It was a 7 cat nigth

We had our first "hard" freeze of the season last night. We had the
electric blanket on and all 7 cats in bed. Basho started under the
covers, as usual, but I think it got too warm for him under there. When
I woke up, he was in a pile with Rufous and Issa between my legs. To my
left there was another pile: Maya, Luna and Fez. Xoxo was to the left of
Tom, where he usually sleeps.
How many cats did you have in bed last night?

You're lucky! It's rare for us to have any cats in bed. DH says I kick too much
and they avoid me. :-(

When we moved into our current apartment, Felix insisted on sleeping
with us, but lately prefers the sofa.

I only have the one, but she snuggled *close*.  It got down to 18F here
which is pretty darned cold for Memphis.

Reminds me of a funny but OT story.  Forgive me if I've told this before.
Back in the 1980's my middle brother and I were roommates renting a house.
He'd gotten a smoker (grill) and was determined to smoke the Thanksgiving
turkey.  He was out partying (heavily) until about 3AM.  Meanwhile, we had
the coldest temps on record that night for that time of year - it was about
13F.  He got up at 6AM to start the turkey.  In reality, it should have only
taken about 5 hours to slow smoke a 12 lb. turkey.  He lit the coals, added
the soaked hickory chips, put water, wine, onion garlic and herbs in the
water pan.  Thought he could go back to bed.  Nope.  It was so cold the
coals wouldn't stay lit.  He had to stay up and tend that fire; he felt like
crap.  I said look, let's just roast it in the oven.  Nope, stubborn.  So I
laughed my a** off as he miserably tended the smoker all day long.  The
turkey was finally done around 4PM.  It's a good thing we weren't having
company.

Last night heralded the start of the official Christmas season.

Shmogg amused himself last night by torturing the first of the Christmas
beetles that manage to work their way through the fly screens.

Tish should be able to tell you what a Christmas Beetle actually is in
scientific terms, but its a flying brown beetle that often has an
irridescence, they come out at night and are attracted to light. The start
of the Christmas Season is heralded by the sounds of of them committing
hare-kari as they fly full-speed into the solid surfaces around artificial
light sources, and each morning, the crunch of their caracasses as you have
to walk through masses of their dead bodies that have collected under the
street lights.

They are a type of scarab beetle, IIRC.

They sound like what we call in the Southern US "June Bugs" (Japanese
beetles).  I found one in my bed one night - they have pinchers!  Ouch!

Christmas beetles are a uniquely Australian genus, but are related to
the big shiny chafers that occur elsewhere in the world.  Interesting
that Yowie has got them coming to her outside lights.  I live only
about 70km (umm, 30-ish miles) from her, but have not seen any yet.
Oops, I sit corrected, Dave (DH) says he has seen several coming to
his moth-trapping light lately  :^)

Oliver looks at this a little differently than we do.  He claims it was
a two people night.  Usually he likes to snuggle close to Meowmie but
last night was cold enough he had to tuck his feel under Daddy, too,
even tho Daddy moves around a lot!

For me it was a 3-cat night, Emily on the pillow, Muddy & Mojo anchroing
opposites sides of the quilt. They want to know why I had to move
somewhere that cold in the Winter after five years of basking in S.

thank you very much for the nice compliment:-) My DH made the picture while
I was asleep:-) When I wake up in the morning, only Chiara and Lady
Mortisha (the 2 cats left of me) are there, the others are gone. I actually
change positions several times a night:-)

I'll bet your crew loves that! Then again, I've always heard that Persians
are very mellow cats, and they take what comes. Do your cats simply go with
the flow when you turn over, or do they stomp off in a huff?

I don't know, if the gang likes me to change positions:-) The only thing I
know is, that they don't stomp off in a huff. I'm sure about this, because
I never wake up from them:-)) Our Persians are very mellow cats, indeed.
They love each other and they love us. The only thing, they don't like, are
changes in their daily rhythm.

Good to see you Inge.  With their thick coats, I wouldn't want to be
in that position during the summer, but it would be lovely in winter.

I can tell that all these cats have been well socialized from birth.

Although I don't post much here, you remembered me:-)) To be honest, in
summer, they are only half the cats they are now:-) They developed a
beautiful wintercoat. I have to admit, in summer, they are still pretty
warm *g*.

You remember that too:-))) Yes, they were born here and because Chiara had
not enough milk, we handraised them. The plan was to find new homes for
them, but after their first vaccination (?) they all were very ill and we
didn't want to give away ill cats. When they were ok again, they all had
developed their very own characters and we couldn't imagine to give away
one of them:-) We never regretted our decision:-))

All together we have 11 cats, but only the ones on the picture like to
sleep in bed, the others like to stay around the bed. The cats on the
picture are: the white cat on the left of me is Chiara, mom of the other
cats. The silvertabby next to Chiara is her daughter, Lady Mortisha. On my
chest, there is Owl. To the right of me at the top of the bed is Rasputin.
The one below Rasputin is Bandit and half under Bandit is Cottonball, who
likes to put his head under my shoulder *g*. The remaining 5 cats are:
Tientje, She, Dax, Smoke and Sirikit. Tientje and She are European
Shorthair, the rest are persians with noses:-)

purr me into a coma and make me not having a will of my own. When they

Well, they are very clever, they only come _that_ close when I'm sound
asleep:-)) I even wake up in the winter, because I'm sweating, but when I
wake up, no cat is on me so I accused the waterbed to be installed to hot

Victor, I can't even imagine all eight of ours in bed at once!  lol!

I think at one point we had our usual three (Internet, Brando and
Arthur).  I know Brando curled up beside me for awhile, and I awoke
with Arthur happily cuddled behind my knee with his paws on top.  I
suspect the others were sleeping in, under, or around the waterbed,
though.

None, so I guess I can set the thermostat a little lower.  Molly doesn't
particularly like sharing the bed with the dog, and Jake feels like he has
to keep an eye on Molly, so they haven't been sleeping on the bed as often
as they used to.

It's always a three-cat night around here.  Pan has been playing the
pity/guilt card for all it is worth, and insists on spending at least
part of the night under the covers and on top of ME. Then when he gets
too warm, he leaves and goes to sleep on my spare pillow.  But... he's
likely to make several trips back and forth during the night, depending
on his thermal state.  He has no qualms about climbing out over my face
if I happen to be in his way.

Francesca and Nina curl up together at the foot of the bed to my right,
but if it's a chillier night than usual, they nestle between my legs.
Nina also likes to burrow under the covers, but only to pounce on
Meowmie's feet, not to sleep.  Cesca is not a fan of being under the
covers, although she did used to like it before Nina arrived.

Cheryl Perkins - 16 Dec 2004 12:56 GMT
>> How many cats did you have in bed last night?

I have two, but rarely all night. Mandy used to sleep on my chest, but got
fed up with me because I kept turning on my side, and, as she got bigger,
started waking up flailing around from nightmares of being suffocated.
That couldn't have had anything to do with an increasingly large cat
snuggling up against my mouth and nose, now, could it?

So now, they wait until the light goes off, sometimes meowing impatiently
if I don't go to bed at the proper time (bossy creatures). Then they
settle down on top of me if I'm on my side (always tail to my face, for
some reason) along my legs (face in the right directions) or sometimes
near my head. They never willingly go under the covers, and they come and
go during the night probably doing things like making sure the cat food
dish is empty in the morning so they can complain of starvation and
neglect. But there's always one, often two with me. I miss them if I'm
travelling.

I miss the little booger like crazy when I go away.

So does Frank. I think he wants the hoomin heating pad in place before
he goes to sleep properly (of course, he naps on the bed alone all day,
so I don't see why he needs me there at night).

Temperatures are lower at night, so he needs the extra warmth. :-)

It was a 9 cat and 1 d*g night here last night - it got down to about 12
degrees F, just a nice, brisk night. <G> When I woke up this morning, I was
lying on my back and tried to move. No go. My siamese mix Amanda, was laying
on my head, Sasquatch (maine coon mix) was on my chest. Widu, (mackeral
tabby short hair) was cuddled up under my left arm, Kieri and Tobi (black
short hair) were to my right, Cougar (mackeral tabby male) was on top of my
knees, Boyce and Ian were bracketing my legs, and Bear was cuddled up with
his dog, Jasper. It was very interesting trying to get out of bed!

Your cat has his own dog? :-)

My advice is to just give up and hibernate this winter. =o) ALthough I
suppose you'd have to get up to feed and clean the kitty boxes, now and
then.

And I thought *I* was a heated, padded food dispenser!
