Suddenly political posts are appearing in the guise of our regular posters,
in reply to threads about cats; said replies have nothing to do with cats.
I've noticed some other posters original on topic posts are appearing double
where they weren't here that way before. Does someone need to do a virus
scan or something? Is it my bellsouth host or do others see this too?

I'm seeing nothing like that in my reader-- but I have heard about
trolling posts spoofing regular posters in another ng. I'll check the
group through another reader to see if I see any of it.

Whoa! I just did a search on a random string from the posting-- the
same thing has been pretty much spewed all over USENET this morning.

They are coming from HiNetnews.hinet.com. Not our regular posters.

I've seen it on a couple of newsgroups. Exact same post through a forged
regular address.

Neither have I. I'm guessing wherever my ISP gets its newsfeed from is
doing well at filtering the garbage. :-)

It looks like news.individual.net is doing a good job of filtering as I
haven't seen them either.

Seen them in several groups, both cat and non-cat. what's annoying is that
they appear to be from regular posters, so you don't know *not* to block
them, etc....

I've seen a several, which, in most cases, looked like incomplete posts
-- as if a chunk of text came out of one message in a fairly random
manner. IIRC, the ones I saw were supposedly from Steve Touchstone, but
nothing like what I'd think of as his writing style.

Yes, those are the ones I've noticed.

Me too I wondered what was going on cause Steve doesn't
usually write like that and it looked so strangeand out of context

the follow ups are pointed at news.admin.net-abuse.email . The intention is
to flood out
the group and interfere with the group. If ya want to read about it google
search groups
hipcrime faq or dippy flood.

[groan] Dippy again? I'd have thought someone would have hunted it
down and gotten it offline by now.

Ditto to Steve, plus a couple "from" MaryL and some "from" Jean Hobbs.

I don't think you'll see anything, NIN seems to be doing a good job of
filtering. Another good reason for people to sign up, especially as it's
free.

It's not just your host, as I saw two or three posts with my name that
I didn't post. Then saw pretty much the same incomplete message from a
couple other regulars, so figured it was someone with WAY too much
time on their hands playing around - sort of like a troll. Hope it's
not some new troll method, since it would be harder to ignore when the
posts purport to be from regulars
