In the middle of the night, Chester woke up us by suddenly running out
of our bathroom. It sounded weird - like a pair of running shoes was
tied to him - slow and heavy and with a weird thumping sound where you
didn't expect to hear it.
I jumped out of bed but Fred had his earplugs in. I got downstairs to
hear Chester in the basement and some frantic scratching like he was
trying to climb straight up the drywall. I got scared then and ran back
to get Fred, in case I needed a second pair of hands to, at the time I
thought, untangle him. Of course, in that precious minute, he
disappeared into the storage room, which is crammed with things from our
renovation. I spent an hour and a half looking for him to no avail.
The fact that he headed to the storage room meant that he was scared as
that is his safe spot - and there was no way that he was going to give
himself up. I looked in every single nook and cranny and absolutely
could not find his spot. I went back to bed, completely terrified that
he had something wrapped around his foot and circulation was being cut
off. Couldn't sleep at all - just lied there listening for hours.
In the AM, I got up super early and raced downstairs to call him. He
appeared from behind me (mothership teleportation again) and has a
bloody claw but no other obvious physical wounds. He wouldn't come
upstairs for a long time, his ridge was partly up, his pupils dilated,
and he was walking a little funny on his injured paw. After some time,
he came up and had a tiny snack and a few treats. The water is in our
bathroom, where he just won't go, so I put out some water downstairs.
He walked around and sniffed the floor and was brave enough only for the
basement and main floor. Won't go upstairs and is now back in hiding in
the storage room.
What happened? Did some creature (raccoon?) sneak into the house
yesterday afternoon when I was unloading groceries - but the cat food
wasn't touched all night so that doesn't make sense. Did he see a
raccoon in the screen in the bathroom and that was enough to scare him?
- but that doesn't make sense by the sound he made when he ran. Did he
get tangled in something in Jane's room since some things were also
knocked off her dresser? - I'll have to ask her when she's up. Could he
have had a mini stroke and it scared him and he ran like that because
his back legs weren't working?
I'm very worried about him. I'm trying to figure out how I can possibly
catch him and take him to TED, since I'm worried he might have had a
stroke. His eyes are still quite dilated. Or that he got a bite from
some creature that might infect him.

Poor Chester! I'd grab him and vet him by all means-- why can't you get
him? Is he hunkered down in some inaccessible place?

He hides in the storage room and I absolutely can't figure out where.
I'm going to get the crate and put it in the bathroom and go downstairs
with some treats. If he comes out, I can grab him and stuff him in the
crate I hope. I'll get one chance but since he's so scared right now I
think he'll be really hard to handle. If I take the crate to the
downstairs bathroom, he'll hear the telltale sound of the crate and
never come out. If I keep it upstairs, he might not let me hold him
long enough to get him upstairs.
I'll keep you updated as I am late for work with a blistering
non-movable Friday deadline and oncologist appointment with my MIL, who
is doing much worse over the weekend.

Well, can't find him. Just can't. If I spent 1.5 hours last night and
couldn't, not sure that I'll be able to do so now. Hopefully he'll calm
down a little bit today and our nanny and kids will call me if he appears.

Well, good luck finding him, Susan! Either that, or I hope he emerges
unscathed. You may never find out what spooked him, you know. How weird.
Purrs to you, Chester, and your family.

That sounds scary for all concerned. We're sending overall purrs for
things to settle down for all of you, and for Chester to calm down, come
out of hiding, and be in good health.

Quite fond of your boys, I offer this:
only alarming part I find is the continued dilated pupils...question:
when you
see this, is it in the basement, where he emerged from a dark spot and
they
would be dilated from that anyway, or are they dilated in bright
daylight? I
was told by my vet in FL that Sylvie's dilated pupils (never varying
in strong
sunlight even) were total blindness caused probably by blows to her
head,
thus detaching her retinas. Chester might have seen a raccoon trying
to get
in the screen (raccoons are very smart at stuff like that) and got his
claw
stuck in screen, thus ripping it, and then heading for the bedroom
with the
disturbed dresser top. As I have frequently stated I don't have much
of an
imagination....I can't knock Fred for wearing earplugs but it's a good
thing
you don't. I wouldn't dare wear them as the idiots residing on the
"garden
level" apt. (bottom) under mine run an unregistered daycare center and
regularly instigate stove fires bringing my 'burb's "finest" to fight
same at
any and all hours of the night....

Upon further thought....Chester sounds much more excitable than any of
mine;
I doubt the Second Coming of Revilations would even rouse Rowdous,
Moosker,
or Sweetie...could the thumping you heard first possibly have been
Chester
rolling or jumping through the halls? Could it have been him limping
and his
injured claw catching in rugs on his path? If a raccoon was in your
house I
guarantee you the kitchen would be his first stop, especially if food
bowls were
there. Raccoons are not like cats personality-wise and are much bolder
around
hoomins in general; I don't think one would hide out in your basement.

On Friday, when Jebediah was afraid (after the incident with Smeagol),
his eyes remained dilated nearly all day, even when he ran outside
briefly. They are back to normal now, were the day after the 'fight',
but it did freak me out that he looked so scared.

Purrs for you and Chester. I hope you'll be able to get him to the vet
soon, and that he'll be okay.

Poor guy, something obviously freaked him out. What a weird mystery. I
sure hope he's OK, and that you can catch him soon to get him checked out!

Gosh, Susan I hope he's okay. Please let us know.
Maybe he just got his claw hung on something and that freaked him out,
maybe it's
still hurting some and that's why he's hiding. Injured cats do hide.
Don't their pupils normally dilate in a darkened room normally? I'm
also thinking a brain event would only affect one pupil.
Purrs that Chester just had a minor mishap and is just being a drama
king. I sure
hope so.

Since he did cut his foot couldn't the same you heard have been something
caught on or around (tangled as you say) his foot? Something with a thin
cord or string or like that? He worked at it and pulled it off but only by
inflicting some damage. I would carefully inspect every place you can tell
he was for blood or a broken or removed something or other.

What a mystery! Lots of purrs on the way that whatever happened does not
have any serious consequences - not that the bloody claw isn't serious
in itself. I hope you can get him to the vet.
