Hunter on a Leash

He's not thrilled to have the harness put on him, but he'll tolerate it (he
"bites" me when I put it on or take it off, but not that hard - at least not
until last night when he definitely made his point (pun intended)) - but
that wasn't serious, more just a scratch.

So every evening I put his harness on and tie a long leash to the coffee
table and hook him up.  He really, really likes being out and about with
everyone, so he's happy.  And I'm still able to keep him "quarantined" since
none of the other cats get too close to him, yet they do get to see and
smell him and him them.  Everybody gets treats, skritching, and playing
with* so that they'll, hopefully, start associating good things with each
others' appearance.  There's still a small bit of hissing going on (mostly
Demi and Jessie whenever they look over at him, but Archer will also hiss
occasionally since he doesn't like it when Hunter tries to play with his
tail).  But Hunter doesn't do any hissing at all - he just purrs really
loudly at everyone.

The harness and leash keep him from indulging his instinctual chase response
when any of the other cats run around him, so there aren't any bad
confrontations.  This is very important for Sammy - when he's on the leash
she can observe him "safely" from a distance and I'm hoping she'll get used
to him enough so that she won't panic when he's no longer leashed.

*I'm beginning to think that Hunter may have been hurt or abused in the past
because of his reaction to "stick" toys.  When I try to play with the furry
string on a stick (which has feathers on the end of the string) Hunter will
panic and try to run away.  It sickens me to think that anyone could have
deliberately hurt him in the past, but given the condition he was in when he
found us it wouldn't surprise me.

Anyway, any spare "good integration" purrs you have would be much
appreciated.

He sounds like such a sweetie, I just know he will fit in wonderfully.  I'm
purring you can just take all the time he will need.

We will take as much time as he/they need.  By putting the door at the end
of the hall we've given him lots of room to roam around in so I don't feel
so guilty as I would if he were confined to one small bedroom.

Purrs for the whole furred-"family" to get along well.

Thanks Sam.  I have great hopes that this will go well.  Sammy isn't trying
to run from Hunter any more, she'll sit in the great room and stare at him
and when he gets near her she just reaches out her nose to smell.  It may be
different when he's not on a leash, but I don't think she'll panic as badly
because she's getting used to seeing and smelling him now while it's safe.

I'm glad to hear Hunter is doing so well. It seems like he really,
really *wants* the other cats to like him.

In time, I'm sure that most of them will. The rest will tolerate him,
I'm sure. He sounds so laid back in what would seem to be a stressful
situation.

It's very sad to hear that Hunter is afraid of sticks. There is no level
below which some humans will not sink.

I hope with lots of TLC he forgets about his earlier trauma.

Purrs are on the way for Hunter to continue to do well in his new home.

He really is so laid back.  The first day we brought him in the house was
the day we brought him to the vet for his pre-op and shots.  He was in a
totally strange situation with (mostly) strange people doing scary and
painful things to him and he still sat on the vet's table and purred!!!

He really is a sweetie!  How anyone could have hurt him is beyond
imagination, and you can be sure he'll get enough TLC for the rest of his
live to make up for it a thousand times over.
