I am looking for a dog and went on a rescue site here in Ill.  The adoption
for the two I was interested in was $300.00.  I expected around $100.00.
For that kind of money, I could buy the kind of dog I wanted and start from
scratch instead of a rescue.  Is this high or am I that far behind the
times?
Matthew - 01 May 2008 03:37 GMT
Or down here it is average price for a rescue is $55 to $200 that includes
microchipping all shots and neutering sometimes the county requires tagging
permits which run from $5-$75 dollars

we have a  program for senior animals  their price is $25 -$75  but the
prices all depends on the breed, training for any of the shelters

When we adopted Rex, his adoption fee was $150 with a $50 "senior
discount" because they thought he was 7 years old.  Other shelters were
charging $300 more or less for "young small dogs" (e.g., Chihuahua,
mini-Dobies, etc.).  Their thinking was that people want the smaller
breeds more and are willing to pay a premium.

I assume the shelter dogs are already vaccinated, neutered, heartworm
tested. $150
per dog is higher than our shelter charges, but still, I don't think
you can buy a
dog, have it vetted for $150. For instance, with our area vets, it
costs around $90
to neuter a dog. Rabies vax is $25, probably at least another $40-50
for the regular
shots. Heartworm test is $30. That's nearly $200 before you've even
laid out cash
for the dog.
Some shelters have vets who donate these services, but many don't.
After all,
you're not buying a dog at a shelter in the true sense of the word.
You're adopting
a dog, and making a donation so that they can pay the bills and stay
in business
in order to help *other animals.

Sorry, you are right Lee. It was per dog.  Lord knows I don't need two.
They were both Lab mix.  Called the Humane society in Terre Haute, It is
$65.00, depending on the dog's age most are wormed and basic shots.  When I
explained  my reason for wanting a dog the lady gave me the name of an
animal hospital.  She said often people bring animals in and don't want to
pay for their medical needs.  The adoption fee here is $100.  It was just a
shock when I saw that $300.00 fee, donation of whatever you call it.

Sorry for misunderstanding! $300 *is* the priciest adoptionf ee I've
ever heard of. Was it a breed-specific rescue?

No, I did a google search for dog rescue in Illinois.  Rumpled through some
posts until I found a dog that looked like it needed a home.  Those darn
labs can give the "take me home looks like no others".

Our local shelter only charges $75 for cats/kittens or dogs/puppies
under 5 years of age.  $50 for over 5 years of age.  All animals are
spayed/neutered, tested for the normal nasties (hearworm for dogs,
FIV/FELV in cats) and up to date on all shots appropriate for their
age... not to mention de-wormed and de-flead (and de-ticked if necessary).

They also list all the average cost of the above services of local vets
if you were to "buy" a similar animal at a pet store.... so what you pay
for the pet PLUS vet costs is much more than the $50-75 you would pay
the shelter.

Then there is Adopt-A-Dog month, where you get a twofor...  and
Adopt-A-Cat month.... Adopt-A-Senior-Pet month.....  Sometimes they get
animals that people can no longer keep, they have lived together all
their lives, so they try to keep them together, and offer a twofor for
the pair.

Some dogs are also partially trained - they have volunteers work with them!

Molly was  $65 three years ago.  For a grown 'ordinary' feral cat.  She'd
been spayed and tested and had her shots.  I figure they have to pay their
expenses somehow.

While we were looking for just the right cat though, and this was the day
before Halloween, several of the shelters made it clear we could have all
the cats we wanted, even the black ones, with no fee and no waiting period.

Charlie is just one of those kind of 'cat people'.

That sounds mighty high to me... were you looking for purebreds? I
know they charge a lot more for 'recognisable' breeds than for your
general mutt, and also more for cute puppies than for older dogs... I
love bichons and it would probably cost $200 to adopt one even from a
shelter.
Granby - 03 May 2008 01:09 GMT
No, both of these were lab something mixes.  Today I looked at some
min-pin/Basset mixes.  Too small and one was so funny.  He looked for all
like a pincher but had long ears like a Baskit hound.  Here again too small,
if I stepped on it I would hurt it.  They are not willing to get out of the
way until they have been with you for while and learn you don't see them.
