Talkign to some friends last night and two nice cat stories came up

The first concerns a former flatmate called Barry. Now Barry  liked his
football but also liked getting into fights with the rival supporters i.e. a
bit of a hooligan. He looked the part as well, shaved head, scars etc. At
this time, there was a stray cat in the area that would come into their
kitchen and look out for leftovers of which there tended to be plenty and to
everyone's surprise Barry would make sure something tasty was leftover for
the cat through other than that he didn't really have much to do with the cat
who getting bold would come in and once or twice spray the kitchen.

Came the time when they all had to move, Barry comes downstairs, suitcase in
one hand, rucksack on back with other bits in and in the other hand....cat
carrier complete with cat

Barry's only comment was "Well he depends on me now- I can't leave him to
starve".Said cat, now neutered etc is a spoilt housecat these days

The other concerned  a friend called Nick. His girlfriend had a job where she
had to often work late and one night as she was walking home, a rather
handsome black and white tom came up to her for skritchies and when she
walked off, the cat followed her. When she got to her front door, she
jokingly said "Do you want to come in?" and the cat came in. So she found
something for him to eat  and then he retired to the spare bedroom and fell
asleep on the bed. He wasn't thin but he was filthy.

The next morning assuming he'd just cadged a bed for the night, she let him
out. The next evening when she was walking back there was the cat....

This went on for a few days then Nick and girlfriend decided to pop cat along
to vets and ask because they were wondering where his Hoomins and his home
were- of course, Brian (the cat) knew exactly where his Hoomins and his home
was but he wasn't telling them...yet...

Vet pronouced Brian to be healthy if somewhat in need of a bath but said he
was probably a stray and if Nick didn't want to keep him (Which they had not
planned on) then the vet would put him to sleep because he was about 8 months
old and there was an extreme surplus of stray cats and the local shelters
were full..

Of course Brian knew who his Hoomins were and where his home was because the
next thing after the vet had spoken, Nick found himself making an appointment
for neutering and shots.Brian the cat was home!

He has since been joined by Elisa

Thanks so much for the stories, Lesley.  You hear so much of the bad things
people do to cats that it's SO nice to hear about the kind people who help
them.  They're the real heroes in our world.

<snipped wonderful stories>

What heart-warming stories. And they are both very reminisent of how
cats originally came to domesticate us and begin the long, slow
process of civilizing us bare-faced primates.

Yay, Barry! I wish everyone would follow this "hooligan's" example.

Well the sad reality was no local no-kill shelters (Apart from a few
most local shelters in London are kill shelters- our local council's
policy on strays is check for a microchip, wait a few days and
then.....they only hold animals if they are chipped and can be traced
or for a few days so slaves can contact them- cats and dogs with no
chip and not claimed within a few days well....they don't even try to
find homes for them- we don't over here at least in London have stores
like PetSmart with local shelters showing animals fro adoption.  The
few no kill shelters we have are packed Celia Hammond's charity
rescued a load of cats from the new Olympic site but they take animals
owner surrendered or brought to them ) the vet was being utterly
straight far better to send young Brian over the Bridge now when he
had a few days of petting and love rather than sending him to a
shelter where he would be stuck in a cage with some other cats for a
few more days before making the trip...
I also suspect the vet had them sussed they just needed that little
push to turn them from "We like Brian (They named him- the vet worked
out the rest) but we really can't have a cat now" to " Put him to
sleep? NO WAY He's coming home with us"

Or he was willing to seem like a jerk to get two people to go from "I
don't think so" to "let's adopt."

Nick told me that when the vet said that he looked down at Brian and
swears the look Brian gave him said "I trust you" and he thought "You
trusted us enough to come into the house- how can I betray that trust
by killing you?" And without looking at his girlfriend said "We need
to make appointments for shots and neutering and all that but he's our
cat now!"

As a minor side effect his gf the decided to accept his proposal -they
haven't got round to marrying yet- which he made when they came back
from the vets because he'd done the decent thing apparently one of
Brian's nicknames is "Match maker"

Aww, thanks for the nice stories, Lesley. It's so good to read something
that gives you this warm and fuzzy feeling amidst all the sad and bad
things happening.
