OT Firefox

I have just downloaded Firefox as I seem to have a lot of trouble with
my old browser Netscape 4.7  A lot of pages refuse to come up.   I have
Netscape 7.1 but dislike its interface.   I know that a few people here
use Firefox and was wondering whether it has mail and newsgroups or is
just a browser i.e. Internet Explorer has Outlook Express?

I beleive Firefox is just a browser, the email/news client companion is
Thunderbird.

I *think* you're looking for Thunderbird:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

(I don't use it, but if I used GUI interfaces for mail and news, that's what
I'd use!)

It took me a while to get used to GUI clients instead of my good old
pine and rn.

In my case, mutt and slrn.  I use them because I can log in to any machine in
the world, jump onto my home machine, and have these running just as they were
thanks to 'screen'.  Doing that with GUIs is possible, but requires more
infrastructure and is much laggier.

I *still* use a Unix shell! I use tin (for usenet) and mutt for email.

I do have Eudora on hand if I need to download an attachment, but most
of the time, mutt does the job.

Unix shell email is virus-proof!! I'll keep using it until nobody in
the universe supports it any more.

slrn and mutt, here.  My .muttrc goes on and on and on ...

Well, I actually run my own mail server, and I just copy files wherever from
mutt ... of course I have share access to the linux boxen from windows =)

Not a risk, I don't think.  There are plenty of folks who think like us.
Besides, while it's not an inherent gui vs. console thing, it sure seems to me
that most console apps are made with far more comprehensive options than are
GUI apps.  The flexibility of mutt is almost unbelievable, and I have slrn
configured, among other things, to set different sigs for different
newsgroups.

I'll be impressed when a GUI can handle things like the command to "display
only the messages received in the last 5 days", which mutt can do easily, and
without forcing me to take my hands off the keyboard.

That's my big gripe with GUIs, the need to be on and off the keyboard
[I'm a touch typist].

Mozilla thunderbird can do that. Knowing the hotkeys allow you to turn
it on or off, change to a different view function, or customize it
without removing your hands from the keyboard.

I still use pine and tin for most things. At work, I use OE, and
sometimes, very rarely, only if I can't reach tin, use Mozilla for
newsgroups. I much prefer to read newsgroups using straight text. It's
much faster than the alternatives.

It is. At work we have to use Outlook and supposedly IE. Some of our
internal java websites give Firefox problems, but I can't send the bug
report because the offending code is confidential and behind a firewall.
At home I use Firefox and Thunderbird.

I do use it, and I wouldn't dream of using anything else! Of course I
use a command-line client (elm) when I log in to my UNix box, but on the
laptop I use only Thunderbird for news and email.

It is good to see other people trying and using FireFox. It's such a
great browser! I myself wouldn't run buggy, hole-filled MSIE if I were
paid to.

Anyway, try Thunderbird. It's what I use and it rocks. It still has a
few kinks to work out, but they're minor and shouldn't affect your
newsreading.

Thanks for the advice gang.   I have downloaded Firefox and Thunderbird
and so far they are working well.   A friend had sent me a felix
animation and I couldn't get it, which is why I decided to give up my
old browser.   Here's the animation btw :)

Is there any way of changing the type face in Firefox and Thunderbird?
I suspect the way is in there somewhere but I can't seem to find it.
I hate small curly print and the type on my old browser was fairly
large and plain (one of the reasons I stayed with it)

As far as bubbels goes I have only one thing to say  "BUGGER BUBBELS"
(Apologies for swearing but extreme circumstances promote strong words, lol.

Tool, options (at the bottom) then General, then Fonts and Colors.

You may want to check out Tools - Themes - Get more themes and Tools -
Extensions - Get more extensions on both Firefox and Thunderbird, as the
Themes give them a new appearance and the Extensions tweak the ease of
use to how you like it.

Hoping for a better way to win at Bubbel? :)

Thunderbird is the mail/news client that goes with Firefox, but
Firefox alone is an outstanding browser - it's just that it's a single
purpose program and therefore can be much better at what it does than
if it had to do many things.

I received an interesting newsletter today "Secrets of Firefox 1.0"
(Windows Secrets Newsletter) - there is a web version:

Does anyone here know if FF will work with RoboForm? I'd like to use it more
but I miss having RoboForm handy when I do.

I just found it on the web, and there is a banner at the top of the
page that tells you to make it work with Netscape/Mozilla Firefox to
download an adaptor.

I found it. Now the trouble is I can't get FF to open. It was fine before I
upgraded to version 1.0. Now it just won't open, period.

I even uninstalled it and reinstalled, with same result. The first thing I
was going to do with it was mend the "memory leak" mentioned in a page
linked from a message in this thread.

What happens is I click to start FF and it appears to be loading - that is,
it appears in the taskbar - but no matter how long I wait, the window never
opens. And can only be closed with the Task Manager.
