I've let Ginger-Lyn down and Rob as well.  We got our SS rebate in the bank
today.  It was half what we were supposed to get.  Worse, I'm in the hole
cash wise.  So I checked out the account and there is a $950.67 withdrawal
that I know nothing about.  I'm going to see what is going on, but in the
mean time, I will not be able to travel with Rob and Mandy to Ohio and take
care of Ginger-Lyn's owners while she's in hospital.  It was only supposed
to be for a day or two, but they were important days.

We also won't be able to go to Ft Campbell as well so that Rob can visit his
old unit.  This upsets me as much as not being able to help out Ginger-Lyn.
We also won't be able to travel into the Midwest and visit Lee, Granby, and
Dan.  I feel like my world has tumbled into the ground and there is nothing
left to do.

Rob tried to cheer me up by saying that now we can go to the meet and greet
in Florida, but I don't think that is happening either.  I'm so depressed
today.

(((((((Pam)))))))

Read over your post again.  Your tears aren't selfish.  You're concerned
about letting people down.  The fact that you are one of them doesn't mean
you're selfish.  It just means you're human.

Pam,

This may be an overly obvious message, but have you checked with your bank
to locate the source of that withdrawal?  You will not be financially
responsible if someone withdrew that money without your authorization.
Problems like sometimes take awhile -- but on the other hand, I had a friend
who was able to solve a similar problem in only 24 hours.  In her case,
someone had copied her checking information and forged her signature.

Also:  Those are not selfish tears.  You are concerned about other people,
and I think *anyone* would be upset about a situation like this.

Pam Darlin' S@@t  happens to the best laid plans.  There will always be
another time, if not here at the Bridge, as they say.  I know you are
feeling bad but don't take this all on your shoulders.  One thing at a time.
The SS thing you can't do anything about but figure out where the missing
money went, knock someone over the head and then start all over again.  Been
there, done this.  I too would love to go down to the gathering in Florida
but I won't even try and figure out a way. In my case it would mean having
to bring a half dozen people with me and that would end up being no
vacation.  One step at a time Pam that is all you can do.

They're not selfish at all, Pam - you're entitled. Getting a significantly
smaller SS rebate is a harsh blow, as is finding a big chunk of money gone
from your account. I'd be depressed in those conditions too!

Between us all, we'll figure out a way to arrange for Ginger-lyn's masters
to be watched over while she's in hospital. And Nancy and I will plan a
trip to IL or IN to meet with Gramby and Lee, and we'll find a way to get
all of us together with you and Rob another time.

Hang in there, Pam.

I know what you mean Daniel, our SS rebate wasn't deposited in our account
at all today, like it was supposed to.
I'm so sorry you're going thru all this Pam.

Dunno where Pam & Co.
are exactly in NC but gas gallon price seems to be slightly higher in
NC than here
in MileHigh. A fill-up of a 16-gallon
tank (my vehicle's capacity) is just about $10-15 short of one night's
lodging
in a decent motel/hotel there (excluding beachside). I doubt seriously
that
spa services - probably as common in TX as offered in my home state -
the
epitome of decadent vacation destinations, FL - are all over the place
in NC
lodgings, but maybe in the pricier places they are.
Correction: possibly Vegas could vie with FL as "epitome" destination
from
what I read lately, but Nevada seems to be hit much harder in every
way by
current recession/foreclosure/gas crises. "Epitome" = toss-up.
My criticism of 'Nipped's suggestion of a short "getaway" for Pam &
Rob is
limited to "spa services" reference.....NC is noted for many good
things -
vinegar-based BBQ! Yumyum! for one - natural gemstones (*not*
diamonds)
in parks you can go to and "dig up your own" jewels (in rock
formations) -
but *not* as I know it "spas" and accompanying pampering, LOL. I think
'Nipped was just thinking of what *her* idea of a substitute fun thing
might
be.Yeah, we DO have different notions of when you're at "broke" re
financial resources. Here jokes abound, as well as on tv late-night
humorists,
that spending your "stimulus" may well be done at the gas pump,
especially
if you drive a big, gas-hog SUV that leads you to the pump lots more
often
than my 3.5L 6-cyl. single-cab light truck does....
It sounded absurd, Tweed, and you have no way of being aware of the
above,
but a short cheap "getaway" would be cheaper than the original
plan...and
our country - much much younger than yours - is not based, as yours
is, on
centuries of historical existence, but on small plastic cards we use
instead
of cash...LOLOLOL.

I suspect Tweed is a practical soul, like me---I've never had a spa
treatment *or*
a massage and wouldn't dream of it. (I don't like strangers touching
me anyway).
But I agree that what I think is a total waste of $$$ to me, might be
extremely
beneficial to someone else--both mentally & physically, or that's what
I hear
from friends.
Our kids have already advised us we are hopeless sticks in the mud as
far
as knowing how to have "fun."
I hear that our gasoline is even higher than yours in Mile-High, which
is absurd
since we are an oil & gas state. But people are *still* driving their
SUV's and
nobody wants to carpool. That might change when it goes over $5 a
gallon
as predicted. Or maybe not.

I have a good friend who is an excellent massage therapist.  She would be
happy to give me a massage any time.  I envy people who can enjoy it.

I've had a few massages, with her and with others, but I just really can't
seem to enjoy them.

I do call her and beg once in a while when I get a pinched nerve that just

I've never done a "spa" thing, either; I'm not high maintenance.  I hear
massages and pedicures and the like are great but I doubt I'll ever bother
to find out.  Besides, not one hotel I can think of that offers spa services
costs less than $250/night and that *doesn't* include the spa services.
Forget about raiding the mini-bar!

Still, I take CN's post in the spirit it was intended - a suggestion for Pam
& Rob to try to do some little something for themselves rather than beating
themselves up about things.

================

I got my first massage ever last September at the annual cancer retreat.
Clothes stayed on and the husband and wife team did their best with my
aching back.  I get back pain a lot, but I would consider seeing a
chiropractor or getting a massage as a waste of money that could be used for
food or books (my big vice).  Before Rob started getting shaky hands, I used
to have him do most of my hair cuts.  He was pretty good.  Since I don't
want a shag hair cut, I now let it grow out until I can't stand it, and then
go to my favorite place to get a cut.  Tangles and Tips only charges me $25
for a clipping.  I can live with about $50/year + tip.

One of the reasons we need Vanessa is that we often have more than four
people on a trip with us and it is cheaper to drive one mini van than two
cars.

go away.  Of course, I'm taking meds that side-effects include headaches.

When I had very long, thick heavy hair, it sometimes gave me ordinary
headaches (not migraines). It seemed to depend on how I pinned it up -
there are ways to put long hair up in which you don't end up with the
mass of hair pulling on only a few places (I can't explain it any
better). I couldn't manage that routinely. I didn't really like wearing
it loose all the time because it blew around and tangled, and also I had
a job in which long loose hair was a safety hazard. Eventually I got fed
up enough that I had it cut, first to shoulder length and then to the
kind of very short cut I'd basically worn since I was a child except for
the few years I experimented with long hair. Sometimes when I see a
woman with beautiful long hair, especially put up in an attractive and
apparently effortless (and headache-free) style, I am seized with envy
and want to grow mine again, but such fits never last long. I just need
to think of the extra effort involved in keeping it neat and tidy.

I let my hair grow down past my waist (I don't really have a waist, ribs
then hip bones less than a hand span away) but down to the base of my hind
end.  It started throttling Rob during the night.  It was bad enough when it
was attacking me, but Rob doesn't deserve the attention.  Tangles and Tips
charges me less than $25 per trip.  I go once or twice a year and get it
lopped off to about shoulder length.  Better, I don't have an audience
watching me, and she does a good job at shaping it so that it grows out
evenly.  Right now the hair is below the shoulder blades and starting to get
on my nerves.

I thought about having Mandy cut it off, but the last time she cut hair, the
guy ended up with a buzz cut after his Mom took him to the barber shop to
have her work corrected.  I can't cut hair, though I did on occasion for Rob
when he needed it done between haircuts on post.  We made sure not to take
pictures of those hair cuts.

I go to a local chain of drop-in places that is cheaper than Wal-Mart
and whose employees given decent and sometimes excellent cuts. Of
course, since they're strictly drop-in with a changing roster of
hairdressers at each location, you can't really count on getting the
same person who gave you a cut you really liked last time the next time
you go.

At one point years ago I thought 'Bangs are easy. Why should I pay a
hairdresser just to trim my bangs a bit?'

There may be some people who can cut hair in a straight line while
looking in a mirror and not wearing their glasses. I am not among them.
Not even using tape to try to guide my efforts. There's a reason
hairdressers go to school, and learning how to cut hair growing on a
round object in a straight line is probably right at the top of the list
of 'things hairdressers learn in school'.

So now I go to a hairdresser and pay a small sum to have everything
trimmed neatly.

I always cut my own.  I used to have really long hair, but since I've been
sick it's just been falling out, so I cropped it to shoulder length.  It's
much healthier looking and it's all curling up, my husband likes it better
because it's thicker, but I miss my length.  I had to layer it because it is
growing back in, but it's growing back in stages.  I've got little
sticky-uppy spikes on the top and it's longer in the middle, so I cut it off
evenly at the shoulders.  Oh, I tapered it on the sides, too, so it all
curls around my face.  Meanwhile, I've got to cut my husband's hair.  He's
looking rather shaggy.  :~)

LOL, and another thing "not to try at home" is cutting your bangs when
they're wet. I did that last year, and was satisfied with their length
when I finished cutting. And then my hair dried. Hair is a lot shorter
when dry, I discovered.

LOL!

I used to cut my bangs back when I had long hair. IIRC, I used to cut
them when dry. Mum used to cut off the worst split ends at the back a
couple of times each year. Now that I have short hair, I have to go to a
hairdresser every few months or so. It's time to get my summer hair soon.

I cut my bangs once.  I was about six years old at the time.  I had a little
desk my grandfather had made for me.  The desk had two drawers.  I had a pad
of scratch paper, some pencils and a pair of scissors in one of the drawers.
As soon as I finished cutting my bangs, I realized my mother would not have
wanted me to do it.  I picked up the strands of hair I had cut off, wrapped
each strand in a piece of scratch paper, and put them all in the desk
drawer.  That way she would never know I had done it.  Somehow she figured
it out anyway.  ;-)

I just cut my own bangs and trim the ends and keep it shoulder length.

Wow, waist length?  My middle sister used to have the mose beautiful thick
waist length hair when she was a kid, and mine is very fine and  takes years

Gas is currently $3.599 at the cheap stations.  Cost $71.00 to fill up the
van at the beginning of the month.  We're currently at between 1/4 and 1/2
tank on Vanessa.  Mike is about the same, he thinks on the Tempo.  I've
saved some cash to put into the tank.  My MIL says that people need to get a
second mortgage on their houses just to pay for gas and food.  I told her
fine, but what would we do the next month.

Last week, gas (petrol) prices hit $1.579 per litre here for normal unleaded
stuff (Higher for premium fuels and deisel (diesel was at $1.799).

So, if I work it out (an you can check my math)

1 litre is 0.2641721 gallons. Thereby it costs AUS$5.97 a US gallon

Our Aussie dollar is worth about US$0.93

Working it out, that means that mean our petrol would cost you US$5.55 a
gallon.

Please do not complain about the price of petrol.

It cost me just over AU$86 to fill up my Camry (55 litre tank + a reserve).

Ouch.

Wonder what the petrol price is like in England? its usually even higher
over there.

The US has had a sweet deal on gas prices for decades, while the rest
of the industrialized world has had to pay much higher prices. Which is
why so many people here continue to drive gas guzzlers instead more
fuel-efficient cars. That will probably change, now that we're all
feeling the pinch, although it sounds like other countries are paying
even more.

I've always wondered what happened to the "economy car" mindset.
Personally, I never lost it.  Remember the "energy crisis" of the 70's?  We
shrank in horror when gas went up to 79 cents/gallon.

Cars got smaller.  Sales of smaller imports (which are no longer imports, so
don't go down that road!) skyrocketed.  The (then) American carmakers
followed suit, making smaller economy cars and smaller pickup trucks.
People started carpooling or taking public transport where available.  It
was the end of the world.  LOL

The last 15 years the mentality has been whose pickup truck is bigger?
Whose pickup truck has 4 doors instead of 2 and a longer bed (even though I
rarely see anyone "hauling" anything in those beds).  SUV's rule the road.
Mini-vans seat 10 people.  Yet these same vehicle owners have the nerve to
bitch about gas prices.

I'm not thrilled with the prices but it is what it is.  We're playing
catch-up.  I hear people all the time say things like "have you ever tried
to strap a baby in the back seat of a 2 door car?!"  Personally, no.  But
plenty of my friends were doing it in the late 70's and early 80's.  It was
no big deal; just something they had to do.  But there *are* 4 door cars
that are economical.  You don't have to be able to drive 10 people around.

The only reason we have an SUV is so that my husband can haul around 2
compressors, air drills, saws, saw horses, an air framing gun, an air trim
gun, his tool belt, a short ladder...what the heck else does he have in
there?  Oh, don't forget the cordless radio.  Pfffffffffflllllllll.  (Like
he really needed that item, ahem.)  But, he got the Pathfinder for work
in....2006, I think.... and he hasn't worked much in the past 5 months
because nobody's building houses.  So, we still owe about $16,000 on the
vehicle and the blue book value says it's worth about $4,000 because we
bought it used; it's a 2001 model.  I'm happy.  :-/

Some people don't have the option of buying a small economy car. We
have
to have a vehicle that's capable of pulling a stock trailer.
DH was hit from the rear driving a heavy-duty GMC crew cab truck, by
someone at 45 mph
who was also driving a truck. Ours was a total loss. I firmly believe
if DH

Some people have a reason to drive an SUV.  Most of the people I see driving
them don't. <shrugs>

My ex, Ray, was a construction superintendant and a carpenter.  He needed a
pickup truck.  He was of the mentality it had to be the biggest, baddest
truck.  He got a new one seems like every year, bigger and "better" than the
one before.  (I've lost count of how many he had during the course of our
relationship.)  Yet I rarely saw him haul anything in it.  He had a built-in
toolbox thing across the back by the cab but other than that I could see no
reason for the size of the truck(s) other than the male preoccupation with
size ;)

I'd agree with you, but we still have to be able to haul a wheel chair (not
at the moment, but I wasn't going to send the van back just because Rob got
better), have something that Rob could get into easily (harder for me, I'm
vertically challenged leg wise), and could carry more than four people.
When ever possible, we (meaning Mike) uses the Tempo, which is much smaller.
I worry about him though as the Tempo isn't as reliable as the van.

About UKP 1.15 per litre for unleaded.

So, thats UKP 5.35 / gallon.

Yes, but how much of your litre is spent in taxes?  I read somewhere that
here it is about $.40/gallon US taxes.  The state gets a chunk and local
governments try to get their bite out of the gallon too.

I'd rather laugh than whine.  At next year's RPCA meet and greet, I'll have
to pass around photos of my butt and both front and back of my right thigh.
Right at dinner time.  That way I get larger servings of the food.

Won't bother me a bit.  Gramby. Photos without my C C TV don't get viewed
very well.

Okay, you can have all my food because I can't keep much down anymore; how's
that.  :~)

I'd rather you were able to eat.  We don't want you becoming a crew member
on the Ghost Mouser too early.  Though it would be interesting to pick up
some of Dave Yehuddah's colorful language.

Remember how many different languages he spoke?  And I'll bet he knew how
to swear in several more.  I'll bet now he has several additional species
down as well as cat ear and body language.  I'm sure he used to wonder
'exactly' what they were saying to him.  Now he knows.

I am cheered and I think that isn't good... I used to be lots heavier, still
some to go but there are areas that have shown me that gravity is alive and
pulling downward, Lee

Hey, I've got three belly buttons.

At least the scar down the middle 'is' down the middle, but everything else
seems out of place.

(And this isn't even my gimp group.  You should see some of their feet.)

I don't know, am I deformed enough for your gang? Hands full of scars,
one scar going halfway around the base of my throat, and my neck and
upper back a solid plate of hardened skin. The non-functional pancreas,
veins and nerves don't show.

I think you qualify, we can't all be blessed with obvious deformities.  Rob
wants to join the group too, He says that his deformity is really tiny (nope
he didn't check out his groin) but impossible to miss.

Pam S, laughing.

when you get that money figured out I will take a money order large enough
to buy the new keyboard, Lee

We found out where part of it went.  Someone needs to hide her ATM card
better.  Rob thought he was helping when he ordered two new filters for a
couple of air cleaners we picked up at a yard sale for a song.  Turns out
the filters cost $90.  I also got a couple of catalogues yesterday, one from
a meat company and the other from Rob's favorite hard sausage company,
Hickory Farms (for some reason I keep thinking the name is Hillshire Farms)
I'm afraid to find out what, if anything, he ordered from them.

both companies exist, call and cancel the order, you are his guardian, they
I think have to cancel, Lee

You guys must have much higher prices then we do.  If you plan ahead with
and online booker you can get a hotel for the night for as little as $25 -
$30.  Not exactly enough to break the bank compared to having to cancel a
trip that would have cost hundreds.

You can't get what they used to call a "flop house" for that kind of money.

Sure you can with Travelocity or one of the other online booking services -
we got a room at the Hyatt in San Antonio (usually goes for $150/night) for
$35.  You just have to search for the best deals and plan ahead.
