Last night was the best night since Nanki-Poo joined our household.
Although there were some minor skirmishes and a lot of name-calling
during the day, all was peaceful when I went to bed.

Lindy was elsewhere when Nanki-Poo decided to come up for a cuddle.  He
purred and snuggled for several minutes, then left before I went to
sleep.  I woke up in the night, and Lindy had come up.  She doesn't
cuddle, but she did come up for some skritches, before settling down
against the backs of my legs.  This morning I woke up, and Lindy was
still against my legs.  Nanki-Poo came up and snuggled for several
minutes.  He and Lindy ignored each other's presence.  A few times I
managed to reach behind me and give Lindy a skritch while skritching
Nanki-Poo with the other hand.  I hope this is real progress.

Sounds like they are coming to gradual terms :)  I'm happy for you!

That is VERY good progress :)

Thanks, Karen.  It seems that way.

Thanks, Jill.  Today they've taken turns trying to intimidate each
other, and apparently succeeding.  Nanki-Poo went out, and when he
wanted to come in, Lindy crouched by the cat door, hissing and growling.
Later Lindy went out, and Nanki immediately went over and stretched out
against the cat door.

Several times I've heard Lindy complaining loudly and found that she is
up on something, and Nanki is sitting on the floor, staring at her.
That seems to drive her crazy.  It's funny, you'd think she'd realize
she has the advantage, since she's above him.  I think that eventually
they'll work it out.  I just hope for more peaceful nights like last
night.

Ah, the joys of refereeing sibling rivalry. :-)

Cats do work these things out eventually [in my family, introductions
consisted of plopping the new arrival right into the course of family
life. Never had any significant injuries from the "sorting things out"
stage, either].

That's what I've always done in the past.  This situation just goes to
prove what I already knew - all cats are not alike.  The same things
don't work with all cats - or all kids, for that matter.  Most likely,
if Nanki-Poo hadn't been sick, it would all be straightened out by now.

I wouldn't dare introduce another cat to Persia.  She's the Queen of this
domain.  She has knocked over my corner plant-stand, broken any number of
potted plants and their pots, crashed through the slider screen door... all
because she simply *saw* another cat on my patio.  She's what they would
call at The House of Mews "Best in a single-cat household". <G>

Felix is a rather determined only cat himself. :-) [He co-exists fine
with Ava, and would probably be all right with a d*g.]

I used to think that about Marley (RB). He was with me as an only cat
for 4 years (he was a year old when he came to live with me) and he
was the same way that Persia is. I took in Shadow without knowing
anything about introducing cats back in '96, and just left them
together. Marley was a lot like Shamrock in that he would chase
Shadow relentlessly. I never even thought it was something to worry
about. Marley was my first cat of my own.

I also think that it depends on the cat that is being introduced.
I've seen Betty interact with other cats through the screen door.
Some of them, she growls at.  I've even seen her lunge at one grey
tabby youngster!  A few, she seems fairly friendly with, or at least
indifferent.

Sounds like it! You've only had him for a short while. It can take a long
time for cats to adjust to each other. Sounds like they're just trying to
figure out what their dynamics are going to be, whether someone's going
to be top cat, or if they're going to end up equals, etc. Meanwhile, you've
had one night of peaceful coexistence, which is wonderful. Sounds like
things are going in the right direction.

That does sound like progress. Hope it continues.
