I took Tony in for a dental this morning
The good news - he came out of the anesthetic just fine
The bad new - he has cancer and probably 3-8 weeks left to live. They
didn't even do the dental once they found the lesion.
I am so lost already thinking about when the time comes that I no
longer have him with me. I have cried all day since the vet called me
at work to tell me.
There is one hope. That is that this - a slim chance - might be just
an open sore. I will have antibiotics to give him for 10 days to see
if it clears up. IF it doesn't, it is definitely cancer, if it DOES,
YAHOO I have more time with him.
Knowing the power of what this group is able to accomplish with purrs
and prayers, I am asking for them for Tony with all my heart. And, if
you can spare a few to keep me from crying the whole time while I
wait, I would welcome that too.

Oh no! I hope that it isn't cancer! I had a dream last night of when
Betty had that kind of cancer, and when I got up, I thought, "No, it's
over. She's been gone for two years, and she isn't suffering
anymore."
Have they said anything about doing a biopsy to check?

The vet offered to do a biopsy, but I turned it down since I knew I
wouldn't ask an elderly gentleman such as hisself to go through
chemo. Tony will go quickly if it is cancer - in as little as a few
weeks possibly. I thought of you when I found out.

I really hope it isn't, but if it is cancer, if it is oral SCC, then I
think that treatment is more for the hoomin than for the kitty. I
don't know anyone who's had a cat that's survived it. I wanted to try
to keep Betty with me for even just a little bit longer, because I
just couldn't let her go. She forgave me for my selfishness because
she was generous and brave. Tony is a service cat, so I know that he
is a generous and brave boy too.
Here is Betty's timeline with cancer. She was actually lucky - she
lasted about nine months because the tumor was in a good location.

I am taking Tony and putting him to sleep today. With the things they
did to his throat during the surgery and his behavior since he has
been home, I see him not being able to be himself and yet trying so
hard. He isn't eating or drinking. The time has come. I am not willing
to do IV fluids on him because it is one more insult. He is 14 years
old and has been a wonderful cat. I guess that is the difference
between him and Betty. Betty was so much younger and had more fight to
give and more life to gain if the treatments had worked.
Thanks for taking your time to answer me.

I think you have done the kindest thing for Tony's sake, and I salute
you for your courage. But I'm grieving for and with you, too Bridget.
It's so hard to let a beloved animal go, and this emergency really
blindsided you with almost no time to prepare for it. I think almost
everyone here has had to do some variation of this difficult thing,
and we're with you in spirit. Tony will be sorely missed.

Our cats are all purring that this may be only an open sore. Even
though that is serious, it is quite treatable. And after he recovers
he can go back for that dental.
All may yet be very well.
