Catnip. The good stuff this time.

Christina Websell - 01 Dec 2004 17:27 GMT I have a friend who has three cats, and while she was driving me to hospital the last time, I asked her whether hers liked catnip or not. She said two of them did, and one was absolutely mad about it. I told her that I'd bought Kitty & BF a catnip mouse (no interest) and then a catnip spray, which I sprayed the mousie and their bed with, everything. They couldn't care less. She told me that she knew where to get "good stuff" Wink, and would get some for my cats. That was a few weeks ago, and I thought nothing else about it. Today is my b'day, and a package in the porch contained two wrapped presents. One was a CD for me and the other was a small box of CATNIP!! "that will launch your cat into a whimsical paradise called Kookamunga. Kookamunga is like Nirvana or heaven for cats - but with better parking."
Inside the box was a thingie a bit like a handkerchief and some string. I took it I had to tie the catnip up into the material, so I did, and used half of it to make a little pouchie thing.
I threw it in the direction of Boyfriend, and he came to look to see what it was. As soon as he got up to it, he started to rub his cheeks against it and roll on the carpet. Then he began to toss it, and bite it and dangle it from his claws as he held his legs right up in the air. LOL! He played like this for about fifteen minutes and then he decided he loved me very much. He wound himself round and round my legs and attempted to purr - he doesn't normally purr, it's hard for him for some reason. Then he lay on the carpet again, and kept showing me his tummy and doing upside downy head.
So - I guess it works on Boyfriend <g> Kitty seems to be immune to it. After BF was completely stoned out, I showed Kitty the cotton pouch and put it right under her nose. No go.
Not many minutes later, BF asked to go out. I wasn't sure whether to let him in case he wasn't quite there in his mind. However, he came back safely after 20 minutes, and got his mouth round the catnip pouchie again.
He's been out to toilet just now, come in, and he's definitely in for the night. Wow. This is *some* stuff. He is *not* going out tonight. Last night, foxes woke me up at 1 a.m. going "WoW, WoW. WoW" in front of my house. I got up, looked out of the window, and couldn't see anything. At ten to two I saw a very large dog fox go past wowwing, this is the contact call. Sometimes they take cats. Not all foxes will, but some do. I was glad mine were inside. I know a farmer friend who has witnessed a fox with a cat in it's mouth, and someone else who found a foxes earth under a shed with quite a few cat's paws there. So, I'd prefer that my two would stay in at night. They don't always want to, though. They like to hunt, but the back door is open for them 24/7, and I like to think if a fox was after them, they could run for the house. Alternatively there are a lot of trees they could climb. They can both climb like experts.

I"m glad Boyfriend has found a catnip toy to love!

WoW" in front of my [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > worth the chance. > Sherry There isn't any doubt that *some* foxes will take cats. Not all of them. I know someone who has a cat, and was still up quite late, maybe 1 a.m. His security light came on, and he heard an awful fighting noise. He looked out of his window and saw that a fox had hold of his cat. He raced outside, the fox dropped the cat. It was very badly injured, had to go to TED immediately, fortunately eventually recovered. Which makes me wonder about all these cats that go missing in Britain and never appear again. If he hadn't been up so late, he couldn't have intervened and would never had known what happened to his cat. BF could definitely look after himself against a fox. Not when he's stoned though! He is inside and safe and that's where he'll be until the morning. I love him too much to take any risks with him.

Most predators aren't *that* fussy about prey.

I told you the good stuff might get a reaction!
Sounds like Kitty is one of those felines who is not genetically predisposed to respond to catnip.

When I decide to go to bed, they are more often than not still inside the house, so I leave the kitchen door ajar so they can go out if they want to. They could stay inside all night, but often they don't. They are both ex-ferals and like to hunt. Boyfriend will stay inside for hours, unless he notices the back door is shut. Then he wants to go out. If it is ajar he'll stay in all day or night.

Vixens maybe 14lbs, and dogs up to about 21lbs or maybe a little more. They seem to like to take prey that won't fight back, like chickens and rabbits. A cat would scratch them badly, and BF grows larger, maybe 9 lbs now, young and strong. Most foxes only take cats when their cubs need a lot of meat at say, 8-16 weeks. April-May-June time. However, when he's stoned, the safest place is in! He's in now, meatloafing on my armchair. Not stoned though, I've packed his catnip pouch into one of those plastic bags that zip up so as not to lose it's scent. or appeal. The friend who bought it for him told me on the phone tonight to rub it between my hands before I gave it him again, as it makes the scent stronger. I shall try that. Not tonight though. Mild altering stuff is just for a treat for him now and again ;-) (oh, you should have seen him! Shy, timid, polite, dignified Boyfriend on the good kittyweed!!) I haven't reminded him what he was like...I fear it would embarrass him.

Yes, catnip *really* varies in potency. Someone used to give me some homegrown stuff which was far better than anything I've bought commercially. (Re-reading that...I'm *really* talking about 'nip - it could be taken another way!)
Someone in a health food store told me cats went mad for valerian, so I buoght some. Mine didn't like it, and I hated the smell! But they do like some nice catnip. Mandy even enjoyed the milder cat mint that I grew outside last summer. I tried growing catnip one summer. I ended up with a kind of dust bowl in that part of the garden. I swear every cat with a couple of miles must have loved it!

It's a concern in more rural or suburban areas than my neighbourhood. Here, the risks are, first and foremost, cars. Then other cats/dogs, humans, etc.

Coyotes only managed to get across the Cabot Strait to Newfoundland a few years ago. That's in the southwestern corner of the Island and I live in the southeast. Coyotes have been reported nearer and nearer to my corner of the island, but so far, not right in the city.
Nevertheless, I prefer to keep the cats in except on harness & under supervision. Too many cats get run over by cars, and Mandy in particular has no street sense in spite of having been nearly killed by a car shortly after we moved here.

I decided around ten years ago that I would do exactly what I wanted to do on my birthday, because it is the one day of the year that's yours alone. So I did exactly what I wanted ;-) and I advise everyone else to do the same. Your birthday is "your" day, and is special. Go for what you want to do on that day. Anything. Do it.

CatNipped - 02 Dec 2004 14:23 GMT Happy, hoppy purrrrrday Tweed - hope you have many, many more!
My girls each react differently to catnip. Bandit just rolls herself around in it extatically, Demi likes to sniff and play with toys that have it on it, Jessie likes to eat it, and Sammy is just starting to react to it like big sister Bandit does (for a while she just ignored it).
Hugs,

I didn't believe catnip would have any effect (tried the pet shop stuff) no go, until this good stuff arrived. It's just a pity that Kitty doesn't get a hit from it too. Would improve her temper! I wonder what a stoned Kitty FC might be like? Perhaps she might show me her tummy to stroke and not slash and bunny-kick me if I touch.

Not unless you come up from behind her and rub her sides, then slowly work your hands down to her chest, where she'll enjoy it for a few seconds before realizing that hey, someone's petting my undersides!, and jump away.

Christina Websell - 02 Dec 2004 23:07 GMT >> I didn't believe catnip would have any effect (tried the pet shop stuff) >> no [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > jump > away. There is no chance at all that Kitty Farmcat will get stoned. I tried her with the catnip mouse, the catnip spray and this new "mild altering" catnip in a muslin bag that Boyfriend got stoned on. Nothing. She sniffed the bag of this new fantastic stuff, then went back to sleep. She won't ever let me touch her tummy, even though she flashes it at me and rolls on her back inviting a tummy rub. If I try, it's an immediate grab by all four paws with 20 claws stuck in my hand. I've learnt about Kitty now.
Boyfriend has no aggression whatsover. Although he is rather shy, he will sometimes turn his tummy up for a cuddle and stroke, and put both his front paws gently round my hand. No claws. As if to say I trust you to fondle my tummy. Awww.. Love him to bits.

Tickle Kitty's tummy, then count the holes in your hand. You'll find a cat has only 18 claws. ;-)

Oh, he did! He couldn't decide whether to roll on it, throw it around, go upside down and dangle it from his upright legs, bite it, or all at once.
Which was very nice to see him let go, because he is quite shy.

Singh - 03 Dec 2004 13:02 GMT Like hey man, the colors!!! I've gotten our kids Kookamunga and it's some premium kittyweed. They also make treats; Stosh and Brandy adore them, but Roxie and Odessa are purists who only like their catnip in its natural state. You may want to check out Cosmic Catnip too. That one's a guaranteed high every time.
You may want to check out some valerian herb for Kitty. Some cats who don't do kittyweed go bats for valerian root. It has a more mellowing effect than catnip.
Happy birthday, by the way. As for Boyfriend, I hope that CD's got some good stoner music. (joke, joke!) I know a lady who puts on the Grateful Dead for her cats whenever she gets them nipped up.
