Healing purrs desperately needed

Bettina - 04 May 2008 11:19 GMT Leo - one of the four little ones who were put in a cardboard box in front of my house mid december 2007 might have a pneumonia. Since yesterday I see him breathing heavily and can`t do anything about it as he doesn`t allow me near to him. He, from the start, was the one who doesn`t come nearer as armslength. I spoke with the Vet and we discussed all possibilities - most likely Leo`s got a heavy lung inflammation. I can`t give antibiotics as his nose is so fine that he smells it in the food. Can only wait until he is so hungry he`d eat almost anything, or until he gets unconscious and I can take him to the Vet for a antibiotic shot. It is now all about hoping and praying that he fights it through by himself. It breaks my heart not to be able to do anything. If I would catch him with a net he could get so excited that his lung volume might not be sufficient. So the vet told me not to do that. So - emergency purrs are very welcome here. Leo has to work it out by himself but if you could send thoughts for his wellbeing and recovery it would be highly appreciated here.

Sometimes the chest cavity fills with fluids so that the lungs can't expand properly. Cats can be amazingly resilient though. Purrs his body can heal itself.

Purrs to your Leo from my crew! Can you get some colloidal silver and add it to his food? It has no flavour or scent, so he may not detect it. I have found it useful when treating kittens for eye problems.
Hope he gets well soon!

Particularly from Kumani who once had a mystery flu and it was the same sort of thing, they could give her antibiotics and fluids but she had to rally and fight it off herself otherwise.

You can often borrow these traps from animal shelters or animal welfare groups. As soon as Leo has been "caught," transport him to the vet *in the trap.* The vet should be able to handle it from there.
Good luck with Leo.

Rhonda - 04 May 2008 18:35 GMT Bettina, don't give up trying to get the antibiotics into him. We also had a former-feral kitten who could sniff anything in food. It was a crisis trying to get any medicine in him.
One vet told us that he has never had a cat reject the antibiotic Orbax in tuna oil (not tuna water.) We did that -- poured some oil out of the can then let the Orbax dissolve in it for 15-20 minutes. We stirred it in and he lapped it up.
Last year we found a very good compounding pharmacy for animals. They know what antibiotics they can mask the best. We had one in chicken gravy flavor and added more chicken juice from canned cat food and he also ate that.
I know the panic, but when you also know it's life-threatening it's a big incentive to try about anything!
Good luck to Leo and to you.

Bettina - 04 May 2008 22:52 GMT At the moment Leo isn't eating anything (sof ar I see), he's only taking in a bit of water. Which is a good sign. Spoke to the vet and we ended up doing long distance diagnosis - settling for maybe pneumonia. Vet stated that I shouldn`t chase him and catch him as this might lead to a lung breakdown as he would get anxoius like hell. Too dangerous to chase him down.
This morning and afternoon Leo sat at his favourite place in the barn at a sunny window - still heavily breathing (but it loked (from far) a bit easier as the night before. Then he vanished from there and didn`t come in at 8pm as usual when I settle onmy sofa to watch TV. I really felt bad and there where only two possibilities in my mind - the good one - he is over the crisis and sleeps somewhere to get his strength back. Second - the worst one - he is lieing somewhere fighting his last battle. Now it's half past 11pm and he showed up 10 minutes before. He is still heavily breathing and looks so thin. He took three sips of water and then I threw a bit liver sausage with a piece of antibiotic tablet to him, but he didn't even look at it. ( Had to rescue the piece from three other cts who were very interested). tried three times more to get him interested in this piece but he left the room and settled down in the kitchen, near the (full) food bowl. He just doesn't wants to be bothered.
So I am in a situation where I just can`t do anything but pray and see how he fights it through. Damn it.
Tomorrow I am gonna get some tuna in oil and some chicken and will try to get him interested in that. Oh well - if only he would eat that antibiotics. That would help. it is called Amoxicillin and especially for the lung area. Friend of mine said - Leo is young and has got 7 lifes. He will make it. I hope he is right.
Keep them purrs coming please.

Granby - 05 May 2008 00:18 GMT As hard as I know it must be not to chase him and force the medication on him, you are doing the right thing. A lady I work with avoided the advice of the vet and the lungs collapsed. Sometimes to do nothing is the hardest thing of all. Keep trying to get him to eat and drink. Will keep praying all goes well.

I should take the risk and bring him in that he can get some special serum called "Feliserin". Only antibiotics in the food wouldn`t do the job. As this lady is a cat specialist, the one who operated Mohrchens eye, I trust her totally. She is very experienced and knoes her job. So, I got a special cage from my other vet (who is only 5 minutes away, but is mostly for cattle and things like neutering and flu) and of course now Leo has vanished. Bettina - 05 May 2008 19:41 GMT I soft-chased Leo about 3 hours (following him, setting the cage in front of his nose, inviting him, waiting for THE good opportunity to grab him and shove him into the cage). Got him two times yet he slipped my grip. Darn. He then hid under the garden bench. So I decided toi build barricades around it only leaving the hole where the cage was. I barricaded the bench another hour and then, trying to push Leo with a tool in the direction of the cage - he overrun my barricades. Being on the run again. Then I decided I needed a cup of coffe and a break. (Being coldsweated) Leo went into the house and I didn't succeed to cage him two more times. Then I got myself a hot cup of coffee. My sister called. Doing her homework for a beginners-computer class. I should help.<sigh> So I spent half an hour explaining to her and her class-mate how to create folders and subfolders in Windows. (Holy S**t). I kept my nerves by telling me that there was a time whenI was a beginner with computers also. K, Done with that. Leo has changed his place to the living-room. Looking very exhausted. I put the cage another time in front of his nose and begged a little. Then took a blanket, ready to follow some vets advice`tothrow it over the little bugger. Astonishingly Leo didn't run when I was behind him holding the blanket high, and as I just began hoovering it over him he made one little jumo INTO THE CAGE - I couldn't grasp that for a millisecond and then believing my eyes shut the cagedoor. PUHH! Called the doc who doesn`t has the serum but is always available. (The near one who doesn`t cost a fortune). he was out on an emergency. (sigh) Called him on his mobile and asked if he would come to my house after the emergency he was working on. He said ok but it would need some time not before 8.30pm that he would be able to show up. Now - Leo is in his cage, mouncing a bit every now and then and we are waiting for the doctor who should be here in (now) short time. He will inject some antibiotics and something again the inflammation. And I am thinking of keeping Leo the whole night in that cage and drive tomorrow to see the vet lady who will give him that serum she spoke about. Will phone first if the medication today and the planned one tomorrow will go ok together. YEAY - I did it, or Leo in the end did it. Hopefully it all will work out. He's still alive which is a good sign.<g>
Will put photos of my barricaded garden bench up tomorrow.

Bettina - 05 May 2008 20:14 GMT Thank you all for your purrs and prayers. This time it was too late. Leo died 10 min ago in that cage. Two hours he was quiet in there then he startet to meow a little, after 10 min meowing I put the cage into the kitchen on the kitchen table as I was awaiting the vet every minute. Then Leo startet to really meow, after 3 minutes he began to try to leave the cage, biting the wire. Then he collapsed into the corner of that damned cage. I poked him into his fur a bit, to see if would become conscious again. He let out a little cry and slumped down. Little One has died.
There was so much love there for him. He shouldn`t have done that.

Steve Touchstone - 07 May 2008 12:23 GMT (((((((((Bettina)))))))))))))) I'm so sorry to hear this. I know from experience that nothing I write helps much right now, just remember that the girls here are sending purrs your way.

I'm so sorry to hear this (only just read this thread.) The trouble with ex-ferals is that they are very difficult to treat when they are ill, they don't understand we are trying to help. It's either hard to catch them, or they will not allow you to medicate them (like KFC) You did your best. ((hugs))

You did all you could to help him - but sometimes there is nothing we can do to help and you have to sit and watch it happen...
Our sincerest condolences on your loss from Inge and the catgang

Since [quoted text clipped - 16 lines] > > Bettina Now the other way round - spoke to specialist vet and she told me to get the cat in any case to the vet. She told me that pneumonia can last for weeks and that in the worst case lungs and phrenic could grow together which wouldn`t be a condition anyone would like to live with. I will get him sooner or later and bring him to the lady vet.
Am I nerving with my to and fros? Oh well, now keep your thumbs pressed that I can get Leo in that cage. It has to succeed! Today or tomorrow he will see a vet.
