...of all the tuition I've ever paid for so-called "education."  All of
my many years in school have not given me the ability to make it stop
raining, and Pippin is disgusted with me.  Everytime I opened the back
door for him, it was raining. Even after he waited a whole minute
between demands for door service!

Not only that, but the squirrels have outsmarted me. Me, with the brain
the size of a planet.;-)  They've figured out how to get the roof off of
the bird feeder and now sit INSIDE of it to munch away.

*sigh* what's the use in studying now? wonder what's on TV...

My brother says when he put in a "squirrel-proof" bird feeder, the
squirrels "looked at it, and whipped out their tiny slide rules" . . .

You must have old fashioned squirrels there, ours use PDAs. ;-)

At least yours stays inside when it's raining - about half of mine
don't: some of them go out, dance around in the muddiest puddle they
can find, then quickly - before the water can drain off - run back
inside and jump on my lap, or if I'm in bed, on the bed, and prance
around leaving muddy foot prints everywhere.  Then they repeat the
whole process a little while later.  It's been raining several days
each week for two months.

My commiserations. Nikki does that out on the island when it rains. She
comes in, soaked, in the middle of the night, gets into bed, dries
herself off on the sheets, then happily runs out in the rain again.
Purring the whole time.

Shortly after I posted that message it started raining - officially
"winter mix".  Not much, and intermittent, but Mudpie discovered it
almost immediately, then Maryweather, then others.  It quit for
several hours, then started again, and the second shift went to work:
Snowball, Fleagor, Mudpie again - and his brother Avery ... it's still
going on.

At least Fluffy, Spooky, and Tigger - the main bed cats - aren't
likely to go out in it.

Nikki is just as disgusted with me for not making the balcony warm and
sunny in the middle of December in Finland.

After many years of education, training and work experience, my parents put
it all to use when they built a house in Western North Carolina.  With a
deck running the length of the house and a copy of Birds of North America,
they put up feeders along the deck as well as in the yard.  They they spent
the next several years at war with the squirrels who dined at the feeders.
(The squirrel nests in their trees might have given them a clue.)

They finally found the perfect feeder.  It would snap shut whenever the
weight of a squirrel was detected.

They then proceeded to start buying food for the squirrels too.
