I've come back from topping up the food supplies for the birds in the back
garden. Loads of seeds, peanuts & grated cheese out there. They *adore* grated
cheese. Get back inside to see three felines lined up on a windowsill watching
all the birds swoop down on the food. Francis is funny as when a jay pops down,
his eyes come out on stalks. Waffles sits there with her tail *lashing* back &
forth, all the while chattering to the birds, telling them how she's going to
bite their heads off & suck their blood... Marble sits with one eye on the
birds and one eye on Waffles, whilst keeping *just* out of range of a certain
velvet-sheathed set of claws belonging to Waffles. Not that he's undermined by
a seriously assertive ladycat in any way...

Cheers, helen s

Who doesn't?  <G>  I've got cheese on my shopping list for tomorrow but it's
for ME, I tell you!

The jays do love peanuts, don't they :)

Persia loves to watch "Cat TV".  She'll be all the more thrilled when I
bring home seed-and corn-filled suet to hang in the basket which will bring
the little (and fast! cheeky birds) Carolina Chickadees
http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/i7360id.html

and the small Downy Woodpeckers
http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i3940id.html

I get these cheeky little wrens (Carolina Wren) on my woodpile in the
winter.  They are distinguished by a long streak which looks like badly
applied white eyeliner :)

http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i7180id.html

I've had a couple of these build nests in the wreath on my front door and
lay eggs.  But something always scares them off.  When I find them doing
this I leave by the back door so as not to disturb them, but I think the
squirrels get to the eggs.

Then there are the tufted titmouses and the juncos; it has to be really cold
here for these cuties to appear on my patio.  All year long I get bright red
cardinals.

Persia has a blast "chirping" at all of them, tail lashing and informing
them what she'd do if she could.

Funny how she ignores my lovebird with all that faux stalking going on :)

Birds, grated cheese? The Yellow Tufted Cheese Sparrow?

Yes, we put our feeder with Cali in mind.

Yep.

Just regular Chickadees here, but not many.

The odd Nothern Flicker.

Mostly House Finches and Purple Finches this time of year.

Raccoons got our Robin's eggs. They had nested on top of the security light.

My favourite bird (Cardinal), also peanut lovers. We get the Dark Eyed
Junkos here.

So adorable.  We have them around here, too, in wooded areas.  When I
go running in the park, I sometimes hear drumming.

We have a surprising number of birds who winter here.  We get blue
jays, nuthatches, lots of juncos, the woodies, and black-capped
chickadees.  And a pair of cardinals, who really make Stinky
wakkawakkawakka. ;)

Speaking of chirping *at* the birds, a wasp got into our enclosed back
porch, was crawling and flitting around one of the windows, just out of cat
reach.  Weebs was 'mrrrrrrrrrrrp'ing, Ernie just does this pathetic
drawn-out whiiiiiiiiiiiiine, but Moe does the 'ac-ac-a-c-ac'.  It was fun
watching the cats watch the bug for a while, but then I got rid of it before
it decided to nest in the hornet nest (it's a *HUGE* thing that was in one
of my MIL's trees, there were no hornets or wasps in it, so we cut the
branch down) that's in a corner of our back porch, near the ceiling.

We also get lotsa squirrels, at least 6 of the orange colored fox squirrels,
which are plentiful in our area, and 2 grey squirrels that are much rarer
and smaller than the foxes.  Not to mention blue jays, cardinals, a few
assorted woodpeckers, finches of all different types, black-capped
chicadees, titmice, and mourning doves (it's leagal here in IN to hunt them,
not that there'd be much to eat after getting blasted).

One time I was watching MamaKat out back, with her kittens, and one was
trying to stalk one of the biggest fox squirrels we have (it was sitting on
the ground underneat one of our bird feeders), & the squirrel turned around
and actually chased the kitten away!

A wasp got in here last summer and was pretty much on its last legs,
crawling on the carpet.  Persia wanted to play with it but I yelled NO! (she
sure understands NO!) because, dying or not, it could still sting her.
Wasps are nasty things; they don't have barbed stingers; they can do it over
and over again, quite painfully.  I scooped it up in some newspaper and
tossed it outside.

I only see grey squirrels here.  John and I spotted a couple of black
squirrels when we were in Iowa walking to breakfast or lunch.  That was
rather unique!

Yeah, they have dove hunting season here, too, although what the point of
that is I don't know.  Besides, I love hearing them coo.  I had one that
returned to my patio for several years.  She had such broad iridescent
markings on her cheeks I named her "Opal".  Someone probably ate her :(

We have lots of parrots, they come to a wattle tree close to our dining room
window where we hang seed "bells"  We have eastern rosellas,  who come just
before sunset, and flocks of rainbow lorikeets  The lorikeets always feed in
pairs,  while the others sit about in the tree waiting their turn. If the
waiting ones get impatient, and get on the seed bell,  a noisy fight ensues.
This is when we go out to gather the occasional feather.  We also have
pigeons and wild ducks who gather underneath the tree to eat the fallen
seeds.

Oh, my you are lucky. Parrots and lorikeets right outside your windows! I can't
even imagine.
