Might have gotten a bite on a job for QA Testing. I usually disregard
emails which result from my posting my resume. But I checked out the web
site after reading the local job info he sent me; looks like a stable
placement company. I called and left him a message and also emailed a
reply.
The guy called me back within 30 minutes. He had to go meet a client
(laughing - it's lunchtime in U.S. Eastern time so either he's lunching with
the client or he just wanted to eat lunch!). He's going to call me back at
1:30 Central time to discuss the position. No fees on my end; the client
pays all placement fees.
I'm *not* getting my hopes up. I've had so little luck with anything, even
jobs in shops. But I sure could use some purrs!

I really, really hope you get the job! The software QA market right
now is good, I think. I have a friend who is in manufacturing QA, and
he can't find work, but the people I know who are in software QA are
getting offers left and right. I think there is a lot of room there
for advancement too, if you happen to pick up formal SQA processes.

We had a "phone interview"... I dunno. I've learned not to get my hopes up.
He had several other candidates to talk with and then talk to his client to
see who he might want to meet with.
Unfortunately, working 11 years for the same company I seem to have boxed
myself into a corner. I don't have the experience with various testing
software most companies are looking for. I do have excellent testing and
documentation skills and learn new software with ease but at my salary
level... they'd rather hire someone right out of college if they have to
train them. The man didn't say this but I KNOW - been there done that.
John, my long lost, hopes I don't have to find a job at all. But he's right
out of the hospital (the surgery for diverticulitis is more troublesome than
his heart bypass surgery last winter!) and we won't be working together for
a while. I have to keep my kitty and bird and myself fed and housed. And I
hate to ask him for anything. It's starting to get scary.

I hope it doesn't get too scary, Jill! I think you would be a good
tester. They need very critical, fault-finding personalities. :) The
good ones look for people who can buck the system a little.

I'm not sure but I think there was a compliment buried in this reply ;)

Sorry, maybe that didn't come out that good. :) I definitely meant it
only in a good way. I think a QA tester would be perfect for you.
It's fun because they get to go bug other people instead of the other
way around, like with tech support.

Having been there/done that, we'll be sending our best job purrs!
Over the last few years I've specialized in writing web applications in
Perl and in C where necessary (been programming in C since the 70s, in
Perl since the mid-90s). Now all the domestic jobs doing that are
getting farmed out to overseas outfits. That's why I'm now driving a truck.
But there ARE good jobs still out there. We'll send our absolute best
purrs that this is one of them, and that they figure out that they need you.

Tell me about it! It's impossible to get a job as a web architect when
there's people in China who will do it for a dollar an hour! I'm still
working as an Executive Assistant (and doing their web site in ASP "on the
side" - yeah right!!).
