandit, whose short hair is impeccably groomed by himself and who never
needs brushing, nonetheless enjoys the attention and both he and
Snowball will be purring and rolling over rubbing themselves into the
carpet within moments.
Even Pericles, who when younger disliked the brush nearly as much as the
dreaded Comb (his underfur mats easily next to his skin and is both
difficult and painful to declog), has after some years of trying come
round to the sensual pleasures involved in brushing - except near the
scene of the Big Snip - and leans into the strokes to gain more benefit.
There's no risk of counter-attack even when their vulnerable tummies get
treated as they perform "upside-downy-head".
So all bad tempers are banished by judicious wielding of the Brush. It
even relaxes me to be giving the boys so much enjoyment.
I wondered if anyone else was using it as a soothing tool, and how their
own little darlings react.
Purrs to all.
Gordon and the Terrible Trio.
PS As everyone's so mellow these days, even Hoolikitten, I think I shall
have to rename them. The Mellow Fellows, perhaps?

Hi! Newby here. My 2 girls don't like to be brushed. :o( So all summer
I live in air that is full of flying cat hair. I can't clip their
nails, either. I'm a mess of a mom, but they love me anyway. :o)

Welcome to rpca! A better bunch of cat loving people you couldn't hope to
find!
My Persia (grey cat with green eyes) adores being brushed. She's a
sweetheart of a kitty and will climb up in my lap the moment I get out the
brush and start purring and rubbing on it. She was front-declawed before
she came to me and I've never tried to clip her back claws... she lets me
know in no uncertain terms when I can and cannot touch her paws! Usually I
can only touch them when she's very sleepy, and after a minute she'll
"untouch" them and touch mine instead :)

I second Jill's welcome, Katz. =o) We're a friendly bunch distributing
far more purrs and headbutts than growls and hisses. =o)
Pan likes being brushed with the little rubber kitty-curry comb, but he
won't stay still. He constantly turns so he can rub his cheeks on the
brush. Francesca rather likes the slicker brush, lightly applied. But
then, she's younger, more supple and erm.... has more physical padding.
(Okay, she's turning into a brown tabby beach ball although I have
decreased the amount of food she gets and don't leave food available at
all times.)
Nina just plain loves attention, but she has a very short attention
span. I can do maybe three passes with the brush and then she's off to
her next thing. But her coat is so adorably soft that it's impossible
to resist stroking her. =o)

Thanks, all, for the welcome. Where would we be without our furkids?
Life would indeed be bleak.

Hello Katz, and mrrp to Daisy and Moxie
Shmogg, aka B*st*rd C*t. will not allow anyone to brush him at any time.
Ever. Full stop. You can try, as long as you have suitable armour and a
death wish, but he *will* reap revenge whether its an immediate bite and
claw, or a slow drawn out battle of ever escalating b*st*rd c*t tricks. A
mere mortal cannot with Shmogg's Dignity - and what a big Dignity it is -
without suffering the consequences.
And I love the psychopath anyway.

Oh Boy! Someone new to share things with! There's always a welcome
waiting for someone who loves cats and likes to share stories about
them.
Regards and Purrs,
