I would so much appreciate if you could keep my friend's lovable black cat,
Dexter, in your thoughts and purrayers as he's going in for needle biopsies
today -- they suspect lymphoma :o(. His lymph nodes are very swollen in
several locations.

My friend, Kristin, is worried sick about her sweet black lover-boy kitty;
she's got to work this a.m. (she's an OR nurse) so I'm taking him in for his
procedure.  Dexter is one of the sweetest cats I've ever known.

Kristin asked me to ask ya'll what experiences, if any, ya'll have had with
lymphoma.

Thank you.

I don't have experience with cats who have or may have lymphoma.  However,
my father, who is 80 years old, is a lymphoma survivor of 2 years.  From
what I've read, lymphoma is one of the more insidious cancers in terms of
spreading rapidly and failing to react positively to surgery and subsquent
radiation and/or chemotherapy.  My father is one of the lucky ones; no
recurrences.

If they catch Dexter's condition (assuming it's lymphoma and not just an
infection causing lymph node swelling) early enough, I pray the same thing
will be the case for Dexter.  Purrs for your friend and for Dexter.

Purrs and gentle headbutts on the way for Dexter and Kristin. I don't
have any experience with lymphoma, however, I do have experience with
lymph nodes.  About 4 years ago Hobbes developed a couple of lumps on
his neck and they grew to marble sized lumps.  I took him in and of
course one consideration was lymphoma.  A biopsy was performed and the
results were erythematous granulomatosis - basically a collection of
inflammatory cells causing a swelling near his lymph nodes.  Treatment
could have been steroids however because of his size (his overweight
status) the vet decided we'd just watch it and make sure it didn't get
worse.  Eventually the swelling decreased and while he still  has some
lumps in the area they are very small and don't cause any trouble.

We'll send purrs that Dexter's problems are as easily treatable.

No experience with lymphoma, I just want to send sympathy, purrs, and
healthy wishes for Dexter (the name even sounds sweet, until one thinks
about the cartoon "Dexter's Laboratory) and purrs, hugs, and sympathy
for his worried meowmy.

Again, my experience is with humans. We generally divide lymphoma into
Hodgkins' [Disease] type and non-Hodgkins lymphomas.

Human therapy for Hodgkin's Disease is to the point where there is a
true cure rate -- not remission or reduction -- of, IIRC, 70% or so.
It's still not a minor disease

In non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the prognosis is worse. While there have been
some recent breakthroughs [1], the disease tends to be characterized by
some number of remissions through treatment, but with increasing
relapses until treatment is ineffective.

[1] monoclonal antibodies, both radioactive and not, processed to
remove some of the side effects. Probably very expensive.

Many purrs for sweet Dexter.
Sorry, I have no experience to offer about lyphoma in cats, only in dogs.

Poor little man, purrs that it's just a low-grade infection of his
lymph nodes.  If it turns out to be more serious, we'll be purring our
loudest for both of them.

Purrs for Dexter and your friend. Shadow had a needle biopsy as
part of his diagnosis when he had hepatic lipidosis, and it was
fairly non-evasive. They use a very fine needle and don't even have
to make an insision. The thing they told me to watch for was black
skin which would indicate internal bleeding, and since they shave,
its easy to tell.  I took pics of Shadow's belly after it was done
for something to compare it to, because his skin was mottled
black/white any way, and it would have been easy to panic. Best
wishes it isn't anything serious!

Hi everyone,
Many thanks for the purrs and good wishes for Dexter and for Kristin.  The
vet apparently decided to remove one of the the lymph nodes for the biopsy
so Dexter does have an incision now.  I am going to pass on all of your kind
messages to my friend; I hope it will help her to know how many people are
thinking of her and Dexter.
Many thanks -- I will post an update when we hear back.

Many purrs and prayers for the little sweetheart and his mama! I have no
experience with lymphoma, but Dexter may be a tough little fella and surprise us
all.

Blessed be,

Poor Dexter and Kristin! =o(  I hope it's not as bad as they fear,
Lymphoma is nasty. I'll put Panther, Francesca and Nina on the case as
soon as possible.
