Varieties of fur

Yowie - 18 May 2008 02:08 GMT I've never realised that cat fur comes in so many varieties. Not the colour, or the length, but the texture.
Shmogg had short hair, but he felt soft, like rabbit fur. He had marino like 'crimping' in his fur on his shoulders, and his chest fur was softer than his back fur
Pickle has short hair too, but he feels smooth and slick all over, almost like water would run off like a duck.
Suki has long hair. Its usually cool and smooth, and 'heavy', such that she has a part down her back. Even though its long hair, its never fuzzy or fluffy, and always neat. She doesnt seem to need brushing. Suki has almost a blue sheen to her white fur.
Shadow had long hair. Its fuzzy and warm like felt or velvet. It sticks out in all directions and all the fur besides the guard hair is wavy (but not wavy together, like marino wool or like Shmogg). Her armpits & belly have little curls. Shadow needs to be brushed. Shadow has a yellowish sheen to her white fur (where its clean, otherwise its grey/brown)
I can tell the difference between Suki & Shadow more by touch than sight, LOL.
Cats continue to amaze me....

Sammy has the finest, sleekest fur I've ever felt. Cleo's fur is soft and fluffy, but not as sleek as Sammy's. Tabitha's is long and soft, but tends to mat. Amelia and Harri have fur that is somewhat coarse and Ranger's is smooth and soft.
It really is amazing the differences in fur textures.

They didn't 'feel' a bit alike.
Jake's fur is changing as he gets older. I can tell he isn't in great good health. His fur has gotten softer and a bit thinner. Less guard hair as well.
Molly has a firm fairly course coat. Especially today as I got probably the last of the winter undercoat out or her this morning.

They're all so different. When a cat jumps on the bed at night, I can immediately tell which one it is just by touching their fur.

Heh, I can tell just by the weight landing on the bed which one it is. ;) But their fur is also completely different. Miranda's is very, very short and very, very soft. Caliban's is longer and sleeker.
Nikki had semi-long and fairly coarse fur. I used to think Frank had the softest fur any cat could have, until I touched a Russian Blue for the first time.

Charleen Welton - 18 May 2008 18:18 GMT Marina I was going to ask you about the texture of Miranda's fur. Victor is about 95% Russian Blue and has such soft and lovely fur. I love to rub my face along his sides (belly rubs are not allowed). His cheek fur is full, he likes it petted as much as I like petting it. Does Mir enjoy being petted for long periods of time ie 10 minutes? Charleen

Does Mir enjoy being petted > for long periods of time ie 10 minutes? > Charleen It's incredibly soft, isn't it? Mir doesn't like long petting sessions. She gets sort of embarrassed if I bring my face too close to hers. ;) (Luckily Caliban loves having his tummy smurgled.) But Mir prefers 'beatings', i.e. very rough handling and rubbing the wrong way etc. If I try to stroke her when she doesn't want to be stroked, she drops her back out of my reach. I'd never had a cat who wouldn't arch its back to meet my hand when I stroked it, before Mir. I was a bit put out by this at first, but now I've jhust accepted that she doesn't always like to be touched.

All of my cats do this at different times, although it's usually their heads, not their backs, that they swerve away from, to avoid contact with my approaching hand.
Smudge usually loves to be petted, but she doesn't always react well when my hand comes directly at her head. But other times, she loves that, and will extend her head toward me. So I've had to learn when it's OK and when it's not.
Roxy has specific times when she wants to be petted and when she doesn't. If I try to pet her during one of the off times, she'll move her head out of the way and then glare at me.
Licky loves petting, but often he's too scared. So when he moves out of my way, I know he's just feeling skittish, rather than peevish like my old ladies!

Also Lyle sheds more than Frank.

[quoted text clipped - 23 lines] > > Yowie You can even have different kinds of fur on the same cat. I've had three black-and-white cats, and for the most part, their black fur was sleek and dense, and lay down flat-- like Pickle sounds. It's shiny, like a black mirror. The white fur seems lighter and fluffier, and is more easily ruffled. Stinky's white fur has always been very bright white. It's always been hard to get a good pic of him, because his white fur would bounce the flash right back, and he looks radioactive. ;)

bastXXXette@sonic.net - 18 May 2008 23:04 GMT Roxy: Her fur is satin-smooth. The white fur underneath is as soft as a rabbit's.
Licky: His is a bit more coarse than the girls' but still sleek. One thing I've noticed is that his fur is very dense - lots of follicles per square inch of body surface. So I call him my "plush boy".
Smudge: Her fur is fairly soft to the touch, more like silk than satin. Each individual hair is very, very fine, and a bit bumpy, giving her an overall "frizzy" look, almost. And those individual hairs have lots of friction on them, so they *love* to clump together. I'm forever dealing with Smudge's fur mats!
By comparison, Everett had the most coarse fur I've ever felt on a cat! After a month of eating the fancy stuff I feed my cats, it got a bit smoother, but never as smooth as my 3. He has a littermate who's also up for adoption, and they share a cage at the mobile on Sundays. His brother is a grey tabby and extremely soft and smooth. I'll be visiting both of them this afternoon.

Cheryl P. - 18 May 2008 16:34 GMT > I've never realised that cat fur comes in so many varieties. Not the colour, > or the length, but the texture. ><snip> I first noticed this with Mandy and Betsy (both RB) who were so similar to each other in colouring that strangers confused them. And they were both short-haired, too, your classic tabby-tortie DSH with their brown black and grey tabby stripes and little patches of white under the chin and some orange elsewhere.
Their fur texture was quite different. Mandy's was silky, Betsy's, although smooth, was less silky. Sam, the current owner is a black DSH with fur texture more like Betsy's. I saw Mandy's mother when I adopted Mandy. She had sort of semi-long hair - not persian or anything, but definitely longer than your typical DSH cat's fur. I used to wonder if the unusual texture of Mandy's fur was due to her mother - although Mandy's fur wasn't long at all.

tanadashoes - 18 May 2008 21:27 GMT > I've never realised that cat fur comes in so many varieties. Not the > colour, or the length, but the texture. You got that right.
Tanada: very soft plushy fur. It reminds me of rabbit fur.
QC: long fine textured fur, thick and with two or three lengths. Her's is the only "oily" textured fur of the lot.
Merlin: short hard textured fur on the tabby part, soft plushy fur on the white parts. Sometimes he looks like he has a mullet.
Pine Cone: The strangest colored tabby of the cats, with the tabby parts being orange nearest the skin, brown half way up the hair shaft, and grey at the tips. He also has several layers of fur and his is the most lush feeling of the owners.
Huey: sleek and fluffy fur. His feels like a younger Tanada's fur did.
Sonya: oriental, siamese fur. Thin textured, soft, and short furred.
Qui Gun Kit: His fur is like a shell in a way. slick and not as forgiving as the other owners are. It is the closest to Merlin's fur that any of the cats have.
Miss Calico Girl: MCG's fur is short and frilly feeling. It is so thich that it sticks out from the skin.
Wamsee: Her fur is soft and reminds me of a striped teddy bear's. The fur on her ears has been repeatedly attacked by Tanada, so some of her skin is showing, but she doesn't care so long as the other cats let her sleep in peace.
