Drinkwell Fountain Shelf-life?

How old is too old?  For the drinkwell fountain, I mean :)

Before I left for SC in January I'd drained and cleaned Persia's Drinkwell
fountain, including removing the motor.  But I'd already noticed it had
gotten harder and harder to remove the motor to do a thorough cleaning.  It
just didn't want to twist out as easily (and yes, I cleaned it completely
each time).

When I got back home (the fountain had been drained and unplugged since
January) I couldn't take the motor out of the housing at all.  I tried and
tried and nearly broke a finger off!  LOL  So I simply removed the impeller
blade from the motor (without removing the motor) and brushed out the
insides, avoiding immersing the base while I cleaned the fountain.  Refilled
it, plugged it back in and Persia has been happily sipping ever since.

I guess this one is about 4 years old now.  Is it time to replace it?  How
long do these things last?

I've had a couple go that way - ended up using a bent-tip pair of
pliers to remove the motor.  I don't remove the motor EVERY time I
clean them, but there is gunk and slime that can (and will) build up
at that rubber gasket if the motor is not removed and that area
cleaned occasionally.

I finally had one fountain die - gasket started leaking, so I bought
one of the newer "platinum" versions - the entire pump is submersed in
the water, and it makes it easier to clean!

Persia temporarily took over my body.  Not the first time it's happened :)

If Mom can hold out (she's still playing the "pitiful me" card), John will
drive down here after his show in June and we'll drive to SC together.  With
Persia.  That's a good thing, since I really didn't look forward to a 700
mile drive all by myself with Persia acting as a backseat driver.
