Doing mean things to my cat...

Or so Felix thins they're mean things.  Actually, I need y'all's help. Felix
is my black/white tuxedo who has the bad ears (and is slowly going deaf).
He went to TED yesterday for a checkup on his tooth that was pulled, a
pedicure and the main reason was for TED to look at his ears AGAIN.  The
left one was pretty goopy looking.  They cleaned them out thoroughly and
then TED told me that I'm going to have to start cleaning Felix's ears
*every day*!!!!!

Here's where I am soliciting help.  For those of you who have to administer
day to day medicines and such, how do you do it??  And since I have to
squirt liquid into Felix's ears, do y'all have any suggestions on how I can
do this as painlessly as possible??  I'm thinking that I will put him
between my legs and "sit on him" for a nanosecond while I do it.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!!  Oh, and purrsss for this
being as easy as possible for Felix and me!!!

TIA!

can't help with the actual meds part, but a treat before and after is in
order, whatever it is he likes best... and I know you said his condition was
inoperable but have you got a second opinion on that?  Lee

Back when Tigger (RB) had to take ear drops and have his ears cleaned out
regularly, I would grab him, wrap him in a towel, plop him between my
knees with his butt up against me, and work on his ears that way. When he
started to try to squirm away from the ear drops he would back up tighter
against me, just locking him in tighter.

I think the biggest help back then was that afterwards I'd open up a can
of tuna for him. Having rewards coming afterwards made him more willing
to put up with the treatment.

Purrs coming!

You're having to do this reminds of little Samuel Redcat. When he first
came to live with me he was a sick little kitty; I had trapped him from
the parking lot of the warehouse where I worked and he had an eye
infection and a respiratory infection. He got oral antibiotics and eye
salve twice a day. I dreaded having to do it, but for the two weeks he was
on them he never fought me and never complained. He just sat still and
took his drops, and allowed me to apply the eye salve without complaint.

About a year later he developed an ear infection that required oral
antibiotics. Did he still sit there quietly and let me give him his meds?
Now way, Jose! He was a completely different kitty. I'll be purring that
Felix will behave more like 2-month-old Sammy than like 1-year-old Sammy!

Hey Dan...  I have a Tigger(RB) too!  And I still have his sister, Pooh Bear
(she'll be 15! in June and is a fat and happy senior).  Anywaaay, I think
your "manuever" you used is exactly how I'm going to deal with Felix.  I'm
giving him a break today after the deep cleaning he got at TED's yesterday.
So I will let you know how it goes.  My fear is tho', since I'll be doing
this a lot, I'm afraid he'll start to run from me any time I get near him.
The treat thing would be great, but he doesn't like anything but his dry
kibble.  He is my number one bed buddy at night tho', so I'm hoping all the
loving and cuddling that we do will continue.  And maybe he'll think of me
more when we cuddle then when I have to man-handle him for his ear wash.  He
was a rescue cat in a cat house and he's always been a little skiddish.
When anyone other than my best friend, or my dad comes in my house, Felix
vanishes up into the basement ceiling rafters.

This is gonna be tricky, but I pray (with the help of purrs in here) that
things will work out alright.  Afterall, I only want the best for this
little guy!!

FYI, chronic ear problems such as you describe are often caused by a
dry food diet (allergies to certain components), especially those
containing corn. We have seen several cats in our clinic that have had
similar chronic issues and were cleared up with something as simple as
a change in diet. We recommend grain free canned food such as Wellness
(grain free flavors only), Nature's Variety and Innova EVO. We also
really try to limit fish as it is high in histamines and more prone to
cause allergic reactions. Results do not happen overnight and usually
take about 6 weeks or slightly longer, but this simple change has done
wonders for many of our patients. It certainly would be worth a try.

Well, I'd suggest wrapping Felix  up in a towel, with the meds prepped
before hand and doing it as quickly as possible, then unwrapping him and
giving him a treat.
And major puuuuuurrs sent from me and Mosey
