Kira could use some purrs

Marina - 03 Dec 2004 10:40 GMT My niece's cat Kira, who just gave birth to five kittens, has some sort of infection and didn't eat properly Wed-Thur. She and the whole litter saw TED yesterday, and Kira was given a course of antibiotics. She's not producing a lot of milk, and the kittens are not putting on weight as they should. They are alert and active, though. There is especially one that my niece is worried about. She may have to hand-feed it if it doesn't start putting on some weight. Kira had eaten some during the night, so it looks like she is getting better.
Well, I won't be visiting them while there is a problem, so will just have to admire pictures. Kira certainly does not need the stress of strangers coming and handling her babies now. She was very protective of the last litter.

While we're at it, I know another Kira who could also use some purrs. She's a hoomin 13-year-old. She had her first heart transplant when she was two weeks old, and her second a few months ago. Two weeks ago she had a small heart attack, and now she's in the hospital (UCLA Medical Center, actually) being evaluated, as she shows signs of heart failure. She has four brothers, one of whom has just come home after 18 months in a special school for "at risk" teens.

Marina - 05 Dec 2004 16:18 GMT > My niece's cat Kira, who just gave birth to five kittens, has some sort > of infection and didn't eat properly Wed-Thur. She's still not eating properly, but she fights the medication vigorously. They visited the vet again. She had an ultrasound and x-rays, and it seems like she may have some fluid in her uterus, but they didn't want to operate on her at this stage, since that would make her condition even worse. Apparently, she is producing milk and nursing the babies, but they're still not putting on weight as they should. And now she's getting an antibiotic that has to be injected. My niece is *not* looking forward to that. I feel so bad for them all. I really hope Kira and the babies pull through.

Marina - 08 Dec 2004 14:06 GMT Or should I say non-update, because there's nothing new, really, except that Kira visited TED again, and now there was no trace of what looked like fluid in her uterus before. So now they're treating it as some sort of stomach problem, with several different anti-nausea medicines that have to be given at different times. My niece is not happy about this, as Kira is feeling well enough to fight the medication vigorously. Kira is still not eating on her own, and has to be force-fed, which she is also fighting vigorously. The kittens are being hand-fed.

Marina - 09 Dec 2004 16:17 GMT There is some improvement with Kira. She's eaten some treats, and when she is force-fed, she actually licks up the stuff. The kittens are still getting hand-fed. My Mum has been over to help with that. They have to be fed every four hours, so I hear my niece is pretty tired. The kittens' eyes are almost all open already. Apparently, Kira has started moving the kits around. My Mum said that when she visited today, and they were feeding one of the kittens, Kira started moving the other babies from her carrier to her bed (or vice versa). When she had moved two of them, she stopped in the middle of the floor, looked back at the two in the new place, then at the two in the old place, clearly wondering where the fifth kitten was. She looked back and forth a few times, then she noticed the kitten my niece and Mum were feeding, and a lightbulb went on over her head. ;o)
