Christmas with kitten?

Krista - 29 Nov 2004 08:43 GMT Can it be done? DH and I are debating whether to even have a tree this year, considering that Hubert is into absolutely everything and will not be dissuaded. What little decorating I've done so far has been met with great enthusiasm by Hubert, to whom the whole world is a kitty toy.
Our RB Mikey didn't climb the tree or swat the ornaments off of it. (His main expression of Christmas Spirit was spraying all the decorations.) Mike was a hoolikitten pre-DH, and I didn't bother with a tree then, but now most of our ornaments are glass. Shortsighted, yes, but I just didn't plan on ever having Christmas with any other cats but Mike. 2004 brought lots of changes, and now Christmas approaches again.
Does anyone have any sure-fire way to keep a kitten out of a Christmas tree? Electric fence? Mine the living room floor? Hire 24-hour surveillance personnel, armed with waterguns?
And I have added new pics of those adorable beasties Tallulah and Hubert:

It might be hard to keep Hubert away from a tree this year, considering how young he is. One suggestion is to try to make a "barricade" of strategically-placed giftwrapped packages that would make it difficult for Hubert to get to the tree. If you have an artificial tree, you could "experiment" first by setting the tree up (undecorated) for a few days, and observe Hubert's behavior. He probably won't be able to climb the outside of the branches, so it will help if they droop low. However, you want to keep him away from the trunk and sturdier/more rigid parts of the branches, which would be more inviting and "climbable."

We will be getting a live tree, if we do get one at all; maybe we'll just get a little bitty tree and leave it up for a day or two before decorating it, just to see how he does. An utterly unadorned tree in the living room would look a little odd, but it may just have to be a dry run in preparation for next year. :-)

Just in case :) With her first kitten my sister came home from work one day to find the tree lying on the floor. Thankfully they hadn't decorated it yet so they stood it back up in a corner and anchored it with twine to hooks screwed into the walls...

Luna was curious about it and Maya tried very hard to steal some ornaments she really liked. However... little Fez would no doubt climb the tree and his brother Rufous would love to chew on the lights. So we've decided to forgo the tree. Neither of us is home for x-mas anyway... :)

She also discovered that one can more easily access said liquid if one tips over the cup. So, I decided to teach her not to do that. I took some of the little red hot peppers (commonly used in asian food), bruised them with a mortar and pestle, and made a tea with some nice boiling water. After letting it steep (and cool), I put the cup of pepper tea in the usual place. Brenna came up, sniffed, and proceeded to take a healthy drink of the tea!!! I put a single drop of the tea on my tongue and was racing for some bread to help put out the fire! I have since learned that Brenna thinks that salsa and thing with much garlic are almost as good as chocolate smells. (No, she has never tasted chocolate.) Just more proof that there is no "typical" cat.
My holiday tradition is to bring in the artificial tree, set it up with lights, then decorate it a couple days later when Brenna is used to it being there.

I may be wrong, but I'm sure I read somewhere that cats don't have taste receptors for chilli and that sort of thing, so it just doesn't register. Or maybe some do, some don't. Isn't there some incidence in humans of being able to taste a certain chemical or not, and the ability (or lack of) being a genetic thing? I know there's some chemical in cilantro (coriander leaves) that some people can taste and others can't. The people who *can* taste the chemical really HATE cilantro and they say it tastes like soap. Luckily for me, I am unable to taste the soapy taste, and I love the stuff. It's an important spice in two of my favorite cuisines, Mexican and Thai.

I love cilantro, but to me, raw celery always tastes a bit soapy. If I eat it, it's with strong-tasting stuff, like in tuna salad to give it some crunch.

I don't think it tastes like soap, it tastes exactly like what it is (B-L-E-H!), but it's a flavor that's spoiled an otherwise lovely salad for me, more than once!

I am thinking that we will do the same as you; get a tree and set it up, and hold off on decorating. I am also thinking about anchoring it to the wall and/or ceiling as many people have suggested.

Krista - 30 Nov 2004 09:01 GMT > Haven't heard that expression before -- what does "boop" mean? "Booping the Hube" is a game I started playing with Hubert when he was a tiny kitten, when he was still too scared of us to let us pet him but was starting to come around to the idea of playing with us. I would poke him gently and say "Boop!" and he batted at my finger - it was a way of getting him used to being touched by the Big Scary Humans and getting him to interact with us a bit more. By now, of course, there are times when we wish he'd lay off the interacting already and take a nap or something, but we still do play the Boop game. :-)

Tallulah, honestly, reminds me of Aunt Bea.* I could see her putting on a hat and gloves and string of pearls and going to Garden Club, easy. She poses herself graciously to set an example for us sloppy humans, and she has two distinct walks - a stroll for normal occasions, and what can only be called a parade for when she's feeling pleased with herself. All this flies right out the window, however, when she's getting rowdy with Hubert. :-D

We always suspend or tree from the ceiling. There is a hook in the ceiling above where we put the tree and we wire the top of the tree to the hook, so the tree can't fall over. Then we just put all the ornaments back on as the "fall" off.

Even though Felix is middle-aged, I still won't use breakable ornaments [I've caught him batting at the ones I have a few too many times]. I'm sure we're going to get stories out of this about on a par with the "..... With Mommy" series. :-)
How's the weaning coming along? We once had a cat who seemed to be reluctant to wean kittens.

As I was saying, Tallulah has finally cut Hubert off, and he is *not* happy about it. He tries to nurse; she bunny-kicks him in the head and stalks off when he persists, and he looks all forlorn and needs to be petted. Poor Hubie! He's been eating solid food for 3 months, though, so I don't feel sorry for him. ;-)

Today we went back to TED for one more round of vaccinations, and Hubert weighed 7.5 pounds. He was 4 months old last week. He thanks you for the boop, and both of them appreciate the scritches.

Mine the living room floor? > Hire 24-hour surveillance personnel, armed with waterguns? I'm not even putting up a tree this year. In fact, since Shamrock joined us, I haven't even decorated a tree after the first Christmas when he kept pulling ornaments off, and one day the whole tree was knocked over. This year with kittens PLUS Shamrock, um, no way, no how. lol

Mine the living room floor? Hire 24-hour > surveillance personnel, armed with waterguns? I can't guarantee that it will work, but you could try placing a scat mat in front of the tree. We have ours set up in an alcove, with the mat hidden under the tree skirt. The cats haven't gone near it since the first day we set the tree up, about a week ago. Last year, our 1 year old went crazy on it, caught him up close to the top of the tree one time :)
I originally got the scat mat to try to solve the problem with him jumping on the kitchen counter, which he had been doing since being able to jump that high. It is expensive (about $40 or so) but decided to give it a try since others on here had positive experiences with it. Before the mat we tried EVERYTHING (double sided tape, water bottle, cans filled with coins, foil, etc), but the scat mat was the only thing that ultimately solved the counter problem. He's really stubborn and would start jumping up again as soon as we removed the tape, foil, etc.
