Worried About Sammy

Some of you may remember, I tried switching my clowder to an all canned food
diet about 6 months ago (this is the first time I've had boy cats and I was
worried about struvite crystals causing a blockage).  They were eating
mostly canned and just a bit of dry Science Diet to snack on, but I wanted
them to eat only canned.  It went OK at first, but then they all started to
lose too much weight - and Demi and Jessie can't afford to lose a single
ounce since they're so small.  So, I started giving them the dry Science
Diet again (giving them more canned wouldn't have worked since they were
leaving some of the canned on their plates already).

Now, I've noticed that Sammy is drinking lots and lots of water - one of the
signs of diabetes.  She doesn't have any of the other signs, and it could
just be that she needs more water with the dry (her favorite, so she eats
more of it than the others), but I'm still worried.  If she continues this
I'm going to take her to the vet Saturday and see what he thinks.

I would really appreciate some spare purrs that this is just my being a
worry-wort and that Sammy is fine.

I don't blame you for being worried; but I also think it sounds
reasonable that she's drinking more because of the dry food.  The
first thing I noticed when Cherokee's
kidneys started to fail is that he had his head stuck in the water
bowl it seemed
like constantly. (he was very old by then, at least 16)
It's really hard to regulate a diet in a multi-cat household, but you
could try taking the dry food away from her again (sorry,
Sammy!)....and see if her intake decreases.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too.  But it would have to be all or
nothing - they "free feed" even on the canned food (Demi, especially, will
wait until everyone else if finished eating before she'll eat), so I can't
feed them and just immediately pick it up when they're finished eating.  So
it's not a matter of just feeding her in a confined space - I would have to
confine her 24/7 to be able to really control her diet without taking the
dry away from the others too.

Sheesh - I thought being a mom to bare kids was hard!  ;>

Ours eat a mix of canned and dry.  Smokey's at least 7 now, probably
8, and hasn't had any problems.  Would that be easier?

Purrs and good luck

Yeah, that's what we're doing now.  But diabetic cats will often be "cured"
by switching to an all canned diet, so I'm worried that the opposite might
be happening (that is, Sammy *getting* diabetes by eating dry which is much
higher in carbs and sugars).  Maybe I'm just being overly paranoid, but the
way my luck runs I can never just rule out bad things happening since they
so often do happen to me - I'm that person that walks around with the black
cloud over my head.

I was worried that Pua may have diabetes, too, because she started dropping
weight and drinking a bunch of water.  I feed her wet now, she completely
stays away from the dry, she's not drinking as much water, she's eating
more, gaining more weight, but now she FARTS.  It's going to take a little
time for her system to adjust, I guess, but the wet food seems to have done
the trick.  I feed her one can, I split it up between Pua, Tyrone & Chloe
putting most of the food onto Pua's plate.  Chloe and Tyrone nibble and then
walk away and Pua cleans up.  Essentially, Pua's getting most of the whole
can.  I don't want to isolate Pua during feedings and I know Chloe and
Tyrone are going to walk away, anyway, so it's no big deal.  Oh, and Pua's
throwing up hairballs a bit less on the wet food as well.  The only negative
is the farting thing - and it's a BIG negative!  LOL.  :~)

Lots of purrs of course.  But probably nothing anyway.  Jake has always had
a huge appetite for water.  Lots of cats just do.

I could never really tell how much water Persia drank until I got her the
Drinkwell fountain.  After I got it for her (years ago now) I noticed she
sits there slurping it like a drunk who has been given a keg of beer :)

Major Purrs, prayers and hugs sent your way
from Kyla and Mosey for you and Sammy to be okay.
Bless your heart.

A nice fresh batch of home-brewed purrs on the way for
Sammy.

Purrs for Sammy. It makes sense that she would drink more if she is
eating dry.

Is she visiting the litterbox a lot as well?  That might be one of the
questions the vet will ask.  It's one thing for them to be drinking a
lot of water, but it also is important to know if the water is just
going right through the system.

A urinialysis +/-  bloodwork would be in order to check for a bladder
infection and to check the state of her kidneys.  But then again it
could be the increased sodium.

What prescription diet is she on?

They're all eating mainly the canned with about 1, maybe 2 cups of Science
Diet Mature Adult formula for all to browse on.  On the canned only, even
though they were leaving left overs, they still lost weight - something
Jessie and Demi really can't afford.  Since I added back the dry they've
regained the weight they lost, so everybody is at the weight they should be
and all are active and seemingly healthy.

I'm probably just being paranoid, and it could be that Sammy is just so dang
*loud* when she drinks from the Drinkwell that I notice it more.  She
doesn't have *any* other symptoms of diabetes so I'm going to hold off
taking her to the vet (I've heard that it's hard for a vet to diagnose
diabetes with just labwork because other things, including just the stress
of the office visit, can effect the results).  I'm watching for any of the
other signs I saw listed on the 'net, and will bring her in at the least
little sign that something is wrong.

That's exactly why I didn't bring Pua in to TED for a diabetes test,
although I had intended to.  Once I got her on the wet food about a month
ago, she's been gaining weight and drinking a lot less water.  It's
summertime here in Florida, now, we have the windows open and it's HOT.
You'd think she'd be drinking *more* water.  Meanwhile, she's extremely
playful, she's peeing less and she seems to be more affectionate.

No, wait, that's not quite right about the affection part.  She's *almost*
annoyingly my constant companion to the point the other furkids are getting
really pissed off.  Chloe and Pua have been having hissy fits and are
pulling tufts of fur out of each other.  Tyrone just looks at me and cries
because he wants on my lap and Pua's already there.  They don't share me
well.

Pua is now always, and I mean ALWAYS, underfoot.  I accidentally step on
her, I accidentally kick her.  She follows me step-by-step everywhere in the
house.  It's particulary difficult when I'm cooking.  You know, doing the
dance between the stove, the sink, the 'fridge and the pantry - she's
constantly in the way.  It's really only been since the wet food thing, too.
I think she finally feels better, and in her own way, she's thanking me.
I'm going to keep feeding her the wet.

As I'm typing this, she's on the chair next to me, laying on one of my
sweatshirts that I placed there for her.  It's a wooden chair; I wanted her
to be comfortable.  :~)   She's my little sweetheart, but I wish she could
just watch me from afar sometimes.  LOL.

I agree to monitor it for the time being, but I would suggest that you
NOT focus on diabetes.  There are other issues that could be causing
increased water intake.  As I mentioned, bladder and kidney issues are
also possible.

Try to monitor her visits to the litterbox as well if you can.

That's my two cents....

purrs on the way,

I most certainly will keep an eye on her, Kristi, thanks!  In fact I'm
keeping a *very* close eye on everyone right now after Hunter's sudden death
(although we're pretty sure it was his heart, and he wasn't in physical
contact with the rest of the clowder yet, still I think you can never be too
careful when dealing with the health of furry loved ones).

Drinking lots of water is often a sign of kidney disease in cats.  Because
Winston has kidney disease, I have a mug of water for him on our second
floor bathroom floor and another one in the basement near his litter box.
Of course, he has his normal bowl of water on the first floor next to his
food.
