So sleepy, he forgets to be scared

jXwXeXrXmXoXnXt@sonic.net - 08 Dec 2004 11:48 GMT I often wake up with Licorice in a deep slumber on my bed. When this happens, I sometimes pet him a bit, and he'll started purring loudly. Often he'll roll over on his back, and sometimes he'll allow his two front legs to just drop back, all relaxed. When he's like that, I like to give him little massages - I'll massage the tissue connecting his front legs to his shoulders, and then I massage his sweet little rib cage (cats' rib cages are so tiny and narrow - so they can squeeze through small spaces). All the while, he's purring up a storm. (Today, that earned him a dirty look from Smudge, who was also lying on the bed.)
I just love it when he's all sleepy like that - he's totally relaxed. And he's always been like that, even when he was a 3-month old foster kitten, and never, ever let me near him when he was awake. When he's asleep (or half-asleep), it's like he doesn't remember that he's supposed to be afraid, and he revels in being petted!
(Roxy, on the other hand, does *not* want to be disturbed when she's asleep. When I can't help myself and I just *have* to pet her sleeping form, the tip of her tail will start to twitch, and then she'll get up and very pointedly move 3 inches over to a new spot and settle down again - at which time I'll finally take the hint and leave her alone!)

Aww, your Licky boy is so sweet! Nikki used to be like Roxy, but these days she has mellowed out a lot and even sleeps in my lap on occasion. She has changed a lot from the half-feral stable kitten she was when I got her.

Roxy actually does sleep on me - on the side of my hips when I'm lying sideways on the sofa, and sometimes on my chest, and even on my upper back, if I'm sleeping on my stomach (she'll sometimes rest her chin on my shoulder and purr in my ear). And of course, she sleeps in my arms when I'm at the computer, as all the cats like to do.
But if she's sleeping on the bed, or the back of the couch - one of *her* spots, that's when she doesn't want to be bothered. Roxy seems to have certain places in the house associated with being petted, and those are the only places it's permitted! :) But sometimes, when I pet her in one of the "wrong" places, instead of getting annoyed, she'll get up and go over to one of the "right" places and roll over into the Cute Kitty (TM) pose (ie, on her side, with her upper body turned slightly upward, and her front paws curled fetchingly), ready to be petted.

Nikki goes into a box or her tent if she doesn't want her sleep to be interrupted by annoying petting hands. I think I've mentioned before that Frank has one chair where my lap will do for him. If I sit anywhere else, he won't come into my lap volontarily, but if I'm in that special chair, he will.

Jean Hobbs - 18 Jan 2005 08:52 GMT Wilson was the same not liking to sleep too near me,moving down and twitching his tail ,and definately not liking to be near bare legs. Suddenly he's changed after being across my lap for a while, he still moves down the bed but not far, and rests against my bare leg leaving his tail twitching on my thigh, if I stroke his tail he twitches gently but if I stop{ to go to sleep,} he thumps it on the bed, then into my hand, on the bed then into my hand, keeps this up until I grab it and stroke it again, and so on, and so on, I think he's decided that he likes his tail stroking, my bad luck. If I try to pet him anywhere else, like his tummy, he suddenly decides it's Play Time(TM) and starts batting and nipping at my hands.
However, when he's sleeping, I can pet his fuzzy soft kittytummy all I want and he just stretches out wanting more.
Sometimes if I pet him when he's asleep, he'll make a soft "mrrrrp!" sound and stretch.
Cats are the most precious creatures in the universe.

Robin sleeps all out like that. And I can't resist rubbing his belly. He rolls into a more open position and purrs and is still sound asleep. This type of sleep is born of total trust and security.
